Probably. lol No, I plan to be realistic, but only time will tell.

I was recently asked "what are you going to do when the next format comes along." I used to worry about this a lot. Then I realized that many films won't really get better than they are on Blu-ray. Perhaps when the time does come I will just buy the new releases on 4K/8K. I don't know, there are too many Blu's to be bought and I don't have time to worry about this.

Hell even LP records have made a come back, read the other day that sales now are the highest they have been since the early 90's....I would argue that even if Blu's are the last format they may be worth more in the future because there will always be collector's of physical media.

I purchased the blu-ray of Django Unchained, which came with a Ultraviolet copy that I added to my list of about 20 others that I have available to stream via Vudu. I rarely watch my Ultraviolet copies unless I'm in another room that doesn't have a blu-ray player. Anyway, the other day I went on Vudu to stream Django, and got a message that there was some kind of issue and I needed to try again later. I tried about 5 times over a half-hour period, but still no Django.

To me, that is the strongest reason to never go entirely to streaming. I want to watch a movie when I want to watch a movie, and I don't ever want to be told that I can't because of the provider's technical issues.

Everyone has a limited income...

NFL players have a limited income.

It's all relative.

No disagreement from me because that's pretty much my approach as well. I've accepted the reality that most of the vintage catalogue titles I'm interested in are already approaching a max out point via 4k harvests with 2k workflow and 1080p Blu-ray output to screens in the 50" to 60" range. So expecting much of an improvement from a 4k harvest with 4k workflow to 4k output at that same viewing scale seems very unrealistic (and I don't have room for a home theatre much larger, maybe 80"). So the content I'm interested is already at the outer limits of its quality curve for my modestly scaled home video setup...any benefits from resolutions beyond that will be incremental at best. As was once said about vintage analogue audio recordings "There's nothing left in those grooves".

With that said though, my next monitor will definitely be 4k, and my next player will also be 4k (probably a PS4?). At the rate these Utra-HD sets and systems are already falling, in probably 2 years or less I'll be able to buy that kind of gear for thousands less than it is now, which is already thousands less than it was last year or the year before that. If that seems like a contradiction, not really, because there are some reel benefits to the expanded 4k colour space, which even nicely mastered Blu-rays will benefit from when upscaled to 4k. Actually, the upscaling itself will be better because the 4k algorithms are more sophisticated. To my eyes, Blu to 4k is significantly better looking than DVD to Blu ever was.

So although I've staked my claim in Blu-ray as the last 'hard media' capture for my vintage collection - which will likely be the approach by studios as well who will rerelease perennials like Wizard of Oz and Lawrence of Arabia in native 4k, but will be unlikely to touch any of my treasured old B&W Noirs and such - I still want that 4k system to deliver my 1080p discs as beautifully as they can look given their lower rez source(s) to begin with.

Nope. Like I've said in the past, with Digital movies on the rise, I honestly think that Blu-Ray is going to be the last popular home video format. No doubt that 4K will eventually become a format as well, but given how hard it was for Blu-ray to gain a foothold, 4K will have even more of a uphill better.

My long winded way of saying I have no problems collecting blu-rays.

Why does everyone thing "streaming" will be the next format? It'll be digital downloads, just like music. And just like music, I can't wait for that to happen. And it'll happen sooner than people think.

Now that I am six years in, it looks like the end is near for this format. I am wondering if it is time to start setting aside my movie buying cash for new equipment and a display. Its so funny because I had probably 700 dvds that I had gotten over a ten year period, and of course I never watched a bunch and some only once, and I swore with blu ray, I would only rebuy my favorites, but low and behold, my blu ray collection is approaching my dvd one and now I have even repurchased some blu's as they get upgraded with better transfers. I opened my closet today and stared at 20 unwatched titles that I bought while on sale, etc. My wife says I am worse than a woman who gets sucked into coupons, sales, etc.

Anyway, this time around I want to be more pro active and plan ahead more. Not sure, but this may be the year to stop getting blu.
There is a thread almost once a week professing the death of Blu-ray... and every single one is dead wrong.

Just because 4k resolution is a reality doesn't mean there is any reasonable time table for bring it to a physical format.
- There is no media format even conceived of to hold 4K movies...just theories.
- There is no media player even conceived of to play 4K media... just theories
- Current scams claiming 4K resolution are simply "mastered in 4K" or players upconverting from blu, which isn't really 4k.
- Streaming content can't really find bandwidth in order to carry 4k content.

So I ask you, why is it that you think Blu-ray is dead. After all, even when the next physical format does finally arrive (10 years from now), blu will be around for a good decade or 2 after that. DVD is still doing just fine, although declining, it is plentiful for those that want it.

The other thing to consider.... The difference between DVD and Blu-ray was noticeable to most of US, but not widely accepted for quite a while by the general public. The difference became noticeable at around a 32" display, where 1080 lines could be appreciated. The size TV needed to actually see a difference at 4K... around 80". How many people realistically are going to have 80" TV's... Not many, so most people will be VERY slow to adopt a new format... much slower than they were to adopt Blu

Take a hard look at your collection.

What do you rewatch and what don't you? You should be able to know your own tastes by now. DVD is when I really discovered myself in movies. I was buying just to explore stuff I hadn't seen. Going through what was considered classic, favorite director's and actor's filmographies.

Now I'm pretty refined. I know what to rent and what demands a purchase.

Buy less. Rent more. Skip one purchase and that's 20 trips to the red box.

I have a limited income too so I know what it's like, but I wouldn't give up on Blu-Ray. It could be the last physical format for movies.

I don't see blu dying off anytime soon. I love having my physical disks so I ignore all this talk of streaming and digital downloads.
