I think I have the shortest answer to your question:
Q: What is blu-ray doing?
A: Winning.

The price is not enough to make me go neutral. The only thing that could get me to buy HDDUD is if WB made the stupid move to HDDUD. I love WB movies.

This cheap player crap is be used for one reason only, WB.

Price definately matters, but not THAT much. HD DVD has been cheap and giving stuff away from the start, yet they are very behind. Price matters yes, but there are other things to keep in mind. This fire sale HD DVD will sell well, and probably sell out, it may delay the mass adaption of blu-ray but it force the mass adaption of HD DVD.

That's the problem....you guys seem to think attention is all they need. What they need is SOFTWARE SALES and going by all of this logic I've been reading it's not going to change ANYTHING in the software splits because these people according to all of you rent.

So when BR has 80:20 splits I'm sure HD side will just say "but, but,....our cheap players are selling". All they are doing is selling cheap players....they are not selling software.

I won't ever say anything against a reason to supplement YOUR hometheater. I just don't think that "HD DVD is better because it is cheaper." is a good argument and it typically is used by HD DVD fanboys to make themselves feel better.

Have fun with you HD DVD player, I hope you enjoy.

Oh I agree, HD-DVD is DEFINITELY NOT better in any way other than price. But if it's cheap enough for anyone to own it. Why not?? It's not like it's gonna kill you to own it. LOL But it could be a waste of money should Blu-Ray win totally which may or may not happen anytime soon and it's not like $199 is alot to some of us. Lots of factors involved there though and until then I don't think there is any harm in being purple if you can afford it...or at least be objective about it. Being totally one way or another or at least not open minded about it is just silly to me....

Attention is what they need to get more movie companies to go HD exclusive like courting warner which is how the Toshiba camp plays ball.

If they prove the $199 pricepoint is successfull this will sell more software when there are more cheap players looking down the road.

The masses, mom and pop's with the sparking new HDTV's don't care about the Xbox give away's and such. If they see a sub $200 hd player I think it will be more tempting to the avg joe's. But that's just my opinion. Seems to be coming to fruition so far. People are buying them.

Hence the reason I did not buy as well. The big 3 and Poseidon. I can wait a few months.

Attention you say.....you think selling 100k of these cheap players or millions of PS3's is going to get attention?

Again, we just had a long conversation how everyone seems to think the high price of TVs, stereos and software won't mean anything to the people buying the cheap HD's because they will rent. If that's the case how do you court Warner when BR is outselling them 2:1. You can quote all the players you want BUT if you are not selling the software what does that get you?

I think the truth falls in the middle some where:

1. These toshiba units will sell out for xmas gifts
2. This doesn't translate to software sales though, which is the ultimate barometer (A year with ps3, I've only bought superman/spidey trilogy) I rent!
3. Don't forget a $399 ps3 with spidey 3 that hits in a few days and will create add on opportunities
4. This is a clearance sale/test for Toshiba to show the movie companies that $199 is the sweet spot to start the snowball down hill

Inorder for this to be successful they have to show improvements in sales. If it doesn't translate to software sales......Warner will be BR exclusive early next year.

You can show all the sales you want of the cheap player but how does that help stuidos when it doesn't make them any money? I wouldn't be surprised if these same people buy the highdef players and then buy DVD's instead because they are cheaper. That's honestly is what I think is going to happen.

Any they will continue to until the prices for the dominate format come down. Otherwise HD media will be for an elitist group of people and many won't even care.

Whats to say that Toshiba/M$ won't pull another one out of their A$$ at the last minute. Pay Warner what they would lose in sales to go HD Exclusive like they did paramount?

I agree, if warner goes blu it's over, but HD keeps throwing these last sec hail mary's to stay in the game somehow???

It really doesn't matter what you say, you seem to have a very relaxed (I don't care what the competition does) attitude, which is fine, that's your right. However, you and I and everyone else on this forum know that this cheapass crap is going to sell and it is going to sell big, simply because it is cheap. Forget about 1080i/1080p, lossless audio, more popular titles, etc. When it comes down to really really cheap prices, people are going to buy, there is no escaping this fact and there is nothing you can say or do to change this. But the BDA can say and do a lot, they simply choose not to. From strictly a business perspective, they are eliminating at least 60% of their potential market for the sake of a couple of bucks. Not logical. They need to lower prices, it is as simple as that. Sony & Disney are doing their part, we (the consumer and Blu-ray supporters) are doing our part. It's time for the Fox's, Samsung's Pioneer's, Phillip's, etc. to do theirs.

From what i see.. SP2 and SP3 look HORRENDOUS on DVD vs the BluRay. While the Superbit DVD for SP1 look nice for a DVD, but still is a difference on BluRay
Wait for the loading, hover you're mouse
It is better on Blu-ray (after looking at the website), however, not as substantial as I would have liked.

I do plan on getting lossless sometime soon, so I will probably go ahead and get these for the slight upgrade in PQ on 1 & 2 and the AQ for all 3.

Thanks for the link.

This is just a guess but I've been a retailer and buying product for my Blockbuster stores for over 7 years. Back when DVD first came out it was MUCH cheaper cost wise and I was able to price DVD $19.99 or less (without losing money). The cost is $2-3 more every title.

If you think studios are looking to drop prices I think you are in for a disappointment. I know for a fact Fox LOVES rental prices for their new releases. They HATED the fact DVD has been devalued so much. Warner was probably the leader for slashing prices on DVD (catalog wise) and I expect them to lead this in the future. But don't ever expect New Releases to change in price. Just hope it doesn't go up anymore.

The amount of money that Warner would take would be HUGE!!!
