Well, given how the look of a movie usually changes quite noticeably from one SDR transfer to another (ESPECIALLY when the filmmakers are involved ) then I'm happy to chalk up HDR as being just another revision, you know? I use the words "moving target" quite a bit during these kinds of discussions.

But it's still pleasing that these older titles finished on film aren't being given drastic re-imaginings for HDR, for the most part it's like watching your own personal film print because it feels so rich and textured.

I have a love / hate relationship with this in 4K UHD. It looks stunning in certain shots and scenes, and then (the HDR especially) a bit too bright and contrasty in others. BUT, the HDR colour might be closest to projected film print - is this possible? So for that, it is forgiven, but I'm just not used to it...

It is a little too bright and contrasty at times, but so was the Blu. Still a pretty amazing presentation though.

I've sat through it a couple of times and have the same general impression. It looks great -- at times -- but if I go and put on the Mastered in 4K Blu right afterwards, there are sections that look less contrasty -- and better balanced -- on there instead. A mixed bag but pretty good overall...and at least it's not Goodfellas!

At least both are Native 4K!
Why not compare it to GHOSTBUSTERS II too?

I thought it looked overcooked when watching in converted SDR because it simply couldn't convey the range properly, but having sampled a few scenes in proper HDR it looks much betterer.

I still need to buy both movies on UHD. Dunno why Sony doesn't have a UHD set of both of them, they did for BD.

Why do you keep talking of 2K upscales like they're the plague?

He's in the 'no 4K DI, no sale camp'. It's his money, so he can do what he wants with it. I do find it funny though how he just recently mentioned in another thread that he doesn't feel the need to bring his preference for 4K up all the time.

Yet here we are.

Sweet llama of the Bahamas, this looks stunning. After some people started ranting about grain in one of the various UHD complaint threads at AV Forums in the UK (we Britishers truly are a nation of technophobes) I thought I'd watch it again, especially given my recent update to a shiny new ZD9. It's not perfect but holy hell, it's so beautifully filmic it's unreal. The grain does occasionally look a bit frozen in certain parts of the screen where no action is happening but the bitrate is still huge, regularly pootling along at 50 or 60 Mb/s with spikes well above that, and the overall effect is still convincingly film-like.

I popped in the more recent Mi4K BD (the one that's in the UHD pack) to compare and **** me sideways it looked so soft (despite me saying just today in another thread that I rarely call BD's "soft" ) I thought I'd turned down the sharpness on my SDR settings when watching something else and had forgotten to set it back to normal. But nope, it was fine. The grain itself is reduced to such a fine patina on the BD it almost seems invisible at times compared to the UHD which is truly awash with the stuff.

As I've always said right from the first converted SDR viewing, there just isn't a massive amount of dynamic range there to play with, but what it does do is give a lovely boost to things like the proton beams and the traps, it made them look more realistic and not as cartoony as on the BD. And, as with some other BD to UHD comparisons I could mention, the colour looks much gaudier on the BD, seeming more saturated but less varied with it.

Fabulous, fabulous upgrade for anyone who loves the look of film. Grainophobes need not apply.

Alright damnit, I'm in. From now on I'm buying the 4k editions. I won't be able to get the tv till next year though. Son of a b!tch.

At least with Ghostbusters I already have the 4k. My own nerdiness had to have that new artwork.

Thanks for the review, Geoff. I look forward to the day when I can see this in proper 4K HDR. I loves my films and I loves the grainz.

Glad you came around on this one. It sold the format to me, even on my old set. Stunning looking film-like presentation.

Nah. You would have to buy the regular steelbook and put the 4K version inside. Sony did the same thing with Inferno.
