Seahawks released WR Sidney Rice.

Rice, 27, signed a five-year, $41 million contract with Seattle in July of 2011 and missed 15 of a possible 48 regular season games with various injuries. His 2013 campaign ended in late October due to a torn ACL. Prior to that, he dealt with concussions. It was a no-brainer move for the Seahawks to cut ties with Rice and save $7.3 million versus the cap, as they need money to re-sign far more important players. Rice is said to be "way ahead" of schedule in his rehab but will almost certainly have to settle for a one-year deal in an effort to prove he's healthy. Rice's body is breaking down. He caught just 97 passes in three seasons with Seattle

This would have been an absolute shocker:

Per multiple league sources, the Cleveland Browns nearly pulled off a trade with the 49ers for the rights to coach Jim Harbaugh.

A deal that would have sent multiple draft picks to San Francisco was in place between the teams. But Harbaugh ultimately decided not to leave the 49ers.

I don't know why Harbaugh would have even considered going to Cleveland. In San Francisco he's got a roster that is among the best in the league and a Super Bowl contender, whereas in Cleveland they are nowhere near contending. The Browns are an absolute mess of an organization as well, with an owner that may get indicted for fraud and an ever changing front office. Money is really the only reason I could see Harbaugh considering Cleveland. In San Francisco he's making $5 million per year and the team still hasn't given him a new contract since his initial hire, and Cleveland would likely have no problem doubling his current deal.

2. He's a wife beater. They already kept a murderer around, and it gives your team a bad image. This is an opportunity to make a statement for them.

There is no point in committing a ton of money to a RB. As a Titans fan, I know this all too well. We hear the saying all the time that "running backs are a dime a dozen" and it's true. They are. Build the rest of the team and plug in a young RB for 4-6 seasons. Then get a new one.

I agree with almost everything you just said, but I just don't see the Ravens cutting ties with Rice. They aren't exactly smart with managing their salary cap.

Some draft prospects don't take part in drills at the NFL Combine due to injuries, but Adam Muema was healthy. His reason for departing from Indianapolis early was unique.

Muema, a running back who played at San Diego State, left the combine without participating in any running back drills because he said that God told him to. And apparently, if Muema followed God's wishes, he'd be taken by the Seattle Seahawks.

From U-T San Diego:

"Can't go wrong with God," Muema said.

Muema, 21, said his immediate plans are undecided.

"(God) told me to sit down, be quiet, and enjoy the peace," he said.

Muema said he communicates with God through numbers.
Muema, who was originally projected as a late-round pick, can still show off his talent at San Diego State's Pro Day next month, if God allows him to. If not, check back in May to see if the Seahawks draft or sign Muema.

A source tells Profootballtalk the 2014 salary cap could be a "few million" higher than $132 million.
The cap could reportedly spike as high as $135 million, which would be a 9.75 percent increase on 2013. That would be extremely good news for a crowded free agent market, and means we could see fewer cap casualties than in recent years. The 2013 market was extremely soft, so soft that there were whispers of collusion. It appears we're going to be in for a much more active 2014.

On the week that Missouri's Michael Sam is trying his best to tone down the talk of his sexuality and increase that of his football skill, a lobbyist is trying to prevent Sam and other gay athletes from getting the chance to reach their dreams.

Washington, D.C. lobbyist Jack Burkman said on Monday he is preparing legislation that would ban gay athletes from joining the NFL, according to a story in TheHill.com. Burkman, who got the idea for the bill when Sam announced he was gay two weeks ago, claimed in a statement he had political support for the bill but neglected to mention from which specific lawmakers.

”We are losing our decency as a nation,” Burkman said in a statement. "Imagine your son being forced to shower with a gay man. That’s a horrifying prospect for every mom in the country. What in the world has this nation come to?”

Sam faced the media on Saturday at the NFL scouting combine and handled himself extremely well. One of Sam's lasting quotes was how he hoped to shift the discussion away from his sexual orientation to that of how he's preparing to become an NFL draft pick.

"Well, heck yeah, I wish you guys [the media] would just say, 'Michael Sam, how's football going? How's training going?'" he said. "I would love for you to ask me that question. But it is what it is. And I just wish you guys would just see me as Michael Sam the football player instead of Michael Sam the gay football player."

Burkman is trying to prevent any gay football players from earning their keep in the NFL. The president and founder of his own lobbying firm, Burkman Associates, Burkman urged in his statement for Congress — despite dozens of members having supported Sam after he came out — to throw its support behind the bill.

“If the NFL has no morals and no values, then Congress must find values for it,” Burkman said.

Sam, who worked out on the Lucas Oil Stadium field for coaches and scouts on Monday, turned in a fairly disappointing performance at the combine. He projects to be a mid-to-late-round prospect as a pass rusher.
