Actually yeah I just saw some of Ghostbusters on my 4K tv upstairs, hated the way it looks. I think projection tames it, looks glorious in the theater room.

My understanding is that these complaints date back to the first disc that only had HDR10, and that the subsequent DV version handles the grain much more effectively.

Good luck finding that version, though. Every time they do a reprint, it's the older HDR10 disc.

The Mi4K Blu-ray would be the alternative for the grain complainer.

I was looking for that disc recently but kind of gave up.

The Japanese trilogy set with the DV version is available and not even that expensive (shipping fee included), but I'm in Europe.

Apparently it's not the same disc as that of the US set though, it only has the Atmos track and the Japanese dub so not worth it IMO, unless the specs are wrong. Would be great if someone who owns the Japanese set could confirm.

Happy with the upscaled Blu rays until the DV discs hit a wide release

Although still very healthy levels on that release; not like it's been scrubbed. That's my go-to release for this classic flick... and I'm a confirmed grain LOVER.

I own the original UHD BD, but other than checking out a few scenes several years ago, I've not watched it! I like the tighter compression (based on screen cap comparisons) on the DV disc. However, I decided to just live with this one and actually watch it from beginning to end. I need to get the second movie too.

Question, why is Ghostbusters more grainy looking than other 80s movie like ET and Back to the Future?

Except that BTTF was shot on 5294, same stock as Ghostbusters (and Aliens!!), and with a smaller negative area too (1.85 vs anamorphic). So by rights it should be grainy as balls, grainier than Ghostbusters even, but it's never had that look or reputation. Dean Cundey doing Dean Cundey things, though yes most of the recent-ish transfers have been DNR'ed to varying degrees anyway.

They used too high of brightness in a lot of their early titles but the grain is still supposed to be there. It being brighter just maybe makes it more obvious.
