While I appreciate the tech specs it didn't really answer the question What say you Geoff, is it really worth the extra dough even though I don't have a DV screen? From what I've gathered there's no easy import solution either.

Yeah, but you must know by now that I must correct the incorrect. I think the improved compression is worth it on the GB's BUT the old discs weren't terribad in that respect either. With the greatest of respect you don't strike me as someone who notices an awful lot of this stuff we're babbling about so no, I wouldn't chase down the redone discs if I were you.

While it is true I'm more forgiving of bad discs I still strive for the best, within reason of course. I more than likely will buy them anyways because I love these movies, but I figured I'd get an opinion here first. Afterall, I could just buy the old discs and then sell them later.

12 bit per pixel color depth only applies to FEL (extension video and dynamic grading metadata) Dolby Vision on disc. Sony discs are normally MEL (metadata only) Dolby Vision, so only 10 bit.

Apart from Sony, Warners, small players like that.

Give me an example. Most HDR10 layers on UHDs are around 1000 nits

1000 is very common yes but there are still some oddly wild ones like Fury Road

I think Inferno might be another, but Geoff might have better examples

The movie that this very thread is about. The MaxCLL of 9000-odd nits may be exaggerating but it has regular peaks well over 1000 nits, as do most Sony Light Cannon™️ titles. Bad Boys II has regular dips over 4000 nits and even goes as high as 8000 nits. Starship Troopers and Strangelove both peak over 2000 nits. Several of the Harry Potter movies have peaks well over 2000 nits, there's a moment in Chamber of Secrets that hits 7500 nits!

So, yeah. Don't believe everything that bullet points pulled from some random webshite will tell you (hell, even Dobly's own site maintains the myth that 'standard HDR' can't do more than 1000 nits. And not to whatabout the issue, but I'd love to see some examples of the DV version of a movie hitting 10000 nits while the HDR10 is capped to 4000. Won't get many because there is no such nit limit on HDR10 as a technology, they both use the same EOTF and the same grading software and monitoring hardware, DV is just metadata added after it's been graded at source.

Fury Road hits 10 000 nits quite regularly.

Ewps, I think the original BvS and Pacific Rim are also incredibly bright, don't think they quite hit 10k, but easily pass 1000. Also Black Hawk Down, that may be the king of Light Cannon grades.

Indeed. As I said, it's mainly Warners and Sony who practice Light Cannonry.

BHD is one of my favorite discs on the format. Just stunning

You mentioning BvS reminded me that Dawn of the Dead (2004) is another hot one. Snyder likes his HDR to be zesty

I don't think it's Snyder, just how WB were encoding (if that's the correct term) them at the time. Snyder famously "rejected" the first release of BvS and asked WB for a re-do.
To this day it's the only 4K title they've remastered.
