I would probably go with the very latest Panasonic 4k player that will support all flavors of HDR, though it is a bit more expensive than some of the other choices. It's not as cheaply built.

I would recommend an Oppo 203 in a heartbeat, but since they are no longer being made...
That's interesting news on my TV-- I thought it just missed having anything above the original HDR...

Can you tell me what model the Panasonic player is? and is it under $500?

I second the Panasonic for your set up. DP-UB820 is the model.

Panasonic DP-UB820-K

It's just under $500 and is available now at Best Buy with a Magnolia section. [EDIT]

I haven't paid much attention, but wasn't the KS8000 supposed to get an HDR 10+ update? That's what I read when HDR 10+ was announced.

Anyway, the TV does the tone-mapping, so I really think most people don't need these expensive players people recommend. I know a lot of home theater enthusiasts want the best and such, but if you've got a TV that doesn't need help with HDR then really all you need is a player that outputs a direct signal without any issues. The Sony players do that well, as do some other cheaper players.

All the 2016 models were supposed to get it, but Samsung has been shady about many things over the last couple of years, including and especially HDR10+. Last year when it was announced that Amazon had launched HDR10+, Samsung only mentioned the 2017 models as being compatible. Then earlier this year, when the HDR10+ certification launched, Samsung only mentioned the 2018 models as being "HDR10+ certified," with absolutely no mention of the 2017 models. There were some rumblings before the official launch that the 2016 models would be left behind, and it looks like that may be the case, although no one with a 2016-2018 can confirm if their sets support it, since Samsung, as well as Amazon (who is the only HDR10+ provider at the moment) have refused to implement an HDR10+ notification.

that's what I remember reading as well--- my TV has done updates of course but I don't really know if my TV has HDR 10 or not at this point? How would I be able to know or confirm that this update was done?

The Panasonic and Oppo players had better build quality. That does stand for something. The internal tone mapping in the Pannies is supposed to be excellent.

Sure, but my point is if you have a television that has excellent HDR and tone-mapping already then you're not going to use those modes anyway. You're just going to output the disc image untainted to the television, so all you need is a player that does that.

It does seem like the Panasonics are the way to go if you're converting to SDR or using picture modes.

Well, it depends on the display. If you havr entry level HDR TV, you will need this player. The same goes if you use projector.

I was in Walmart today and for the very first time every I saw the Sony UBP-X700 for around $199. This is the first time my local Walmart had a Sony 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player on the shelf. Before it was only a Samsung and Philips 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray players to choose from.

I got mine at that price too. I’m hoping to add another one for cheaper on Black Friday when I eventually replace my hdtv. I’m extremely happy w/it. I haven’t had one single issue w/it freezing. I don’t use it to stream as I use the tv’s internal apps for that.

I did not purchase a Sony UBP-X700 since I am happy with my OPPO UDP-203. However a couple of family members last year I gave the Sony UBP-X800 as gifts. The UBP-X800 plays DVD-Audio discs and the only real advantage of the Sony UDP-X700 is the Dolby Vision HDR feature. The OPPO UDP-203 does Dolby Vision HDR also. When it comes time to replace the flat panels with Dolby Vision HDR models then a Sony or other Blu-ray player with Dolby Vision HDR would be a advantage.

There is a lot of flat panels that lack HDR10+ and only have HDR10 and Dolby Vision HDR. More and more flat panels should in theory be released that has all the HDR formats including HDR10+, which the new Panasonic Blu-ray players support.

Yes my Sony Z9D is able to display. Which is why I went w/the x700 since the oppos are no longer available at non scalper prices. I didn’t see the sense in purchasing a 4K tv w/the ability to display hdr, dv, etc unless I bought a player to utilize those features. I was just adding that I’ve had zero playback issues w/the 700 if anyone is on the fence about buying. I love it so far.

I had a similar post like this on the AVS forum awhile back and about got banned. Those mods over there are a joke.

I’m in a bit of a predicament myself. I want a Dolby Vision capable player to match my Z9F… and yeah, the Sony x700 is $200… it’d be $105 for me actually, because I have $95 in Reward Zone coupons to burn. For that price, I find it hard to wave that particular player off. I really don’t like how the X700 seems to make people switch the Dolby Vision setting on and off depending on the disc though, but it’s a small concession to make for the price I guess. I also don’t like how the build seems cheaper than the X800. I’ve also had an occasional hiccup playing discs on X800, and would be afraid of getting more of the same on X700. But the X800 has been strong overall though so… eh.

The Panny UB820 seems like it’d be the strongest overall player as far as disc compatibility and output quality and all that… and the Dolby Vision selection can be automatic, so no fussing around. But do I NEED that? My Z9F handles tone mapping really well… but I don’t know, I also wouldn’t mind having a player that may be better at playing discs overall than the Sony. But is that improvement going to be worth a few hundred extra dollars? Been going back and forth on this for the last couple of weeks and still haven’t felt comfortable enough pulling the trigger.

I saw the x700 the other day at my local BB and after looking at it I was so glad I got the x800. Talk about a step down in build quality between the two machines. Wow! What the hell was Sony thinking? Yes the x700 has Dolby Vision but coming from someone like me who dont give a crap about Dolby Vision this is disappointment. Their x700 has the same build quality as Sony's regular Blu ray players so why they went the route they did surprises me. To some I know build quality dont mean much but to me it does. If I didnt have the x800 I would have went with Oppo but the x800 won me over. But if I were in the market for a 4K Blu ray player the Sony x700 would not be on my list. Just sayin.

The build quality certainly concerns me… but at the same time, I ask myself, “Does it really make a difference?” I keep my components well apart on my home entertainment stand. I don’t stack anything. Will the cheaper build really be something I’ll care about in practice? Probably not. I LIKE solid components for sure, but if I can get this thing for $105 with those coupons as opposed to the $405 I’d spend on the Panny… it’s mighty tempting to just roll with the X700.

"Build quality" concerns are laughable... What are you people doing with your players, useing them for footballs?
