I prefer the international cut, personally.
Was the shorter Euro version any more popular?

I see page 119. And if you add those numbers together, you get 11... as in Apollo 11.

It would seem so.

Since this is page 237 ‘Dick’ is now climaxing, and we’re exactly half way through the total length of this thread.

Huh? I am not sure where this "it didn't do well" thing came from but it opened the same weekend as Empre Strikes Back and per screen beat ESB and once it opened to more screens did well and made a profit.

The reviews were mixed, the box-office was strong.

$45 million on a $19 million budget isn't exactly lighting the box office on fire. It did alright, but it had a mixed reception, as most Kubrick's do, only later to be heralded as classics.

Yep. Kubrick re-edited it for the later European release precisely because of the lukewarm reception it got Stateside…

Which led to a crappier, get-in-and-get-out-because-the-babysitter’s-charging-by-the-hour edit. Proof positive that creators need to have faith in themselves.

Queue all the UK edit defenders while I yawn at them and make fun of their high waters.

It was considered a "hit" in the U.S., but not the EXORCIST-level blockbuster both Warner Bros. and Kubrick had hoped for, and the critical reception was of course very "mixed". Kubrick had earlier turned down the offer to direct THE EXORCIST and it kind of stinged him that Friedkin's film went on to be such a phenomenon and he was hoping to surpass it.

I mean the international cut is still a 2 hour movie. Not really a get-in-and-out type of cut.

A huge part of the whole appeal of The Shining is that it's an epic horror movie. Quickening up the pace takes away that deliberate gracefulness, similar to the rubbish "directors cut" of Alien.

God forbid someone likes a different cut of a movie than you do. You like what you prefer, others will enjoy what they want to.
I think both cuts are good for different reasons. I'll probably go back to the US more as that's what's on 4k.
