It's happening for real on the Cowboys forums, weirdos over-analyzing every single play as if it were a big deal. Truth is, as far as I can tell, for the most part it's how hard the players work in practice and in the weight room and how much the coaches and other players like them that matter, the pre-season games aren't that big of a factor for most players. Outright terrible performances certainly don't help though.

Cant really take much from pre-season, remember the Lions, 4-0 pre-season, 0-16 reg season

Teams don't game plan, make in-game adjustments(for the most part) and the people who are actually good enough to make major contributions on an NFL team don't play much except during the week 3 dress rehearsal game. Think they need to go to 2 already, have 1 game for bubble people and another for the starters, too many significant players going down every year in games that don't count.

Preseason is where you can really learn the ins and outs of your roster. It's where your depth is determined.
