Good news or bad news?

Someone to complement Van Persie and help Arsenal rise to another level or,
someone to replace Van Persie, as the die has already been cast ?

For example, even very experienced colorists may be unsure of how you grade the F65 images and this can lead to a host of real-world post production questions which are by no means trivial, i.e. -
Is F65 RAW footage like, for instance, ARRIRAW and how do you begin working on the F65 files?

Answer – Different than ARRIRAW. The F65 RAW data is in a single file MXF wrapper with audio tracks. The data (thank God no winding and rewinding, as that’s more for celluloid timers, they like the nostalgia aspect of that) should be first converted to a color space like ACES, P3 or rec709, although working in S-Gamut directly is doable….with considerations for the secondaries.

Should you start *from scratch* and just begin grading the raw images or, first apply a S-curve style film LUT?

Answer – The later or at least apply a gamma correction in order to work right with your particular display.

In summary, (Doctorossi should get my drift here ) the opportunity for digital colorists and post production supervisors to have available by the manufacturer, proper, structured training beforehand will take a lot of the beta-testing experience out of this part of the newest 4K acquisition device (and its filmmaking chain) to enter the market.
Here a LUT, there a LUT, everywhere a LUT, LUT ->

While I am =not=, repeat, NOT advocating piracy (I'm the guy that buys all my goddamn movies, thank you very much), this is an interesting turn of events for those of us old enough to remember ye olde format war:

Those scurvy scoundrels will require yet another “high-level summit” after 4KBD’s roll-out.

Now this film seems more suited to IMAX conversion than a lot of the 2K digital and Super35 productions playing out there for the past several years!

And, anyway, I really don’t think that “why Blu-ray disc sales are not better than they are” is signficantly because of any lack of an informed public as to the quality of Blu-ray, for even if those ‘quality unaware’ movie fans were ‘Blu-ray educated’, convenience still would be the predominating factor in their viewing options.

The filmmakers preferred method of exhibition of Samsara is an 8K Scan -> 4K DI -> 4K DCP , at least that’s according to producer Mark Magidson.

I concur. And, as to the allegation that Blu-ray doesn't adequately promote its advantage, what part of "Perfect Picture. Perfect Sound." don't they understand?

Peter, or to other locals inclined to reminisce about film history from the olden days, here’s a Head’s up to a SMPTE Hollywood Section meeting which is somewhat unusual in the sense that it is open to both members and non-members and no RSVP is needed. It’s tomorrow evening at the Academy's Dunn Theater at 1313 N. Vine St. (enter on Homewood Ave on the North Side of the theater).

I was wondering where you were?

I have many neighbors with which their young children watch a channel in SD because they know the number easily as one digit, i.e. Channel 4, and despite the fact that although the adults (parents) know that the HD version, i.e. Channel 404 in our neck of the woods is of superior PQ, they are too lazy to pick up the remote and switch the channel from 4 to 404 when they come home from work to watch the programming.

'Knowledge' is not the determining factor, in my opinion either.

I just encountered this exact issue at a friend's place, two weeks ago. This person was not only watching the SD feed for ease of access, but watching a 16:9 program with an additional anamorphic unsqueeze applied to it because going into the on-screen menu and changing the display setting required more effort than a picture with proper geometry was worth.

Needless to say, the picture had been radically improved by the time I left.

Not sure if you guys have it too, but up here they actually sub out the SD channel (lower number) to the HD station for that very reason...

But, yeah, I'm always amazed that people thought BD would be =more= successful than it already is. We've already way exceeded my expectations....

Has their been any studies done to quantify this assumption? I really can't be objective on this because the viewing quality is paramount in my enjoying a movie. But a survey of average viewers would be interesting to see if convenience is the preferred choice.

Anyway if I don't want to buy the movies because I only want to see it once Redbox Blu-ray rental for $1.50 would be my choice.

One advantage of DirecTV... their HD feeds are on the same channel number as their SD counterparts. You go to the HD version first... then channel up to go to the SD version, or you can simply change a setting in the box which hides the SD counterparts.

Speaking of DirecTV... they're already working on a topic I know you've been discussing: DirecTV planning for Ultra HDTV

I would have to ask one of the marketing V.P.s, as off-hand, I know of no large scale survey scientifically testing for this. I was speaking from anecdotal personal experience.
