I didn’t need to call on God to forbid the trash Euro cut. Warner Bros. took care of that for 4K all on their own, bless them.

No, it's proof positive that Kubrick knew he wasn't perfect and was more than content to continue to tinker and explore the creative process to craft a leaner, more suspenseful cut of his film.

I assume that the negative for the film was conformed to the US theatrical and Kubrick finished the European cut out to an interpositive (as you can’t have two negatives containing the same camera original, keptin!), so for that reason as much as anything the new 4K transfer was the US version only. They could’ve digitally conformed it to the Euro cut for sure, but I guess they thought “meh”

I think both cuts are good for different reasons. I'll probably go back to the US more as that's what's on 4k.
I prefer the European cut to the US, the latter a little too on the nose for me, the seated skeletons a little redundant for example.

Less is more in these instances. The Director's don't always know the best version of their film as anyone who has had the misfortune to witness the Wenders' cut of Until the End of the World could attest.

Crucial character development is too on the nose for you? Also, that skeleton scene is like a minute of screen time.

Which omitted scene contains crucial character development? *If you're referring to the Barry Nelson hospital visit at the very end which virtually nobody has seen you needn't bother replying*

I'm talking about the differences between the existing European & US versions.

When I watch the European cut, I literally don't miss anything from the U.S. cut. It just flows so deftly that I just become more absorbed than I do in the U.S. cut.

Have to agree. Even if we had the International cut in 4K I'd still be watching the longer US cut. And that International cut on the old Blu-ray is barely watchable after seeing the 4K disc.

Why can't people here accept that others have different preferences? It is like kiddy time with the "my toys are better than your toys".

There is zero crucial character development missing in the Euro cut. Everything laid out in the doctor scene is revealed by Jack and Wendy themselves once the hotel starts taking over. Kubrick obviously understood this since he decided to remove the doctor scene altogether rather than just trim it like he did with other lengthy conversations in the film (for example, I love the quick edit where Danny immediately challenges Dick during the ice cream scene rather than pause to think first). Almost all of the other edits are for pacing during the hotel tour, trims to characters wandering through the hotel, removal of all TV footage in the Overlook (another clearly deliberate choice by Kubrick and not just a hack job as some allege) and reducing cutaways to Hallorann's journey to a minimum.

And FWIW, Kubrick already hacked the characters from the novel into little pieces for the American cut. That isn't surprising since he said in interviews that he didn't find King's family dynamics or focus on alcoholism terribly interesting. He did like the structure of the work however and the Euro cut maintains that structure just as well the American one. It's just that one is more leisurely whereas the other is unrelenting. And it is possible to like both: Kubrick apparently did after all.

I like both cuts equally for different reasons.

Ooh this is a toughie. Euro cut was all I’d watched of it until picking up the US laserdisc a while back, and it bored me. It seemed to meander too much, lots of time spent by the characters doing nothing. But watching it again on the 4K I fookin loved it.

Not if I was saying for all the Euro cut apologists to line up.

I think in part my preference for the US cut is fuelled by how annoyed I was when I found out the version I'd been watching for years was shortened. Also, the Euro cut seems even more like the ADHD version when you add PAL speedup. I've never seen it at the correct frame-rate, because the original Australian BD was a clone of the US disc. I was bloody well over the moon when I bought that disc, let me tell you that.

Oh, and as for the skeletons being "barely a minute", it's more like about 10 seconds, and even such a serious movie as this one still deserves that one cheesy relief shot.
