How much will you want for that 3D disc?

Oh wait. Unless, of course, there's a region issue...

I literally got paid to own some movies like Exodus and X-Men DoFP after selling the 3D disc and digital code. I should buy 3D versions all the time.

Reminds me of Force Awakens. Bought the 3D edition for £13. Sold 3D disc on its own for £13. Job done.

Do we know if the HFR is going to be the only 4K option, or if you can choose either 60 or 24? I'm really looking forward to picking this up but I don't really want to watch it in HFR.

I'm no expert but I would guess if you change the 24p support menu option on your player from "auto" to "on" it might force 24 frames? That would almost surely look super weird though, like it does on DVDs. I would guess the BD is your best bet.

I not clearly understand. Not sure.

Check on show calculated

- 2160/60p 4:2:0 10bit 11.14Gbps

- 2160/60p 4:4:4 8bit 17.82Gbps

It appears to be 60fps only.

I don't think it works like that. And I'm pretty sure most players have that as "Auto" or "Off". Basically, the players will detect if your TV supports 24p, and if the disc you're playing is 24p, it will display as such. Otherwise, "off" will apply pulldown with every 24p content.

Even if there's an "on" function, it will not convert in any way from 60fps to 24fps. There is no way to do that without dropped frames.

I'm glad Sony is committing to 60fps if that's the case.

Yes, 24p in the main settings is there to pass through a 24p source, not to force it on any sources which is why most players have a separate setting if you want to force 24p on 60i film-based content with 3:2 pulldown e.g. NTSC DVDs.

My Panny can force 24/25p during playback of >24p sources so even though I'm verr excite about the 60p presentation of Billy Lynn's I'll see if the forced 24p works. Even if it works on a technical level, it'll probably look quite stuttery and odd because, as Boz says, you're dropping frames that are intended to be there, unlike the reverse pulldown when dealing with 60i masters.

60p to 30p might be possible, if you are able to drop every alternate frame.

But not 24p. If this UHD BD came with 120p as originally shot, then it's possible to get 24p, by dropping every 4 frames. I'm pretty sure that's how we get the 24p for the 1080p Blu-ray.

Anyway, let's not overthink too much. 60p is what we're getting for UHD BD.

My Sony has an "on" option that forces everything to be 24fps. I'm not sure what the point of it is since, as we both said, it looks terrible, but it's there.

I take it that is a 1080p Blu-ray player?
Have you tried playing BDs of a higher frame rate? 30p, 50i or 60i and with 24p turned on? I'd like to know how did it project with that.

No I only tried it with a DVD. It was a Star Trek DVD I remember, and the spaceship skipped across the screen rather than move smoothly, so I never tried again.

The movie was... meh. It was more of a test of HFR than anything IMHO.

It's a war drama with, supposedly, some darkly comedic moments. Unfortunately, the movie fails, again IMHO, in the satyric areas. It's not biting enough when it needs to be. It pulls its punches.

Sweet. I wanted to see this before I even knew it was in HFR. Now that I know, I want to see it even more. I like HFR.

I'll probably go and get the 4K version, even though I don't have a 4K TV yet, just to future proof myself, and because it comes with a 3D version too. Besides, the 4K version is only a few dollars more than the regular Blu-ray. A shame we won't get the full 120FPS but 60FPS is pretty good too.

To those who say HFR looks bad, you'll get used to it. Hopefully in the future all films will do it. It's kind of like getting your TV calibrated. At first everything looks warm and yellow, but if you watch it on that for a while, you'll get used to it and going back you'll notice how blue everything looks.

UHD Blu-ray still had some teething pains when the specs. were adopted. They added 25p, 30p, 50p, and 60p, but not 48p or 120p. And then some idiot decided that NTSC displays still won't accept 25p and 50p signals (even though they can being that they're digital displays), so if they're doing a world-wide encode, PAL post houses still have to do an unnecessary frame conversion.

Considering the response to the Hobbits and this film I don't think HFR is the future, whether you're right about adjusting to it or not.
