I dunno, for me streaming is just replacing renting. When people used to rent from video stores, there were the cinephiles who purchased movies, often on laserdisc. Now, instead of renting movies at the video store, folks stream movies while the cinephiles purchase their films on blu-ray. The DVD era was a bit of an anomaly because so many average joes purchased physical media, often because it was cheaper than renting, and I think that skews things a bit. Buying movies on physical media is just settling back into its natural order of things I think.

Yes, this; Netflix and the like are fantastic, but it's a video store, as my wife found out the other day when she went to watch, I think, Frances Ha again to find it's gone. Now I'm sure pretty much everything is available to stream from somewhere, but I don't want to have to pay for every service available to have a semi-stable library. Important and favourite things eventually find their way to disc at our gaff, no matter how many times we've streamed them.

I am still renting BDs from Netflix for all of the obvious reasons: Better PQ and AQ and I can return when I feel like it. Not only that, but I can watch the extras. I can even watch the extras on rental discs where they are locked out thanks to AnyDVD HD. Another thing that bothers me with streaming is that not all titles have subtitles.

Well you can buy digital licenses that supposedly guarantee you the movie forever, although I'm not sure how that'll actually work out. Make no mistake, if I'm buying a movie or show, I'll take a physical disc every time-- I'd rather have the physical product, and of course the quality of a Blu-Ray still beats HD streaming.

But as for Netflix's model, the whole point is you don't need the content to stick around forever. You see a movie you want to watch, you watch it. Just like people were watching HBO back in the day. Sometimes movies pop up, sometimes they go out. Sites like IGN are actually good for letting you know what films are leaving and coming in every month. I'll check what's leaving and make a point to watch it before the month ends.

Now, for the movies or shows you really love, watch on a fairly regular basis, then hoping they're on Netflix is obviously not going to work. I remember one guy on the IGN boards was wishing Netflix would get the Blade and Matrix movies-- when I suggested he just buy the movies, himself and other posters responded like I was a crazy relic from ye-olden-times

I really don't see the need or desire to buy content digitally, there is no sense of ownership. I prefer to stream on Netflix than buy digitally because as others have said, streaming is a good substitute for renting.

The studios would still want control over their movies. Even if you could fit every movie ever made on a flash drive they'd be filled with DRM and could only be played on authorized devices.

The studios could easily release DRM-free downloads and not worry about controlling their content in the present, but they don't. Technological advances in the future will just make them want more control over their content.

The only way to prevent the studios from having absolute control over all content in the future is to not buy the content that they have the most control over now. I just can't imagine anything other than physical media in the future that would allow me to support the companies making the content without giving them full control over that content. I'm not saying it's impossible that an alternative will exist in the future, but right now only physical media is like that.

I don't know if it's just buying fatigue or what, but I used to love buying movies and tv show sets that I liked. I would be out to Best Buy or Frys or wherever all the time buying up discs and paying attention to sales ads and releases.

Now I barely buy stuff, unless I really love the film and feel like its the type of movie I want to watch fairly often in the best quality. And that isn't that often. Even most films I enjoy now I figure I can catch them again sometime down the line if they show up on Netflix. I guess a lot of other people are doing the same thing which is why physical media isn't what it used to be.
That’s the way I am. Pre-2008, I was buying movies all the time. Now, I might buy 10-15 a year, if that. Although back in the day, a majority of the movies I bought, I did so because I saw the movie at some point and kinda, sorta liked it, so when I saw it in Suncoast or fye I thought, why not? Of course, this caused me to end up with a bunch of crap I had no feelings toward or intention to revisit, which I gradually dumped later. I just don’t find that many movies now that I feel I need to own or even revisit. Even if I really like a movie or TV show, that’s not a guarantee I want to revisit or own it.

I don’t think I hit any buying fatigue. I stopped in 2008 because I started college and didn’t have any money. After I finished college, I found my attitude toward movies gradually began cooling off. It was around the end of 2012 and beginning of 2013 that I realized I had no interest in revisiting most of what I owned and could live with watching a movie once or maybe twice. It may be odd hearing that from a film buff, but even during that first decade of collecting, I hardly ever revisited films I bought. I think I had more fun discovering and talking about the films than I did actually watching them.

Like you, I now only purchase movies I have feelings toward or know I will rewatch. I may not purchase a lot, but when I do, it’s stuff that counts.

Yup.
I bought any movie on DVD that had a cool scene:
"Oh that was cool! I'm buying the DVD!" Or,
"The movie was just ok, but that scene was wild! I'll buy the DVD"
Guess what? I never watched the movie again!

People get excited about the thought of collecting, and then, ya start buying just for collecting sake!
Then ya have to spend time listing and selling all those movies ya never should have bought. Ugh.

When camcorder's were new and all the rage, people video'd everything; baseball games, playing at the park, a school performance, hoops in the court....etc You'd play it back when you get home, but..
..Guess what!? You NEVER watched them again! That's it! Done!

It's like holding your stupid phone up at a Maroon Five or Bruno Mars concert; Do you really think you're ever going to watch that? No, you're never going to watch that.

Only buy the movies you love, as you said, the movies that count.

Why does it always have to be streaming or physical? One or the other?
Why can't they coexist? Isn't that happening right now?

Also here are few things that are still around:

Vinyl, newspapers, land lines, magazines, CDs, dial up, books, and probably a thousand other similar things.

At this time I will go check all my many existing preorders due to arrive in the next 2-3 months.

I'm sticking with physical! I'm sticking with physical!

You can just imagine me jumping up and down like Kevin Mcallister on the landing in Home Alone saying that.

Seriously though. UHD just got released. Now whether or not it will have longevity is anyone's guess, but physical media is nowhere near death at this time and my guess is it won't be for freaking decades. Chill ya'll. I use digital copies on Vudu for on the go stuff. I usually will download a few movies to my iPad and take them to work so I can watch them while working. I work night shift alone and this is a very nice way of keeping myself from going nuts with the quiet. Though I do like the quiet sometimes, but too much is too much.

Edit: Here ya go.
That's me. Just take out the "I'm living alone" and put in the above bold phrase.

I just wish most of my purchases come with UV codes so that I can give them away. I am closing in on 300 Blu rays but I have only received about 30 codes. I tend to collect what I love and will see so its not too bad. Very few blind buys and sometimes I add below par sequels and so on to complete the collection, reason I stick to box sets.

Love the PQ and AQ offered by a properly authored Blu ray and I haven't looked back. On the down side it makes it a bit hard to watch a dvd these days.

Physical media is the only thing that's keeping the movie industry in it's place. I keep making mention that the whole idea with digital downloads is for Hollywood to make their comeback win on their scummy divx war of theirs for the sake of controlling all media with an iron fist and nothing else.

Everyone is different man. I actually DO watch them again, for one thing. Secondly it is about collecting, building a library of a genre or era you really love so that everything in that category is available to you at any time, without rental cost or waiting for streaming services to license it. I love certain genres and eras so much (crime, action, sci-fi and monster stuff, mostly from the 70's-90's) that I want to have a library of them. I want to be able to see them anytime, in top quality, and I DO watch them, so it works out.

Other people might not be as into doing that, and that's totally cool. If you only watched your absolute favorites then that is what makes sense for to own. I get it. However others will be different. And even many collector's like me won't care about quality or commentaries as much, and will collect digital licenses. That's fine too. Some are collecting packaging as much as movies, and if that works them then have it, even if it baffles me.

Everyone's different and that's what makes the world go around.

I love what he says and agree with it completely.

But the fact is that us old-timers won't have much of a choice once physical media becomes a dead technology.

...at some point they'll stop manufacturing blu-ray players.

...they'll stop releasing new films on blu-ray or any kind of disc.

...new televisions won't even have input jacks for blu-ray players.

And then it's over.

Are you buying mostly catalog titles? Because practically every new movie I've bought for a while has come with a digital copy.

I hardly buy anything anymore. In fact, the only new movies I get these days are actually old DVDs I find at yard sales of movies I have never seen. I feel like I've seen just about every movie under the sun and have no desire to collect anymore.

I don't even know why I visit Blu-ray.com so often. Nothing else to do I guess.
