Yes, I'm enjoying this thread and the "Why are TV shows displayed in FULLSCREEN aspect ratio but not movies?" thread. Very entertaining.

These smaller companies are flourishing right now, regardless of whatever data and numbers you pull out from the major studios.
"very healthy" and "flourishing" are pretty strong descriptors.
I'm more inclined to think they're merely getting by. Which is okay, as long as they get enough business to actually put out films.

Why, when movies or commercials show the near future, are the displays/TVs clear?!! Do we really want to see through the image on our screen!? I certainly don't

This was a great article, thanks for sharing. As someone who enthusiastically collects vinyl and casually buy BR here and there. Yeah, physical media won't go away but it will be niche and expensive as **** in little less than a decade.

I highly doubt that. I might believe 15 or 20 years, but not in the next several years.

There is no fundamental problem there, you could put way more obscure shit online than you possibly could release through retail - but the companies involved would need to rethink how they license their content. And I think once someone figures out a good way monetize all this otherwise useless content gathering dust in their archives, everyone will soon follow.

please read what I said

Studios b4 claimed they could / would put all material they couldn't not make enough releasing on discs, now they say they cant cause of mastering and bandwidth cost.

People fell for their lies

Where did they claim any of those things?
Paranoid rants aside, its really not a point of sane debate that online distribution is a good thing for marginally viable content. There is no way that, say, the Apple app store could be a an actual retailer selling physical products and have as much "inventory" as they do now.

It's still a very profitable and healthy market for new release movies. TV and catalog movies are just getting by, but will survive as a niche market.

Trade Shows, Interviews online and ore is where they said all that.

None of what I said was a rant and not paranoid, that is what wackos say when they try to defeat the facts presented.

What you fail to understand they marginal content will never see the light of day on streaming

You can look at the music industry as an example of where DVD/Blurays will be heading.

When a title like The Motown Singles collection [all the A sides/B sides] by year goes out of print it's still available as a download and the physical becomes a collector's item.

When an artist as big as Taylor Swift releases new music it's available in all formats. Taylor gave Target an exclusive version and that sold about 400,000 copies because 1. it was Taylor and 2. it was a special edition. As I recall it was close to a million sales first week with about 500-600,000 downloads.

So for new films like your Jurassic World, Mad Max all formats will be released. I could see a time when a film like Still Alice is only released through streaming. Only the big popcorn films will get the physical release.

But for an older film like Goodbye Charlie, it will only be available for download or streaming. I bought the film on itunes, wish it came out on bluray or even DVD!

So there will a co-existing with the studios deciding which older catalog titles are worthy of a physical release. We will also have the smaller companies putting out some of those films on bluray like Shout Factory, Olive, Twilight Time. And out of print stuff being reissued cheaply like the releases from Mill Creek.

Lots of out of print music titles are being reissued by smaller music companies. Hip-O select released 3 volumes of Chuck Berry and all went out of print. They were going for big bucks until the market was killed by Bear Family's complete Chuck Berry Box set.

The question isn't when do movies start going out of print, but when do they stop manufacturing the machines to play them--be it blu-ray or dvd players?

Once that happens, then those of us who refuse to go digital will be forced to confront the inevitability of our tragic fate.

My advice would be to get a 1080p or higher monitor and at least two PC BD drives. They are much more reliable for playing discs than standalone players especially in the long term. I have a 2009 Asus BD-Rom and a 2011 Sony BD-RW drive. I have still yet to find a BD or DVD that will not play in either one and we're talking several hundred discs each.. They also update much faster than a typical player in terms of FW. You also don't have to worry about the power supply going bad as they are powered by USB.

Fortunately most players should last 5 years ( maybe more, or less depending on brand). UHD players are also sure to be backwards compatible. Basically I think it's a safe bet we will have at least 10 years more of retail presence in your typical Wal mart or Best Buy. If I'm ever worried about players "disappearing" I will just buy an extra or two of my favorite hardware at the time. Basically I will be dead long before finding a functional blu ray playback device will ever be a problem.

I can possibly see PC blu-ray drives being harder to source, since their existence is already more largely ignored. But even with blu ray being almost nonexistent on PC, the drives are available now and have been for years. So its hard to say even they will "disappear" anytime soon. Even if all drive manufacturers gave up on the format, it probably takes awhile to move through old stock.

This thread has completely been derailed. They are just bringing out 4K Blu-Ray players. Some people should just stop being so damn paranoid. Disc's bring in over 20-25 Billions of dollars yearly around the globe. Yeah like studios is gonna throw away such a huge cashcow no freaking way. and some places like out in the country will never have good internet connections they are not gonna stream/Digital.
Bottomline Physical media like Blu-Ray is not going anywhere

Right. What will go away is the cheap prices on some titles. We might find ourselves paying Twilight Time prices for nearly everything in the future except for a studio blockbuster like say Avengers 4 or Star Wars 12.
