[Show spoiler]JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The team confirms Monday morning what was widely expected, Jaguars owner "parts ways" with Jaguars General Manager Gene Smith.

A statement the Jaguars released at 8 a.m. Monday says owner Shahid Khan will immediately begin his search for the new general manager of the Jaguars, but adds he will not comment on the process until the new general manager is introduced.

“I met with Gene Smith this morning to inform him of my decision to go in a new direction and thank him for his dedication to the Jaguars since the inception of the franchise,” Khan said in Monday morning's statement."


NFL Network's Mike Lombardi said Sunday that former owner Wayne Weaver urged Khan to retain Smith, but the new owner wanted to hand-pick his own general manager.

"Gene is a good man with a long career ahead of him in football, and I know this season was as difficult for him as anyone with our organization," Khan said.

The Jaguars will honor the remaining two years on Smith’s contract.

ESPN, the NFL Network and other media outlets were reporting Sunday that the Jaguars would fire Smith, and are even speculating on who will replace him.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that Cardinals director of player personnel Jason Licht and 49ers director of player personnel Tom Gamble are the top candidates to replace Smith.

“Now it is time for the Jacksonville Jaguars to begin a new chapter," Khan said. "We’re not looking back. I’ve made it clear from Day One that we pledge nothing less than to deliver the first Super Bowl championship to Jacksonville. Our fans have been remarkably loyal over the years, and they were truly outstanding this past season. We simply must do better for our fans."

The decision to change general managers leaves the fate of first-year head coach Mike Mularkey uncertain. One of the first decisions of new general manager would likely be whether to stay with Mularkey or make a different choice.

Smith has been with team since Jacksonville was awarded the franchise in 1994. He was named general manager in 2009, running all football operations for the team.

Mularkey has a regularly scheduled press conference at 10:30 a.m. Monday.

Time for a change at the front office. Been long overdue.

Today is Black Monday, one of my favorite days of the years when coaches and general managers get fired. As previously mentioned Jacksonville has already fired GM Gene Smith, but that is just the start. There should be at least 4 coaches fired today with Norv Turner, Andy Reid, Romeo Crennel, and Pat Shurmur certain to be gone.

Edit: The Browns have fired Shurmur and GM Tom Heckert.

Another year and another loss for the Cowboys. How much more will it take for Jerry Jones to wake the hell up and get a top named coach in there and turn this thing around? Also I aint one of those people who will pin the loss last night all on Tony Romo. Yea he threw 3 picks but look at what he was working with.....a banged up Dez Bryant, a banged up Miles Austin, an atrocious offensive line and a running game thats been inconsistant. What more can the guy do? On top of that the Cowboys defense was seriously banged up and couldnt stop the Redskins running game. Horrible coaching this year didnt help either. Its a mess in big D and time for some changes but the question is is will Jones do anything about it? Nope! So more misery is ahead but the Boys will always be my team in the NFC so I will go down with the sinking ship I guess. That being said......

Great game for AP and the Vikes....no go up to Greenbay and knock them out! Its gonna be an AFC Championship game between Denver and New England you wait and see and when it happens Peytons storybook season comes to a crashing end!

Yup, there should be an official announcement for Reid today.

I'd be damned if Norv Turner keeps his job. He's been on the hot seat longer than anyone year after year from what I can remember.

Sadly the Jags owner wants Tebow so whoever you get is going to be a supporter for Tebow. Honestly if I were you guys id expect MJD to play out the last year of his contract and bolt for a better team. If the Jags do go after Tebow which is expected, you guys can expect 5 more years of mediocrity to fix the issue at hand.
