sure...but when it comes time for them to start buying movies...they'll be at a severe disadvantage. especially when they realize Disney only releases on Blu-ray. a lot of those cheap players will be returned or exchanged...or supplemented with a Blu-ray player purchase. the cheap ones may sell...but again...i really think this helps out Blu-ray because it gets the general public to step out of ignorance and through the door into HD. cheap hd dvd players will serve as the tunnel leading toward the Blu party room. and that's that.

I know the price of these is an issue for us, but a player that has no support is still worthless. The BDA knows about this and WILL take action in time for the shopping season. Either WB will get involved, or there will be new lower prices for BD players on the shelves soon.
Just calm down and wait, they will not take this sitting down.

The following xmas they were under the $200 mark and everyone was buying a modulator so they could watch them. I would get into demo after demo and tell people that your missing the point of DVD if your hooking it up through a modulator and don't have surround sound. At that point it was a fancy VCR that couldn't record.

People would care less and buy the DVD player anyway. THe 95% of the market that hasn't chosen a format yet are not philes like the bulk of us and will not always make a "proper" decision that is thought out. Case in point, my husband wants a dvd player for xmas. But they hook it up through the coax with a modulator?????

Watch how many 720p TV's will fly off the shelf this xmas and this $199 DuD will be the perfect compliment for it. THey don't need the 1080P, so the units may sell????
Hey sir you can have this for just $199 to got with that tv.
What's the catch? (reflex)
No catch sir. It's on sale.
Well, how about THAT other one? (suspicious)
Well, those are not on sale sir and you don't need them for that tv.
Are you saying the tv is junk? (Angry)
Hummm!
Take everything back. See you next year

and no one seems to care that it's also an A2... it's already obsolete, hence the low low price of crap.

We have that at BB and so far the are NOT flying of the shelves. But they are collecting dust.
Most consumers are now better educated and are aware of blu's superiority, thats not to say that there are not people who are totally ignorant and will pick up a cheap player. But also take into account the massive blu displays in BB and Target. That also has a huge influence.

lol... unfortunately, most people at who buy electronics at walmart don't care for the best (else why would they be there). they care for cheap and they know cheap doesn't equal the best. so, hd dvd has a great place at walmart... cheap and second best

I did buy one of those players from Circuit City, with a $40 off coupon... but even with that, I am still considering returning it.

I am really starting to think this is their final do or Die attack.

You could have put that $160 in a 50 gallon drum and lit it on fire. It would have been just as productive.

It goes both ways. They may want films by paramount/dreamworks/universal.

I am not sure why everyone assumes that people are waiting around to buy this at Walmart. If CC, Amazon, or etc isn't sold out at that price point then it is much ado about nothing.

So, last week my brother bought the 360 Addon and got the garbage bag filled with HD DVDs. Last night I text messaged him:

"Just bought the Spider-man Trilogy on Blu-ray. Are you gonna get it on HD DVD?"

This is exactly my point.

The year the sub $200 dvd players were flying off the shelf my accessory attachment was through the roof because of all the modulators I was selling with them.

The only returns after xmas we would get is the people who thought their player was defective because of the "black bars" across the top/bottom of the screen.

Where are the megahits lined up from those vaulted catalogs? I don't see them on the hidefdigest.com lineup, nor have I heard them announced. You are fooling yourself if you think that Paramount/Universal/Dreamworks are going to discount their biggest Balance Sheet assets.
