I think I have the shortest answer to your question:
Q: What is blu-ray doing? A: Winning. |

The price is not enough to make me go neutral. The only thing that could get me to buy HDDUD is if WB made the stupid move to HDDUD. I love WB movies.
This cheap player crap is be used for one reason only, WB. |

Price definately matters, but not THAT much. HD DVD has been cheap and giving stuff away from the start, yet they are very behind. Price matters yes, but there are other things to keep in mind. This fire sale HD DVD will sell well, and probably sell out, it may delay the mass adaption of blu-ray but it force the mass adaption of HD DVD.

So when BR has 80:20 splits I'm sure HD side will just say "but, but,....our cheap players are selling". All they are doing is selling cheap players....they are not selling software. |

Oh I agree, HD-DVD is DEFINITELY NOT better in any way other than price. But if it's cheap enough for anyone to own it. Why not?? It's not like it's gonna kill you to own it. LOL But it could be a waste of money should Blu-Ray win totally which may or may not happen anytime soon and it's not like $199 is alot to some of us. Lots of factors involved there though and until then I don't think there is any harm in being purple if you can afford it...or at least be objective about it. Being totally one way or another or at least not open minded about it is just silly to me.... |

If they prove the $199 pricepoint is successfull this will sell more software when there are more cheap players looking down the road. |

Hence the reason I did not buy as well. The big 3 and Poseidon. I can wait a few months.

Again, we just had a long conversation how everyone seems to think the high price of TVs, stereos and software won't mean anything to the people buying the cheap HD's because they will rent. If that's the case how do you court Warner when BR is outselling them 2:1. You can quote all the players you want BUT if you are not selling the software what does that get you? |

I think the truth falls in the middle some where:
1. These toshiba units will sell out for xmas gifts 2. This doesn't translate to software sales though, which is the ultimate barometer (A year with ps3, I've only bought superman/spidey trilogy) I rent! 3. Don't forget a $399 ps3 with spidey 3 that hits in a few days and will create add on opportunities 4. This is a clearance sale/test for Toshiba to show the movie companies that $199 is the sweet spot to start the snowball down hill |

You can show all the sales you want of the cheap player but how does that help stuidos when it doesn't make them any money? I wouldn't be surprised if these same people buy the highdef players and then buy DVD's instead because they are cheaper. That's honestly is what I think is going to happen. |

Any they will continue to until the prices for the dominate format come down. Otherwise HD media will be for an elitist group of people and many won't even care.

I do plan on getting lossless sometime soon, so I will probably go ahead and get these for the slight upgrade in PQ on 1 & 2 and the AQ for all 3. Thanks for the link. |

If you think studios are looking to drop prices I think you are in for a disappointment. I know for a fact Fox LOVES rental prices for their new releases. They HATED the fact DVD has been devalued so much. Warner was probably the leader for slashing prices on DVD (catalog wise) and I expect them to lead this in the future. But don't ever expect New Releases to change in price. Just hope it doesn't go up anymore. |
