It's just under $500 and is available now at Best Buy with a Magnolia section. [EDIT] Last edited by FilmFreakosaurus; 10-19-2018 at 09:12 PM. |

Anyway, the TV does the tone-mapping, so I really think most people don't need these expensive players people recommend. I know a lot of home theater enthusiasts want the best and such, but if you've got a TV that doesn't need help with HDR then really all you need is a player that outputs a direct signal without any issues. The Sony players do that well, as do some other cheaper players. |

It does seem like the Panasonics are the way to go if you're converting to SDR or using picture modes. |

I was in Walmart today and for the very first time every I saw the Sony UBP-X700 for around $199. This is the first time my local Walmart had a Sony 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player on the shelf. Before it was only a Samsung and Philips 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray players to choose from.

I did not purchase a Sony UBP-X700 since I am happy with my OPPO UDP-203. However a couple of family members last year I gave the Sony UBP-X800 as gifts. The UBP-X800 plays DVD-Audio discs and the only real advantage of the Sony UDP-X700 is the Dolby Vision HDR feature. The OPPO UDP-203 does Dolby Vision HDR also. When it comes time to replace the flat panels with Dolby Vision HDR models then a Sony or other Blu-ray player with Dolby Vision HDR would be a advantage. There is a lot of flat panels that lack HDR10+ and only have HDR10 and Dolby Vision HDR. More and more flat panels should in theory be released that has all the HDR formats including HDR10+, which the new Panasonic Blu-ray players support. Yes my Sony Z9D is able to display. Which is why I went w/the x700 since the oppos are no longer available at non scalper prices. I didn’t see the sense in purchasing a 4K tv w/the ability to display hdr, dv, etc unless I bought a player to utilize those features. I was just adding that I’ve had zero playback issues w/the 700 if anyone is on the fence about buying. I love it so far.

The Panny UB820 seems like it’d be the strongest overall player as far as disc compatibility and output quality and all that… and the Dolby Vision selection can be automatic, so no fussing around. But do I NEED that? My Z9F handles tone mapping really well… but I don’t know, I also wouldn’t mind having a player that may be better at playing discs overall than the Sony. But is that improvement going to be worth a few hundred extra dollars? Been going back and forth on this for the last couple of weeks and still haven’t felt comfortable enough pulling the trigger. |

I saw the x700 the other day at my local BB and after looking at it I was so glad I got the x800. Talk about a step down in build quality between the two machines. Wow! What the hell was Sony thinking? Yes the x700 has Dolby Vision but coming from someone like me who dont give a crap about Dolby Vision this is disappointment. Their x700 has the same build quality as Sony's regular Blu ray players so why they went the route they did surprises me. To some I know build quality dont mean much but to me it does. If I didnt have the x800 I would have went with Oppo but the x800 won me over. But if I were in the market for a 4K Blu ray player the Sony x700 would not be on my list. Just sayin.

The build quality certainly concerns me… but at the same time, I ask myself, “Does it really make a difference?” I keep my components well apart on my home entertainment stand. I don’t stack anything. Will the cheaper build really be something I’ll care about in practice? Probably not. I LIKE solid components for sure, but if I can get this thing for $105 with those coupons as opposed to the $405 I’d spend on the Panny… it’s mighty tempting to just roll with the X700.
