All the TV ads for the 2016 version of "Ghostbusters" only mention the blu-ray release; no mention of DVD at all. First time I've seen that.

I've seen it with several major releases over the last few years. I have seen many commercials that say something like, "Own it Tuesday on Blu-ray and Digital HD."

Yeah. Star Trek Beyond has an ad running now where they make a huge deal you can "get it a month before blu-ray!"

I was just coming here to post this.

Its 15 seconds long. Not once but TWICE, the announcer says "Own it today on digital 4 weeks before Blu-ray!" Not only that but it is written on the screen as well.

If that doesn't say "**** you physical media," I don't know what does.

How about "exclusive i-tunes commentary"?

Yeah "blu-ray and digital" has become the new phrasing over the old "DVD and blu-ray."

However, I did see a TV commercial yesterday for Ghostbusters that just said DVD. Thought it was odd.

Also Sony emailed me that Hunt for the Wilderpeople was now on DVD a few weeks ago with no mention of it already being on digital. That's a bit different though since the blu-ray of that still isn't out for a few more weeks.

They're hoping that they can get suckers to buy it digitally first, then again on Blu later. I've seen people here do that with other films, so it must be a good strategy.

I have seen other people here do that as well, which is completely pointless since you get a DC when you buy the BD for most new releases.

It would make sense if you could rent the movie digitally 1 month before Blu-ray and then decide if you want to buy it later on disc. But there's no revenue for the majors that way....

Makes me want to throw up.

Also, in the U.K own it digitally means iTunes or Amazon. We don't have a good UV storefront here.

The ones I have seen post about doing that are clearly doing it because they can't wait 2-4 more weeks to see the movie. Which I think is insane, but it's their money.

If they are going to waste it anyway they might as well send it to us.

speaking of physical media, where Blu-ray.com's weekly, "Coming to Blu-ray this week" news article? It's almost 2pm EST, and I'm pretty used to seeing it by 10am

I'll be renting the Blu-ray from Netflix or Redbox and I don't care how long I have to wait. They can take their "own it on digital 4 weeks before Blu-ray" and shove it up their <insert expletive here>. I have plenty of things I can do with my life in the meantime. I don't need to see this on or prior to the street date and have no plans to purchase it on Blu-ray until their exclusive i-Tunes commentary track is included.

Well, I did something I've never done before. I purchased a movie through streaming vs. physical because the Director's Cut of JADE isn't available on BD. It wasn't the best PQ wise but a noticeable improvement over the DVD I own. If anyone is a fan of the film, I highly recommend giving it a shot. I thought it was a better movie. The ending scene being removed completely from the theatrical. Overall difference is about 10 extra minutes give or take. Instances like these where a physical copy of a movie aren't available is where streaming has the only advantage. IMO.

So, I decided to see how true the "They have all of that on Netflix anyway" argument is. I took the top 10 highest grossing domestic films of 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, and 2016 and decided to see how many were on Netflix*. So bear in mind, that's seventy films. And not any niche indie movies either, we're talking Star Wars, Harry Potter, Transformers, etc. So, of all those seventy films, how many were on Netflix? Two. Zootopia (2016) and Minions (2015). This isn't a professional poll or anything, just something to show that not only does Netflix not have tiny, low-budget movies, they don't have blockbusters either.

*I used the U.S.'s Netflix since the highest grossing films were domestic anyway.

Amazon Instant Video is better than Netflix for movies

Blu ray all the way and I hope to God it doesn't die. Unfortunately I've had to purchase some movies from amazon instant video due to not knowing when or if they will ever get a blu ray release. Very frustrating. Blu ray is the best media available for film. Death to streaming and instant video! Long live blu ray!
