I've given up even trying to explain my reasons for collecting blus. Last week in a small "personal"'meeting at work, with 2 of my bigger bosses, streaming and movies came up and of course feeling proud, I had to flap my lips and bring up my collection. They ALL looked at me like I was psychotic for collecting physical media, while putting up with comments like "My God, you own how many movies?" Or "what's the point"? They all went on to say, literally, there's no difference with streaming for quality because I've seen both. You're crazy and you don't know what your talking about. Keep in mind, these were my bosses who just so happen to be Aholes on top of it. I lost count of how many bite marks I had on my bottom lip because I was chomping at the bit. I normally couldn't care less what anyone says, but the sure smugness and arrogance they displayed pissed me off to no end.
If you're not into blus or not part of our small little niche clan here on BR.com, people in general have no clue or think you're crazy for collecting or not streaming. According to the masses, there's absolutely no difference!

We're part of a dying breed but physical media and collectors like us will survive. But I believe it'll be at a price. Physical media will never completely go away, but it will get harder to acquire titles (even blockbusters) more and more as time passes and we'll pay for it.

Oh yeah. I'm a teacher and discuss these things relatively often with college age people. They all are baffled at the concept of owning a movie in general, let alone owning it on a disc. They basically all check Netflix and watch whatever jumps out. If there's something specific they want to see and Netflix doesn't have it then they torrent it. I don't think any of them even pay for rentals.

There's a reason every studio/company is focused on subscription services as the future.

Let's put this in perspective here-- the ONLY time it was popular and mainstream to own collections of movies and shows was during the peak of the DVD era.

Prior to that, the majority of people rented movies from the video store or watched movies when aired on television (ugh, edited movies with commercial breaks, remember that?) I myself owned a small handful of movies on VHS but it was a drop in the bucket compared to how many movies I bought when I got into DVD.

This is just things returning to normal. Buyers and owners of physical media are getting closer to the old days, when you had the niche enthusiasts buying laserdiscs. Netflix and downloading is the replacement of the video store.

As a college student, I can vouch that you are absolutely correct. As a film major, I was shocked (and quite appalled, frankly) at how almost none of my peers thought twice about illegally torrenting films. Considering we're all [theoretically] going to have careers in the film industry, I was astounded at the disregard for supporting fellow filmmakers and indifference to A/V quality.

That said, everyone was astounded by my collection to admitted to the superior attributes of owning a film on blu-ray.

And I was in the minority then, too, now that you brought it up;

In the 80's, my dad and I would record movies off of the TV onto VHS tapes on our vhs recorder. We'd save and file the tapes. Nobody else I knew was doing this! Three movies recorded in "EP speed" (the tape runs slowest speed) per tape. Rrrrreally shitty quality. But we liked collecting.

We also had two VHS machines side by side (one for playing, one for recording) and religiously rented movies on VHS from the local video shop and recorded them onto blank VHS tapes, also three movies per vhs tape in EP speed.

All labeled and alphabetized.

No wonder I like blu-ray owning

Yeah, I used to own VHS to VHS recordings of a handful of movies my Uncle would give me as a kid because he owned 2 VCRs (the 2 I remember off the top of my head are Back to the Future and Batman).

Actually, it was pretty much the old timey version of torrenting. Recording VHS off of other tapes or HBO or whatever. You own the movie basically for free but you take a hit in quality.

Sometimes you gotta make your own custom discs which are just the movie. I've been doing this more often lately. This counts for titles which aren't on Blu-ray anywhere on the planet or in very mediocre quality from certain companies. Better to have alternatives compared to nothing at all.

My Grandma did this for the majority of us Grandchildren back in the 1980's and a better part of the 1990's. Even remember she put three James Bond movies on one tape in order for the titles which were out. Guess it was my first experience of the James Bond films in order albiet in Pan & Scan.

The reason they say collecting Blu-ray is different than, say, collecting lil' silver teaspoons, is because they're collecting something non tech based. It's just things to look at. Whether it's 1939, 2017, or 2134, the lil silver spoons are just to be admired from afar.

We're collecting something that we're using with today's tech, which functions right now... etc But according to them, this thing we're collecting won't be "the way" to enjoy said thing in years to come. So it's a "waste of money"

I'll be watching my Blu-Rays for the next 20 years, if I live that long. I don't see UHD Blu-Ray making a dramatic difference so 1080 Blu-Ray is the last physical media I buy. I'll never buy a digital movie that I can only access on some company"s servers. Blu-Ray is it for me.

No, the studios and the retailers are destroying physical media adoption. The idiots in Hollywood and the stores still have far more DVDs for sale than Blu-Rays. It's shameful that DVDs are still being sold. It's shameful how there are so few Blu-Rays in stores. I buy all my favorite Blu-Rays because I believe many or most will never make it to UHD, a format that I don't think will succeed.
