no problem for a re-do of your personal library, as one can easily adjust the HDR-ishness with a new tool….https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uHzK...youtu.be&t=44s
Additionally, mike, entering from thee other end, the upcoming release of Premiere Pro will include an Export filter called “SDR Conform”, which enables your originally HDR-graded material to deliver an SDR copy without manually re-grading the footage if you don't have access to a high end color correction system. |

![]() It’s difficult for me to find time to venture out of this section of the forum…if I had more time I’d have been in the Prem thread several days ago alerting Arsenal supporters to be wary of poking a bear (ein Bär). |

Went to Spectre last night. Saw it on a pretty massive 2.1:1 screen projecting from a Barco 4K projector. Overall the image quality was pretty good but I can see some not liking the rather subdued color palette and lean toward yellow in a lot of imagery. Not nearly as exciting visually as Skyfall. Overall I would give the movie a B, good but nothing to write home about. Meanders a lot and felt a bit unfocused in tone.
I realize this was shot in both 35mm and with the new Arri 65. It was VERY easy to tell when one camera was used or the other. The Arri really does an amazing job of looking like a 70mm captured film. So much more depth and detail, but I was honestly surprised how much different the images looked. I would have expected them to use the 65 in longer shots and blend the footage a bit more. |

Nobody else seen Spectre yet?
![]() Ooookay then, let’s perhaps go back and revisit some other worthy post from yesterday or several days ago to offer further elaboration in order to keep the thread warm. |

To convert from ST2084 to ACES involves several transforms, so essentially it’s an indirect connection. But the advantage (with ACES) is that you have more of a display independence, in other words, your (the studio’s) ACES master is not bound to any of the output systems or devices. You have all the dynamic range you could desire in ACES and you may actually end up going down in dynamic range with viewing the content on your HDR tv as compared to that of what ACES is capable of. Each thing (ACES and HDR) is different and has its own advantages. So, the thinking (esp. amongst color scientists and developers, not marketing folk) is that in the future, HDR and ACES might become complementary, working in tandem if you will. A cutting edge goal/concept being thrown around in peoples’ minds is that it would be beneficial if you could use the HDR workflow as a way to edit ACES (which is not exactly how the current ACES model works). So, in other words, edit the ACES content in HDR space and then covert it back to ACES (losslessly)….but that’s bits-dependent and a topic for yet another day as the bell tolls at 10:00 A.M. |

My reactions below: [Show spoiler] Do NOT see a movie in 2K IMAX. Mine was sadly a former 15/70 screen. I don't know if they even have their film projector anymore. That was basically like watching a big LCD TV. No fine details even in closeups, colors were muted, and black levels were poor. To be honest, save for some dark scenes I couldn't even see film grain. No way to tell it was ever shot on film for most of it, even during snow sequences. It looked like a 1080p YouTube video during closeups. Quite disappointing. Unfortunately it seems I am somewhat lost around here when it comes to finding a decent place to watch movies when they come out. Sometimes the art house theaters that I frequent for 35mm and 70mm movies show modern films. It's a 30 mile drive, but at least the picture will be bright and detailed (for 2K digital at least) and I'm giving my money to a place that deserves it. It is just frustrating when there are three major theater chains nearby (Paragon, AMC, and Regal) that all have 4K projectors but have shown 2D films with the 3D lens in place so many times that I stopped going there. Writing corporate HQ and complaining to the managers made no difference. |

I saw it on a regular screen in 2K and looks like I had a similar experience. Pixels clearly visible on subtitles and other text. Whites and flesh tones very yellow just like the TV trailers. Last edited by AVfile; 11-08-2015 at 10:10 PM. |

What wasn't so hot was the sound mixing. Certain moments of dialogue were uncomfortably and unnaturally low, whereas the very next scene it'd be painfully loud. Kudos to the projectionist for finding a volume setting that seemed to try and find as best a middle ground as could be found. A friend of mine in Chicago reported that same issue at Navy Pier, except the volume was set seemingly lower and some of the dialogue was literally inaudible. |
