Here are two lil Boltz racks, in my office, holding solely DVDs

If you ask me, that just doesn't fit the look of our movie/living room. Too industrial

Thanks for the responses chaps. I was a bit hesitant to reply to those in case I was dragging things a little off topic. I've only been following this particular topic for the past 10 pages or so!

In the interest of space saving, I've recently transferred the majority of my DVDs to slips and stored the boxes in the attic, but just can't bring myself to do the same to my blus. I'm constantly torn between the "not enough space" problem and my "but I love to show off my collection" problem

Back on topic, I'd say that Blu is probably going to be the end of the road for me as far as movies and physical media are concerned. When I look back at how many times I've bought certain titles (multiple times on VHS and DVD, then bluray), I really start to wonder about my sanity.

But then I've done exactly the same thing with movie soundtracks........

I owned 2 of these for the better part of 20 years or more. Kept them stacked making for one big tower. They were the ones made for audio cd's though. Sort of sad I got rid of them.

I'm at a point where I'm going to look into building my own storage units, since I can't find anything on the market that appeals to me. What I want to do is build stackable units/shelves, with each unit holding maybe 50 Blu-rays. That way I can interchange them ... move them around wherever I can find a space that allows for it, hopefully tastefully.
There are simple $40 shelves on Amazon I get that hold a few hundred a piece. I have three of them now, plus a smaller shelf that holds all my TV series. They're cheap, but they work fine. I have a media room though, so taking up a wall with shelves is no big deal. They're too big for a living room probably.

Thanks for the info.

About 450 of my Blu-rays (or so) are displayed on a couple sets of living room shelves that work very nicely with the way the room is arranged. The remainder of them are on shelves in my bedroom. When friends come over, their eyes bug out and jaws drop at how many movies I own ... and they only see the ones in my living room, which is roughly half of them. I'm wrestling with whether I should should replace my current shelves with bigger shelves or go a different route by building my own smaller (and sturdier) stackable shelves (units), so that I can easily move them around (like in cases of moving furniture around or even the possibility of moving to another house).

So I found that I had to make a list to keep track of what titles I had ripped to hard drives for backup purposes. Here is the list so far: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1...it?usp=sharing

I need at least 3 more 8 TB drives.

I don't know. I'm obviously old school, but it just still feels like more of an event when I grab a disc and put it in a player, vs, when I watch something OnDemand or streamed through Netflix or Amazon.
Plus, to me, the thought of backing up all my blu's is definitely wise, but, then again, that's a lot of time and space. And in my experience, I'll never watch em that way.

Think about all those mobile phone videos people shoot. Ninety nine percent of folks never watch em again, and they're rrrrrright there in their hand! Taking up storage space on their device.

I wouldn't count on those drives lasting that long, tbh.

I recently moved all my hard drives to my work computer along with my 10 port USB hub. Whenever I have down time or am working late I can watch any of these films that I have ripped. My monitor is not quite 1080p, but it's close and it's better than sitting here playing solitaire.

The trick is to take care of them. I have had the smaller drives for nearly a decade and they still run like a champ. They are in a climate controlled area and I clean the dust off them every couple months to make sure they don't overheat.

So what's wrong with playing solitaire?
[Show spoiler](Just kidding. lol. ... FWIW, I play it all the time.)

Hard drives are unpredictable at how long they can last no matter if you clean them or not. If one of those breaks, how many movies are you losing all at once ? I know you still have all the BD's, but it's a lot of work to re-rip them.

You can't sell catalog titles and people can't buy them if stores won't stock them. It goes that way too.

I've been listening to this "physical media is dead" cry for something like 10 years. It still hasn't happened, and it will never happen. Even younger people today are intrigued my vinyl records, of all things. So not everyone is sold on not having tangible physical media.

If hard drives are so unpredictable, they should name them after women, like Hurricanes!

"But eiknarf, people were offended by that, so now they name hurricanes after both girls AND boys"

I know. Just trying to get ready for hurricane Matthew.

I love blu-ray

Not really. I have two BD PC drives and it doesn't take but about 30-40 minutes to rip a ~2 hour film. Also, today's hard drives are much more reliable than the hard drives of a decade ago.

30-40 minutes but how many films are on each drive ? They are more reliable, but I've been working in IT for 20 years now and still see drives crash randomly for no apparent reason whether new or not.

Well, I'd love to replace them with flash drives since they have no moving parts making them more reliable. The problem is that the prices are insane once you get close to a 1 TB.

Yeah, maybe it's a little too pessimistic to fall for the same old "hard drives are unreliable" if you're ready to invest in the newest state of the art hard drive. You can't really know how many years a brand new design and build will last, because obviously it's brand new. And the "hard drives are unreliable" always refers to the hard drives of the previous generation which might not have been built as well and sturdy. Longevity is one of the, if not the most sought after feature among hard drive buyers, so I am certain that hard drive manufacturers are really trying to make a name for themselves by having the most long lasting hard drives.

But the safest thing to do is to always have your data on two hard drives and immediately replace one should it fail and then copy the data from the other hard drive to a new one. Because the odds of both hard drives breaking down within a couple of days are extremely low.

I'd assume a lot of people who rip films onto hard drives also have a back up drive? It would be insane not to.

I can't really talk about SSD's in all certainty since we don't have any in our environment at work, so I don't have much experience.
