Basically the first run of Sony 4K TVs in 2013 didn't have a HDCP 2.2 board installed (it's newer copy protection required by 4K players). They started up a program of on-site board installations in the UK a few months back (unlike in the US where they did it 18 months ago!), but because the board was out of stock they gave me a choice of waiting for the part or getting a brand new B series 2014 set (which has an HDCP 2.2 chip already installed). I chose the latter.

Nice option. Does the new one also do DCI/P3 color space?

Nah, just the same 601/709 options as the previous set. Seeing as they're probably gonna plump for Rec.2020 in the 4K BD spec I don't think we'll be seeing P3 on a mass-produced consumer display any time soon. Hopefully the 2015 models from various manufacturers will include some form of 2020 support (if not the full gamut itself then a decent gamut mapping system to transpose the chromaticities to the native gamut of the display), I guess we'll find out what their intentions are in January.

Everything I have been hearing has been leaning P3/DCI as the studios already have masters created as such. Joe Kane has major issues with rec 2020 as the color will not be perceived the same by everyone. I don't think 2020 would come anytime soon even if it eventually does.

The studios want P3, the manufacturers want 2020. Most of the various UHD "roadmap" slides that have been seen at presentations don't even mention P3. As for Joe Kane, I'll always take anything he says with a pinch of salt. Companies are already starting to add 2020 support to pro monitors and other hardware, like Canon:

http://learn.usa.canon.com/resources..._rec2020.shtml

Personally I think P3 is dead in the water re: home video.

I just bought the skynet edition from Target for $4 bucks, I haven't opened it yet. So even with the DNR and old as hell transfer I thought it was a decent deal.

That Genisys trailer got me excited for the Terminator series again.

Can anyone confirm what transfer the current American Blu-ray uses? I'm a huge nerd for outdated HD/digital tape technology.
According to information included in the THX Ultimate Edition, the first
[Show spoiler]American
HD transfer was created using D5-HD tapes.

Does every US home video release post-2000 use the same restoration/transfer for the video source?

Pretty sure T2 never had an official mono mix or release, unless they made prints for theaters that couldn't handle the Dolby Spectral or CDS equipment needs.

They did a new 1080p24 HD transfer in 2003 for the 'Extreme Edition' DVD, it's that which has been used on every Blu-ray since, albeit with different tweaks here and there, like the slight stretch that comes and goes across various editions, or the additional noise/dirt-removal pass that Lionsgate performed for the 'Skynet' release.

Additionally, I've always lambasted the audio on the Euro StudioCanal versions for sounding too 'echoey' in the rears and not having enough bass, but having dug out the old 1998 Live DVD and watched it again, the sound mix - which is supposed to be the original - shares those same traits. (I even bought and sold the first 'Squeeze' edition of T2 on laserdisc because I didn't like the echoey audio, obviously that was the old mix too.)

I'm guessing here, but now it seems like StudioCanal were given the original audio to work with when creating their versions over the past few years (like the 7.1 on the German HD DVD), and NOT the newer 5.1 EX mix - although the English EX track is on the Euro version of the most recent 'Skynet' Blu-ray, along with the German 7.1 mix.

And that's what kills me about the Skynet edition: I can't stand the soft, noise-reduced video but I love the 5.1 EX audio.

Yeah, the 1080p scan they did in 2003 barely lifted enough detail off the print to be considered high definition. Its definitely time for a 4K scan to be done. The master used on the last 2 blus was very weak!!

If a 4K remaster of T2 came out, it would be a definite first day purchase for me.

The Skynet edition wasn't bad but it definitely wasn't great it had quite a bit of DNR from what I remember. DNR an Blu ray is an oxymoron.

So, my current version of T2 is the 2007 HD-DVD with DTS-HD High Resolution Audio 5.1, 147 minutes. I've read much of this thread and did not notice how the Skynet Blu-ray would compare to the HD-DVD version.

I don't mind paying 5 bucks if the DTS-HD Master audio quality is better, but after reading so many complaints about the DNR on the Skynet BD, I'm not sure if the Skynet Blu-ray video quality would be any improvement over that of the HD-DVD. Anybody have the HD-DVD and compared them?

Oh, this is the one I have. It's listed on ebay:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/HD-DVD-Termi...item27f2b10d9e

Also, reading some old threads on various forums, the UK version I have gets high marks for video quality, so it does not seem like this Skynet Blu-ray version is going to have much better image quality. OTOH, who knows how long my HD-DVD players are going to last, so it may be worth $5 to have it on Blu-ray!

I'm not spending any more money on Terminator 2 until it gets a new 4K transfer. Living with Skynet until then...

When the day comes this has a 4K Blu-ray edition with a new 4K scan and 50-60 mbps bit-rate on the new format, HD audio at it's best, and all of the extras that wll be an awesome release date.

Keep in mind that terminator genisys is coming & T2 will get another reissue to tie into that disaster. Just like the robocop remake before it, we got a 4k remaster out of that forgotten mess.

You take the good , you take the bad & in the end you get a proper remaster
