This might shock some but I think I prefer to watch my Ultimate edition DVD then the Skynet edition Blu-Ray. The BD has more detail, better compression and better colour for sure, and the uncompressed audio is superior, but the Skynet edition just looks nothing and I mean nothing like film. It looks too digitized. The DVD has grain or actually it might be noise, but either way it looks more analog to me.

I know there is a lot of other pre-Skynet editions on BD that look better (even though they all share the same outdated master), but I'd rather wait for a remaster of which I'm sure Cameron will get to.. eventually.

I wish the Skynet edition or whatever future reissue they might crank out kept all the extras from the Ultimate Edition. I know its presentation is very LaserDisc-ish, but that was part of its encyclopedic thoroughness.

I give every copy I own a watch every so often and I have every copy, from the states anyway, on dvd and both U.S. blu-ray's so I feel ya.

[edit] In fact, given how you maintain that the gun sounds are more meaty in the "original" mix, certain parts of the Live DVD mix place less emphasis on the gun sounds and more on the atmospherics, like when Sarah's firing up at the T-1000 in the lift during the escape from Pescadero. The report of the gun has far more bite and impact in the 5.1EX, whereas it's dialled down in favour of adding much more reverb to the rears in this "original" mix.
I said by all reports, this is people who know a lot better than me.
Nice use of search tho!, but yes I think the mix is not correct to what I saw, but other more learned people on the net say this is the CDS mix.
The near field mix came with the first Se LD then the ex mix was another mix.
I know I am mostly alone in remembering what I heard, but the 3 mixes factually existand I see no reason for the theatrical edition not having the original mix lossless, if it is how I remember or not.

What do you mean, "nice use of search"? If you're referring to your comments about the gun sounds, that's from memory. I never forget an outlandish claim.

Alls I can say is, if the Live DVD is the original mix then it's simply not a night and day difference with what we have now. The 'pew pew' gunshots from the T-1000 are still there, the T-800's shotgun mixed with cannon fire is still there, the lion roars mixed into the explosions are still there, the biggest difference is how the rears have a wider kinda sound that really emphasises the ambience rather than discrete effects, which is understandable for a mix that was intended to play in theaters at the dawn of the digital 5.1 era. Modern near-field remixes (of any movie) play down that overt 'spaciousness' of the rears because, as the name implies, they're intended for home viewing where the speakers won't be any more than a few feet away from the audience.

What more enlightenment can I get? The Live DVD is supposed to have the original mix, and having compared it to the 5.1EX mix and the SE Laserdisc (both newer mixes, as you say) it's really, really not that different, with the biggest change being more emphasis on the discrete rears as I mentioned above.

Wait, lemme guess, it's your thread at OT.com, right? I still cannot believe that some people are using the trailer as the reference for the original mix. But given that some of OT.com's more rational members have come to the same conclusions I have, I think you might just have to chalk this up to your memory not being as infallible as you think it is. And pigs might fly.

I have said and will say again if I am wrong I would admit it.
But you fight that fight, implying irrationality when a few people have agreed with me is an insulting leap.
Maybe your blind rage at how Sony let you down with your 4k display purchase has clouded your views on everything.

"Blind rage", haha, good one. I bet you've been holding on to that zinger for a while. It's true that I've been very disappointed with Sony's handling of 4K in general, giving more and more goodies to new purchasers whilst the early adopters got left to rot, but seeing as they replaced my year-old 2013 set with a brand new 2014 model over the HDCP board issue, I'm good. Really.

That's odd, I haven't moaned about my TV for at least 3 days.

And my unabashed dislike of Sony as a company stems from the fact that I worked under their yoke (albeit indirectly) for too many years and I've seen their corporate idiocy firsthand, so any chance I get to stick the boot in, I damned well take it.

That was my first thought, but I thought I would refrain from going for such an obvious joke.

But thank you for making the joke that had to be made. My willpower was fading.

Nah, I ain't North Korean, and I didn't work under the big S in anything like as fancy as the entertainment divisions. I worked in a Sony Centre, and had plenty of trips to Sony's UK HQ to see what "genius" marketing ideas they'd cooked up for the year, and the head of direct marketing lived down the road from my store so he was always popping in and delivering his sage nuggets of, ah, wisdom.

You have to admit they have the best gaming console right now though, right?

I'm not much of a gamer, truth be told. I've got a PS3, but that's only because I picked up a US PS3 as a region A Blu-ray deck (it was my first BD player in general, actually) and I bought a few games on PSN for the sake of nostalgia. So even though I've now got a multi-region player I still keep the PS3 because I don't want to throw away the money I spent on those PSN games, and I break out Daytona USA (which looks magnificent in 1080p60) and Wipeout 3D occasionally.

When Cameron feels like it. Of course he's now busy with the Avatar sequels and the eventual Blu-ray releases of True Lies and The Abyss.

If you don't mind me asking Geoff, what happened to your first 4k tv? I saw last page that it had to be replaced.
