No one is (or should be) saying it's as good as the original, but that's a tough metric for almost any sequel. If you take expectations and demands out of it then I think GB2 is a super fun blockbuster from the time period. Maybe loving it as a kid is part of that, but then I could say that about hundreds of movies.

Ultimately, it’s not a necessary sequel though. You’re right about one thing, nostalgia is a very powerful thing, and I personally think it’s not a good thing to judge movies with.

I like GB2. Not enough to upgrade it to UHD, but enough to hang onto the Blu-ray. It’s not an all- time classic like the original, but it’s still decent enough in its own right to be entertaining.

Ghostbusters 2015 sounds like it's all the apocalyptic things Venkman and Spengler are describing in jail.

How many sequels are "necessary?" That seems like a silly metric. Even Terminator 2 wasn't "necessary." Also I'm saying nostalgia might add a certain bit of flavor to it, but I still think it's a solid fun 80's-ish blockbuster movie. I've never understood the hate some have for GB2.

Same for me. I was kinda "meh" seeing it as a young adult but over time I've grown to love it almost as much as the first film. It's just fun, and extremely funny. It's one of those comedies that get better with every viewing. The courtroom scene alone has more laughs than a lot of so-called comedies these days.

Louis: "Your Honor, ladies and gentleman of the audience, I don't think it's fair to call my clients frauds. Sure, the blackout was a big problem for everybody. I was trapped in an elevator for two hours and I had to make the whole time. But I don't blame them. Because one time, I turned into a dog and they helped me. Thank you."
Egon: "Very good, Louis. Short, but pointless."

Both Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters 2 are awesome movies. GB 2 terrified me at the cinema as a kid lol.

That's what I meant with GB having a certain "edge" to it.

"It's true, this man has no d..."

"Are you, Alice, menstruating right now?"

Dana's behaviour after she is "possessed" while still in human form, the overall characteristics of the Ghostbusters (especially Venkman), the innuendo, the "light" horror tone in some scenes.

These are just some of the things that come to mind. What I am trying to get across is, to me Ghostbusters has certain elements to it that are not exactly meant for children, yet at the same time it doesn't go into "adults only" territory either. It's perfectly balanced as far as I'm concerned and that's what I love about it.

That library scene at the beginning for example. It scared me as a kid, even as the Ghostbusters go down stairs before the ghost actually pops up. But is done in a fun way, never too scary and never too much. And that goes for the entire movie I think.

Now I don't think GB2 is an unnecessary sequel, I think it's just a wasted opportunity. IMO it plays it too safe, it doesn't have what made the first one so great, it's too squeaky clean if you will. To me it feels too many comprimises have been made to the overall tone. It doesn't have the spirit ( ) of the first movie. And on top of that I think the story isn't that good, it drags at times, it's not as funny as the first one and the finale with Lady Liberty is just plain bad.

All this talk about Ghostbusters makes me want to watch it again, so I think I'll pop in at least the original this weekend.

Yep. I mean, I loved the movie as a kid (saw it in the cinema, it was a proper 'event' for 9yo Geoffy who was Ghostbusters mad) but in recent years I've been a bit self-consciously "too cool for school" and argued against it for being a tired retread, for having Murray on autopilot, for being a lot more kiddie-friendly e.g. much less of a sexual aspect to it, no smoking. But now I've come back around to loving it, and not just for sheer nostalgia reasons but because it's still funny, first and foremost. I say this as someone who actually likes GB2016 (prefer the theatrical cut though), but even Murray et al on autopilot are still funnier than most modern comedians on full tilt.

I did sort of! I bought the three film collection on 4k from Amazon for £31.94. That was in December 2017. They all worked out at a tenner each, but obviously that included the 2016 one. Does that count?!

The week the first two hit UHD I ended up price matching at Best Buy after people were posting reminders in one of these threads that you can do that.

I only ended up paying eight bucks for the UHD of GB2, the first time I’d ever purchased it on any format. The first movie, which I’d already bought twice (the ‘05 dvd I’d long since sold off, and the ‘09 bd), was a different story. IIRC that one was between $22 and $24 after the price matching, but it was worth it since, well, it’s Ghostbusters, and it still got me the newer transfer on regular bd for my no-4k-gear-owning self to enjoy.
