I would say that the dozens of high level video consultants, technicians, engineers and gurus within the industry should be greater in influence (weighted consensus) than the sensibilities of one voice. Especially an 81 year old who has a vested interest in his previous works being upheld to the detriment of the content' commercial viability.

We have the results we should. And who can deny from Ghostbusters, to BotRK, to The Patriot, to Close Encounters, to Die Hard; their pathway is delivering on the intent of the past filmmaking? While having the bonus of expectations met on the modern spec of consumers products.

Thought I would dredge this up due to my experience last night. My wife and I have been taking the rare break from watching movies in my theater and instead watching some shows in our family room on the OLED. This week we watched The Mrs. Maezal show on Amazon via my ATV4K. I looked around and couldn't find a UHD version on the app so watched the whole first season not in UHD/HDR until I found it buried in another section of the app and we watched the final episode in 4K HDR. I thought the show looked fantastic throughout the week despite the lack of these features (gotta love infinite dynamic range). When I watched the last show in HDR, I was a bit too distracted with the HDR. It was like every light in the show (car headlights, street lights, Christmas lights, etc) was turned up to 20 while the rest looked natural. I didn't hate it, but it did take me out of it a bit now and then. Didn't notice much difference in resolution overall, but we sit farther back than ideal for judging that in our family room.

Your reaction is not uncommon to folks who wouldn't normally watch HDR on a direct-view display. Give it time...

I didn't like The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, so I only watched a single episode, but the HDR looked good to me. Overall, I like Amazon's approach to HDR on their original shows. Bosch (which is by far their best original show) has some very nice HDR in seasons 2-4. The Tick, The Grand Tour, Grand Prix Driver, all look very nice. Then there are shows like Sneaky Pete (their second best original) and Man in the High Castle, which look way too consistent from one episode to the other. The color grading is drastically different for some episodes even within the same season, which is very weird.

Prime really needs to make it easier to find their UHD content. It’s dumb that they make it a separate listing in the first place.

We don't have that problem in Canada. Over here, all content that is in UHD shows up automatically without having to specifically search for it. No separate listings.

I haven’t found a good way to search for it here! I just have to dig through all the categories and hope it comes up.

I watched the first ep of Jack Ryan and it was 4k with HDR, and all I did was click on it on the main menu.

For those in the cheap seats, or not getting the analogy. He says "adapt or die". Billy Bean isn't advocating for baseball to have it's rules entirely shit on (like adding Brad Pitt would do to a film 50+ years ago...). He just advocates the "rules" (read:conventions) these dinosaurs espouse as gospel not be stupidly adhered to to stop progress.

BTW I was coming in here to post this analogy sight unseen, and you had tee'd it up nicely by mentioning Senor Pitt revisionism. So cheers!
