I can live with the skeletons. Thankfully, the animated hedge animals were dropped from the film.

I don't understand the hate for the skeleton scene, to be honest.

It's darkly comical, which is perfectly in line with the tone of the film. One could also interpret it as the hotel revealing its inner death and decay to Wendy. The place, after all, is "soaked in blood to the core."

And Wendy is, after all, a confirmed ghost story and horror film addict.

I loved the skeleton scene. Of course Wendy gets treated to a vision that looks like a haunted house scene as opposed to everything else experienced by the family. IDK how that flies over anyone's heads.

The skeleton scene reminds me of something out of The Ruling Class. Just one more scene from the American cut that's more goofy than terrifying.

That's the one thing the book does better than the film IMO. It's one reason I'd have liked to see the scrapbook scene kept in the final cut. Then again Kubrick's take is more ambiguous which is no doubt intentional.

I have no problem figuring out how or why Hallorran gets to the Overlook in the Euro cut. Cutting the fat from his journey massively improves the pacing and tension of the back half of the film. He does materialize without introduction during the hotel tour in the Euro cut however. Kubrick cut to the bone during that stretch.

She also shares Danny's vision of blood pouring out of the elevator and is the only person to see arguably the creepiest and most random shot in the film, namely the man-dog giving someone head. Her visions aren't uniformly cliche.

F*ck, I never even caught that connection to Wendy's love of horror films and the almost cartoonish skeleton scene.

K now I like it more.

And I just laughed to myself now thinking about it.

It's unlikely if you mean that this UHD disc, or a disc with the exact same content, will have other types of packaging, be part of a Kubrick UHD box set, etc.

But it's extremely likely that this is the final physical release of The Shining, as in that they won't be releasing some other remaster, or a new encoding or a disc with new content on it. 8K physical media will almost certainly not be a thing. And even if it somehow is, releasing films shot on 35mm on that format would be entirely pointless.

Yeah, it's not like there won't be other repackagings of this disc (it being Warners and all) but an actual remastered/re-encoded version on this or any other future physical format? Nah. 4K is disc's last stand.

if you want the true version of The Shining, watch the miniseries from 1997.

Wouldn't the "true" version of The Shining be King's novel?

I see they’ve updated the disc art for this on iTunes (to the UHD) so we might see this updated way before September, and on the UK iTunes Store it has stated it’s the (extended cut). I don’t have it, but I’m hoping someone can check the quality to see if there’s any difference. I normally always pick up the discs, but WB codes are pointless to me in Canada, I normally buy WB films twice.

Well I would, but I've got something more fun planned. I'm going to go home and rub my head with a cheese grater while chewing on tin foil.

My favorite part of the steelbook is definitely the spine. I would like the steelbook better if it just had the title font on the front, without that tacky/gimmicky maze design.

It would be the mini-series. King, who was on a peak of career performance at the time, went to Hollywood and said "Listen mother****as, you gonna do my book the right way this time and here's the ****ing script from me, which you're gonna shoot at the place I used to inspire the book!" Because a mini-series renaissance was going on with the spread of cable TV, the studios were happy to sign off on doing a full-blown massive mini-series of The Shining, especially after the critical success of The Stand. Though King - and fans of his book - loves the mini-series, fans of The Shining (The Kubrick film and not the book) derided it because they felt it was a blow against Kubrick's sacred film, much like hardcore fans of Clarke's novels may not like the Kubrick film and it's sequel, or vice-versa.

I'd much rather see a streaming giant deliver another take on The Shining as a mini-series, for although the old mini-series may well be a hell of a lot closer to the book it's also a bit of a stinker.

The book isn’t that good, honestly. Thank god Kubrick did what he did with it.
