Or go even way back to Gone with the Wind, you didn't have home video, so the only way to see something was on the big screen and then it was gone forever. Until TV was invented and you could maybe catch it on that once a year or something.

I agree with what you are saying, but I'd still like to know actual tickets sold vs. money made. It doesn't matter to me why more people saw one movie over another.

That's what happens when people have other stuff to occupy themselves with. Note that Force Awakens is just on the outside at #11 though, it took almost a billion dollars domestic and that is insane for the modern era. We go on a lot about Titanics and Avadahs for those gigantic global grosses but what Force Awakens did there - and on its first run, without the myriad re-releases that bolster the others - is very much the equivalent of those old movies that everyone and their dog went to see.

Yes, no doubt it is available. But I'm not going to know how reliable it is without looking at the methodology. There's more than one way to adjust for inflation.
