The No Fun League strikes again:

Seriously? EVERY receiver is essentially defenseless. Stop handcuffing defensive players or this game is gonna get weak REALLY fast.

It is a rediculous suspension but that is the way the NFL has been going. Kind of ironic that it happened to a player that has been criticized for not tackling as hard to avoid hurting himself more.

He was going for the chest and the offensive guy lowered his head at the last moment.

There is no solution for that if you are going to continually blame the defense for it.

And the problem with this type of suspension is that it's not a teaching experience, because there's not a damn thing a defender can learn from it.

Like Terjyn stated above, this is not the defenders fault. Offensive players are TAUGHT to lower their head to protect themselves. There is literally nothing Ed Reed could have done there sans falling low and going for the knees.

They also said this going for repeat offenders as they put it.

With the more injuries every week, more and more safety things are gonna be brought up.

Fine then penalize the receiver for dropping his head into the defender but not he defender who already went low to his chest. Fining and Suspending Reed for that hit is utter bullshit and the NFL had better not uphold it on appeal because there was no malice to the hit it was clean until the receiver dropped his body.

well... they already have cameras suspended above the field with wires, soon enough they'll just drop the wires down and attach them to the helmets of the offense so everyone stays upright, and wires will be attached to the defense so they cannot raise their head beyond shoulder pad level - problem solved!!!

seriously, it's football and what have we all heard a million times.... "things happen in the blink of an eye" or whatever language you want to use.

there's no way to completely protect everyone from it, and if the NFL thinks fines and suspensions are going to solve the problem, they must be concussed themselves. why and how could it stop? you really think people are going to remember while running as fast as they can to stop a breakaway touchdown (with, let's say the game on the line) to make sure to avoid helmet contact and high tackles? sure. that's why no one runs stop lights / stop signs and other simple crimes because everyone remembers, "oh shoot! not a 100 dollar ticket!" and they slow down and stop.

no amount of money or time away will fix the problem, at least not now. maybe in 25 years if they start penalizing / suspending at the elementary age so it becomes ingrained in them, but not for players who are NFL veterans or even rookies who have learned one way how to play.

can't teach an old dog new tricks - especially when the dogs are running full speed, you can't predict what the other one will do, you're just doing your job, and you're doing what you've been trained to do for 10+ years.

Ted Cottrell reduced Ed Reed's one-game suspension to only a $50,000 fine. Wow...

Maybe not on this one (still haven't seen it), but he has a history of aiming for guys heads. He's gone high his entire career.

I would, in fact, have more respect for the NFL if they started suspending/fining players on offense who drop their head at the last minute.

I do not understand why Spearing is legal offense-on-defense but not vice versa.

Dropping your head is a lot different than these defensive guys pushing off like missiles.

When an offensive player has a full head of steam and right before meeting the defender lowers his head, no...it is NOT different. Not at all.

Yet when it happens the defender gets penalized and fined, and the offensive guy nothing.
