That's the only version of The Abyss available so far. I tried watching it on HBO, but I found myself missing all my favorite character moments from the Special Edition, that I had to stop watching. The Abyss is my favorite film from Cameron. My wedding ring is a recreation of Bud's.

Yeah, the special edition is the only way to watch it IMHO. Just like Aliens and T2 it is Cameron's preferred cut.

I'll still take the theatrical in a pinch, but I'm getting used to the Abyss special edition now and it doesn't annoy me nearly as much (if at all) as the SEs of Aliens or T2.

It does for me. The entire third act is changed in The Abyss. With the theatrical cut we
[Show spoiler]hardly understand the creature's motivations.
This is played out much better in the special edition cut and it doesn't affect the pacing.

I always saw their motivation as this man gave up his life to save theirs and indeed that of his wife and colleagues, so they decided to save him/them and show themselves to the world in the process, because once the humans were saved it was going to be difficult to keep a lid on the NTI's activities anyway.

The 'love conquers all' theme that Cameron cherishes so much is still very much intact in the theatrical cut, it's more that the nuts and bolts of ultimately reaching that resolution were changed. But yes, the special edition does feel like a more complete cut of the film, I love it for the 'Willing' singalong alone.

I hate that DVD because it's non-anamorphic, but it's all we have at the moment so I have held onto it.

I had forgotten that it wasn't in the Theatrical Version and was very disappointed when the scene blew past that moment while watching it on TV.

I looked through the last dozen or so pages and haven't seen anything noted, but tonight I popped in my T2 Blu and wanted to watch some of the interactive features with the storyboard PiP. I coudn't get it to work though. Was that a BD-Live feature, and I'm guessing if it is, the servers are offline?

I've had a hankering to watch T2: Judgment Day again.

I know that this has probably been discussed time and time again in this thread, but is the Skynet Edition preferable to the original 2006 Blu-ray, or would I be better off buying the original Blu-ray, just as I bought the original Blu-ray release of Predator?

Then again, I could just wait for the inevitable 4K restoration...

The recent 5/19 release is the best. It isn't a new master, but it's DNR free.

This is the best version now available Great Owl.

It's the same transfer as the Skynet version but without all of the DNR. I now just keep the Skynet edition for the special features.

I'm sure a 4K release isn't really far off but that being said I'm more than happy with the Skynet Edition. You should be able to find it on the cheap too, I paid $5 Canadian for mine so even if you eventually wanted to upgrade it you wouldn't be taking a big hit or anything.

Thanks, everyone! I had just assumed that the newer release was the same transfer as the Skynet release, so it's nice to hear otherwise.

Technically speaking, the best version available is still any of the Japanese "Premium Edition" releases, if only for the fact they have the audio commentaries and theatrical trailers while still being DNR-free.

But do they have featurettes like the newest release?

They mean best video quality, which is the new Lionsgate US disc. If you'd rather have commentary than best PQ though, sure. I just kept the Skynet edition for the commentary.

Same. put them in the Best Buy Steelbook. Of course, I only watch the new 2015 version now though. So much better looking than The DNR Edition, oh I mean Skynet. My apologies!!! LOL
