But the point is that most studios appear to be grading on Dolby's tech to begin with, so if there's any monetary concern here it's already overcome its first big hurdle.

Oct 16th, 2017 - Deluxe Helps Answer Growing Demand for 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray™ Content with Dolby Vision Approved Authoring Services

Quote:
Deluxe Entertainment Services Group (Deluxe) delighted cinephiles today with the announcement that its compression and authoring services are now Dolby Vision approved, which will rapidly facilitate the release of more high-quality 4K UHD Blu-ray content into the market. Deluxe has already delivered more than 100 4K UHD Blu-ray SKUs in high dynamic range (HDR) – more titles than any other industry provider. With this announcement, Deluxe's end-to-end compression and authoring workflow, including its own proprietary toolset for dynamic range and color space conversion, and that of partners Scenarist and Ateme, is now approved by Dolby to support Dolby Vision HDR in addition to HDR10 for the 4K UHD Blu-ray Disc format.

Oh, my cursory read was that studios were mastering for HDR 10 first and then maybe-shmaybe putting more money into tuning Dolby Vision. You're saying it's the opposite of that?

Many HDR discs from certain studios thus far have been mastered with 4000 nit static metadata (and we're told that others are mastering to 4000 but then downconverting to 1000), data that is derived from the display that's being used to master it. You know what studio monitors hit 4000 nits? There's only one AFAIK: the Dolby Pulsar.

In other words: most studios (Warners, Sony, Lionsgate, Universal, possibly Disney and Paramount too) have been mastering their HDR10 wares using Dolby's tech, and it's really no coincidence that most of those outfits have had Dolby Vision available on 4K streaming for a while now, well before the first DV discs started appearing. Disney are also doing the same, releasing HDR10 on disc but DV on streaming. Get the picture? They're grading in DV and downconverting the HDR10 from that, and have been since pretty much the start aside from Fox (though even they do Dolby Vision for certain theatrical releases of theirs).

[edit] And don't think that the above news about Deluxe is somehow contradictory, they announced they were ready for DV mastering back in 2014 (http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/beh...t-dolby-718343) and have indeed handled the authoring of many HDR10 discs. The point is that they're now approved for actually compressing and authoring Dolby Vision onto UHD disc, not an easy process thanks to the base/enhancement layer composition of DV.

Speaking of that long awaited hdr10+ Content, anyone have a paid subscription for the following website? They've got a new article about Samsung galaxy preparing it for launch.

We know that for years now. They plan to launch 8K for the 2020 Olympics.

Unless you have the room and money for a giant cinema screen or IMAX theater, 8k is absolutely not necessary for the home.

NHK was demoing 8k broadcasts at NAB, and it was not that impressive. One of the apparent killers was the gobs of compression used making any visual benefits over 4k moot.

The only upside was the immersive audio, which could be had with 4k.

If the industry would only take the time to get 4k right and nail down 12 bit HDR and Rec 2020, along with at least Blu-ray grade lossless Dolby Atmos and include much higher bitrates than they wish to currently allocate, 4k would be perfect for decades to come... if we last that long.

The fix would be of course to not use dynamic metadata aggresively and effectively run it like HDR10. That way the brightness levels won't be raised/lowered all over the place in the attempt to get a better picture, ie go back to more static like metadata.

Which brings us back to what is the point of dolby vision if the dynamic metadata is causing more harm than good.
This makes my head swim. Is there any truth to any of this?

What I took home is what he said in his closing statement, and that is that he would largely prefer to watch something in Dolby Vision than in HDR10.
The End.

It's quite simple:
Dolby Vision > HDR10

Very interesting. From that picture, it looks like it transcodes HLG to HDR10. I'm assuming it's the first device to do so. It also upconverts SDR to HDR10. But it doesn't show that it passes HLG to an HLG compatible TV.

I hope this is the first of many more devices like it.

at the meeting the working group essentially accepted the proposal by Dolby with some changes in wording
