It did indeed, it was one of the first such 'end to end' 4K restorations and I guess Sony felt it needed a refresh. As you hinted at, the negative is long gone and the previous resto made use of fine grain positives and even some prints.

Only a matter of time, the rate they're on at the moment I'd have thought this year or next. Really hope Warners has 'One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest' coming up as well.
On another note, I wonder if we'll get the original mono mix for The Shining? Has there been a mono mix released with a 4K title yet? (not just a downmix) Last edited by alexpeden2000; 03-22-2019 at 08:34 PM. |

From what I can find, it was destroyed. But considering it's Kubrick, it might also just be locked away in the estate. They also found the 2001 footage that he cut out after the premiere, though that was a salt mine, so who knows for sure at this point.

As far as anything else, no, nothing remains. Besides those snapshots you mentioned you cannot watch any other footage made for the movie that didn't make the final cut. Generally speaking you can determine what those scenes are if you listen to McDowell in interviews and even read the book, which the film is very close to. |

There is an interview with Leon and I think Malcolm might have been there too where he mentions that there are various things that haven't been released but he never mentions what those things are.
I should also mention that the black and white stills which show some of those deleted scenes actually came from Malcolm McDowell's personal collection. I'm not saying he has more or has footage but I know he does have his own personal cinema and does have his own collection of 35mm films and no doubt other film formats too. Someone mentioned the name of the cinema several pages back and yes, they did advertise the original cut of The Shining and yes it was advertised for weeks before being pulled and I think everyone agrees they were told to pull it. They would not have mentioned it being the original cut unless they knew it was and I remember reading on the IMDB forums at the time, that this particular cinema has had a reputation of having had rare cuts of films before, I think they have them stored rather than getting a print from the distributors so that leaned more weight on them actually having an original print and just having it in storage. I think there is quite a few things that still survive including the original ending. I refuse to believe that the many many boxes of film at the Kubrick estate doesn't have some odds and ends and alternate scenes just like I don't believe Warner Bros weren't allowed access to those film materials and when Kubrick had all that film developed, miles and miles of it, they never had access. Even with the original cut I don't think Warner Bros took that negative and ordered all those prints and never kept one for themselves. I think what has happened is that estate has put a stop to anything being released and it's really unfortunate because they wont even admit what is there, Leon wont admit it, I've met Malcolm but never asked him but I don't even know if Malcolm would say what is there in a 1 on 1 conversation and yet you would think with all the restorations Warner Bros have done, the amount of times archivers and researchers have been in those archives, you would think there would be at least one big Kubrick fan that would have a nosey around and see what's there but wasn't that the case with the 2001 footage? It was found and it was revealed to be there without Warner Bros consent and they basically had no choice but to come out and admit that the 19 minutes of cut footage was in their possession and in mint condition. It could be the same case with this film where those involved are keeping their mouths shut and no one has opened their mouths to let us know. It's a real sad state of affairs because enough time has passed and it's strange to think that that stuff is out there and we may never get to see it. Wasn't there meant to be 16 hours of footage Vivian shot for her documentary but the sound tapes couldn't be found? She's active on Twitter, I can't believe no one has asked her about that and why that can't be included, no doubt she will have filmed tons of deleted scenes from behind the shooting cameras. Also Jack is prone to interviews about things he likes as is Shelley Duvall and others, it would be nice to get them on camera and letting them go into detail about their experiences along with recording commentaries. |

I think they came from Malcolm's collection. There's a site dedicated to The Shining by a superfan and he has some amazing stuff on there from pages from scripts to behind the scenes pics, he's got folders full of continuity polaroids, he's spoke to so many people involved in the film who have kept things over the years and obviously bought them from them. No doubt even he has stuff that he is holding back, I'd love to look through those folders of polaroids and really read those scripts and see the different endings and the different scenes that were planned but not shot or maybe they were shot? Who knows.
I wish someone who knows would just say what's there, like with 2001, just say what's there and lets fans know one way or the other. I think Warner Bros should do that themselves and just say it once and that's it, just say what it is, either the estate is stopping you or you yourself want to honour Stanley Kubrick's wishes because there's 18 hours of Full Metal Jacket footage shot by Vivien which is confirmed to still be there with the sound tapes, we know Warner cut Eyes Wide Shut so rather than running into these issues further down the road and people start wondering why this footage doesn't show up, best to just be honest and explain you have it but tell fans why you wont release it. |

What "issues" are they? People crying about it on an internet forum? Warners are never gonna publicly say "oh, by the way we have actually got this amazing treasure trove of Kubrick stuff but you're never gonna see it" because all that will do is cause even more resentment amongst certain people that they will never get to see it.

Of course they wont which is why I would settle for what does exist which is all those hours of footage Vivian shot on the set of The Shining and Full Metal Jacket, I would happily watch them instead.

If anyone hasn't seen it, here's footage of the Elstree sound stages after the films release in 1980/Vivian Kubrick showing the 'Kubrick store room' (which also doubled as the Kitchen/where Jack was locked in the Movie), phone interview with Stanley talking about the ending of The Shining/2001 etc... Some gems in here.
