Neither ownership method is fool proof, that's for sure. The chances of iTunes going away someday and taking your purchases with it are likely no greater than the chance of a fire or tornado destroying your collection.
I think it honestly comes down to some people caring about the quality difference and others not. Some people caring about asking the company permission on new hardware and others not. Some people caring about supplements and others not. Some people caring about packaging and others not. Neither is right or wrong, it just depends on what you care about. Streaming will easily win the mainstream because the vast majority of consumers care about none of that crap and choose ease of use and convenience every time. |

Let us just use WB's "Tom and Jerry Golden Collection" as an example.
They intially stated that all cartoons were to be released as they were originally intended, in 3 volumes. They go ahead with the first release and then simply abandon the project. All those who purchased the first volume, now has no way of completing the collection, simply because WB holds the rights to them (I do wish MGM didn't go bankrupt, they might have given it the recognition it deserves). End of the day you can see what a studio is capable of when it has complete leverage and control over anything. If this is the case for blu rays imagine what would happen with digital downloads. At least with physical media, purchasing the stuff will end any further involvement with the studios but with digital downloads they will always have complete control. While problems do exist with physical media (like mentioned above) at least ownership means real ownership. I am yet to get a single scratched or damaged disc. Unless you don't take care of your stuff very well, disc rot is not something that will happen in the near future. Besides there is also the option of replacing them. Unfortunately the digital options can't easily be replaced should something go wrong. |

I just don't see UHD taking off. It's going to be even more niche, I think. |

I myself will be getting into UHD within a year or two. I might do so a lot earlier if they include box sets with normal blu rays. |

![]() Hey, ya know what I see here? I see that people like different things, different ways... Think of shopping at a grocery store; Nobody shops, let alone eats the same way. So this poll tells me that we live in a multi-format world, meaning physical and streaming will coexist. Plus , "watching" movies is different than "buying" movies. I rent movies via VOD, and buy blu-ray's of movies I like. |

![]() I don't yet own a UHD TV (or UHD player), but regardless I'd buy the UHD version of Star Wars if it ever comes out; only if it's the original unaltered theatrical versions. |

If UHD blurays take off I would be really surprised, considering the size of screen you need for it. I dunno, at this point im not getting into it at all. The vast majority I just don't see getting into it at all, you can only go so far, it's a movie, a picture, owning the film for itself. But hey I could be wrong, I heard titles aren't going to be that big on the format anyways so very niche in my opinion but we shall see

As long as you store your media in a cool, dry place they should last for a very long time. Some of these stories I hear, I have to wonder if folks are storing their collections underwater or on the roof to get a nice tan. ![]() |

But I don't know the lifespan of a Blu-ray. I know in 1989, when CD-R's were $50 a pop, we'd use them as source masters for our cassette duplication and CD replication. I had a band then, and put my music on a CD-R in 1989... and that CD-R still plays today, twenty seven years later. |
