Yeah, I grew up with UHF/VHF TV over an antenna, and VHS tapes. Adjusting the antennas to get a "watchable" image on rainy days. Commercials, "time-compressed" and "edited for content" announcements. VHS tapes all chewed up from multiple rentals. Tracking issues that the player may or may not compensate for. Plus the lousy transfers they all had and the horrible atrocity known as 4:3 pan-and-scan.

Modern TVs and home entertainment systems aren't perfect, and home video releases can still have their issues, but this is one heck of a time to be a film fan. I'll take this over UHF and VHS rentals any day.

Again, you guys are stating what the present is like without seeing the dangers in the future. A healthy future is essential if we are all to be enjoying films 10,20 years from now.

Not to mention bonus features that can enhance the feature and add additional value.

Personally, I own a 55" UHD 3D TV with a 7.1 surround system. I have a nice collection of vintage 1950's 3D films in true 3D that look astounding on my passive 3D TV, with many more 50's 3D films on the way. We are seeing amazing catalog titles get 4k remastering and Lionsgate has just created a new Vestron blu-ray label for their catalog horror tiles. There's a huge used market out there. And a cheap region-free player literally opens up a whole world of films and alternate releases for us to choose from. Plus all-you-can-eat streaming services that deliver 1080p and 4k HDR content, filling in the gap where video rental stores used to dominate.

Heck, I just bought Buck Rogers in the 25th Century on blu-ray a couple months ago! On blu-ray! The full series!

Yeah, awful times to be a home cinema fanatic.
With trends going the opposite way with our next generation. The have to collide at some point.

Of course I'm here for discussion but it's hard not to take a defensive stance when people post stupid gifs that aren't remotely funny.

If I didn't believe what I say, do you honestly think I would expose myself to that?

Most people are exhausted after a full day's work and look forward to coming home and unwinding if possible. For millions of people, that means relaxing in front of the TV and watching their favorite shows. Do you honestly think people are going to give up their TVs and switch to staring at their tiny phones all evening to watch their shows? I guess the whole family is going to huddle around the phone? Just because phones are popular with teenagers doesn't mean adults don't want to relax in front of their TV and unwind at night. TVs still sell quite well last time I was in Best Buy or Wal-Mart.
I wouldn't completely discount the idea. Stuff changes from generation to generation. Right now, there is a whole generation of kids who live on their smart phones. I don't think it's entirely out of line to think they wouldn't be open to consuming all of their home video and television on phones and tablets.

Personally I am not a fan of this idea at all, as staring at screens for extended periods of time jacks up my eyes. I can't really watch anything longer than a music video on my iPad.

Apologies for that by the way. It was rude of me. I jumped ahead with my eagerness to share the article.

Presumably, if it gets to the point that people are abandoning home internet for mobile internet, then it will be easy to send content from your mobile device to your tv.

Or we could see a resurgence in discs.

I don't see how it would be easy though. Especially with data plans for mobile. also, it isn't going to be 4K is it?

I can somewhat agree with the gloom and doom theory (due to where we were and where we're going) but it won't be for 20+ years or so. I also believe the "majority" of home entertainment for Joe average, in one shape form or another, could be on a tablet or phone. The key word is majority. I don't for one second believe that will be the only means to view media. There's always going to be a niche market (for enthusiasts like us) for physical media with imagines presented on some type of at home cinema big screen or a "norm" 120" flatscreen monitor.
This is all nothing more then opinion with no facts to back up anything I'm saying.

Ok, let's take that further. Let's say disc doesn't survive 20 years? Presuming mobile contracts with associated data restrictions are in place for a mobile first world for the majority. Like a poster above suggests, do they find a way to cast to the big screen (considering data restrictions) or is it curtains for film on a tv.

Now now, it'll never be "curtains for you Rocky"
That will never happen. Even though today's kids and young adults are the generation that predicates what future generations evolve in to, I can't see it getting to the point of the Hunger Games philosophy.
Discs will last 20 years and it'll never be at a point where physical media will disappear for purchase now or into the 22nd century.
Bud, I'm sticking up for you somewhat in "theory" but don't go overboard.

You're saying that to the person who insists that TVs, broadband internet for the home, and the ability to watch a movie or TV show at normal speed are all endangered and about to go the way of the dodo. We passed "overboard" about five exits ago...

Frankly, I can't believe you haven't been banned. Constantly repeating the same thing over and over and starting new threads about the same old thing. Trolling 101. Even if you believe it, you're still at troll. DalekBuster523 got the boot 3 times, and you've never been flagged? C'mon mods! Let's get'r'done!

Yikes,
If I'd known that, I wouldn't have stirred the pot.
I find the entire discussion interesting but if it's to the point of trolling?...not my intent to encourage it further. Anyway..... Overall a good thread.
Now on to me stating the reasons why physical media will die and all media will only be on a smartphone in 6 months.

My experience with students and my wife's friends and such tells me people don't watch stuff on their phones at home, but they DO watch stuff on their tablets. Teens and wives watching stuff on their tablets while dad/husband watches sports or movies on the TV seems to be a super common setup. Those teens might grow up to keep watching their tablets, who knows. Saves you a lot of money.

Honestly the future is going to be diverse. Movies, shows, youtube. TVs, tablets, phones. Streaming subs, rentals, niche collector discs. Soundbars, headphones, surround systems. It's a diverse world and people have diverse tastes. We're not going to see a dominating format like DVD again, but I wish you guys would stop seeing anything less than that as an end of time crisis.

Frankly, I think it is disgusting trying to get people banned. I have zero intention of hurting anyone's feelings and the people that know me know I mean no harm. I am entitled to a opinion. If you are going to start banning people for repeating the same thing half this board would be banned. In fact, your posts have been nothing but disrespectful to me, IMO, from day one, so practice what you preach. Also, don't bring other forum users names into this argument.
If you don't like it, don't post, simples.
