This is, in my opinion, the single most defining statement regarding this whole "$199" DUD player panic. And he's absolutely right. It's the equivalancy of buying a DVD player for cheap and then telling the purchaser that it won't be compatable with any future releases. You're going to have an awful lot of angry consumers on your hands in just a couple of months...

I don't like the idea of promoting the other format but i just read on another forum that these might actually be selling for under $100. I find it extraordinary that they could sell even shit at that price.

I have read a lot of posts in this thread and in others where people are using labels and trying to counter-attack valid reasonable assertions from others regarding BDA's strategy, player/title prices, the cheapass < $200 players, exclusivity, etc. with personal attacks (myself included). When anyone comes up and says "Hey, we need to compete here, if that means lowering our player prices or title prices by a couple of bucks, I don't see the harm". Lowering player prices by $50 or $75 per unit seems reasonable to me. The point is to at least be competitive. But some on this forum seem to think this is BS or arrogant thinking or "You're a troll" or "everyone is paniking". No it is none of these, it is just people making honest observations that, to compete, BD prices have to come down (just a little bit). No one is saying release a $99.99 BD player or give away BD players for free (like Toshiba), but there are a lot of folks who honestly believe the BDA or one or two of its members need to do what Sony (40GB PS3) & Disney (BOGO) are doing. This is the argument that seems to be getting attacked over and over by folks who seem to think the BDA is just doing fine. Well, I guess I will have to agree to disagree with those who say prices and the BDA are doing fine.
The Toshiba players have always been lower and yet it's still a 2:1 ratio..I think that's first issue.

The second issue is we saw exactly this kind of argument about Transformers blowing blu-ray out of the water and the tide turning because the "sleeping at the wheel" BDA wasn't doing anything. BOGO

Third (and fourth) Sony has reduced the cost on the PS3 with the 40GB for this xmas (MILLIONS sell over the holiday period) and taken big financial hits on the PS3 to seed the market initially..being solely responsible for catching up and blowing past HD DVD's year lead in fact.

Fifth - there are other alternatives to reducing to price to compete and yet your argument is that's what they must do to compete. A singular focus. That money could be spent on offering or engaging those millions of PS3 owners that haven't been using them as Blu-ray players for example etc. There are many responses just like the BOGO for example. The studios making decisions care about software sales not hardware sales and yet the have to reduce player prices. WB doesn't care about hardware sales.

Given all of the above (and more) and what point do people stop screaming the sky is falling .. instead of looking at the what has actually happened as things have come up. It's the constant assumption/repitition the sky is falling - despite the history - and the ignoring of valid arguments to focus on a single point is where the troll comments come from I believe.

But then again I'm a mindless pom-pom cheerleading blu-ray supporter that didn't/doesn't think about things..so what would I know - never mind.

the good thing is most people making the jump and just droped 1k+ on a tv arent gonna be to trusting to a 100-199$ player... hopefully most people are smart enough to see they are just trying to sell things people wont use in 6-12mo.

It's beyond me why they don't exploit the Playstation Store more fully. Each Friday it's a piddling one or two trailers for discs. That thing should be jammed full of Blu-ray propaganda, special deals, printable coupons etc etc aimed at all those PS3 owners who are buying games but are hedging a bit on the movies. (80% of PS3 owners by Toshiba's estimate.)

Compared to traditional advertising it is absurdly cheap and easy to get the message across to this perfectly targeted captive audience on the PS Store. There is a big failure of marketing imagination there; it should be addressed long before any further BD player price cuts which might get you a few more hedgy customers. First get the existing player owners buying more!

They aren't selling them any longer, they're getting shut of unwanted stock.

NO ONE who seriously expects to win the format war would be selling players at Toshibas prices, they're truely desperate.

Personally I can care less on how much their low end players are priced at. Lets really compare the models that will output 1080p and its not that far off. Also, I wonder if they are getting rid of it since the rumored Triple Layer HD DVD are coming out and according to the bits, it might have backwards compatibility issues with older HD DVD players...

Excellent point!
You should suggest that to our Sony insiders.

So what happens if they sell a couple 100,000 of these players? Perhaps they sell 2 movies per player or create a demand at netflix to where they buy more stock of hd-dvd? If it's not a credible threat to lose some market share I don't know what is.

Will it decide the war? Hardly.... Pro-long it? Perhaps.... Is it no threat at all to where the BDA needs to just ignore it? Seems to be the popular consensus....

If no one has posted this... SPIDER-MAN 1 & 2 ARE DUAL LAYERED DISCS. Stop saying they're BD-25's if you haven't actually checked. The same thing happened with the M:I single releases where people said they were actually dual layered but they're actually the exact same single layered discs sold in the box set. But again, the first 2 films are DUAL LAYERED.

EDIT: Sorry, I see someone else already posted the exact same thing...

Default kmart hd dvd exclusive

i dont know if anybody read about but there is some huge news for hd dvd that kmart went hd dvd exclusive. I cant believe that the largest retail store could do this. It could be the end for blu-ray.

Three problems with your statement...SS316SRV has pointed out LARGEST RETAILER? Don't think so. The other two are that you said it was HUGE (actually very small since they have said--taken from HDD--that they would only stock A2s this Christmas) and COULD BE THE END OF BLU-RAY--that's hilarious!

I think I saw an article that said Kmart was owned by Sears. That was one reason.

Other reason:

Kmart, Walmart and Sears are all pretty much known for low prices. Is it really any wonder why they support HD DVD? At $200, it has a much lower price point.

They all still support blu-ray by having the PS3, which I believe is still the best selling blu-ray player.
