Actually, there's a second title with Disney. One that I'd forgotten. The 1994 made-for-TV version of Don't Drink the Water.

Watched The Russia House last night. Posted more in its thread but wanted to quickly report here it's a solid MGM transfer, some good detail and no processing issues. Brief moments of wobble in the frame but nothing crazy. If you find typical MGM transfers acceptable you'll like this one, it's one of the better examples.

Connery is brilliant in it.

"Mighty Aphrodite", "Celebrity", "Curse of the Jade Scorpion", "Small Time Crooks", and "Hollywood Ending" are all available from Sweden (region-free). I have 4 of the 5 and the transfers are all solid. There's a very reliable 3rd party seller on Amazon who sells them for decent prices. Since Woody doesn't do extras, there probably won't be much of a difference between those discs and an American release aside from English subs. If you're a fan of any of those films, I'd pull the trigger because it may be a while before the stateside releases.

I had been interested in this one, but then I read Ebert's review and was really turned off. Did Ebert have a point, in your opinion?

I wrote more in the movie thread, but he's not wrong really. It's a movie about people talking in various places, it has no action or tension. It's mostly a character study of Connery's character, who is fascinating, but I could see that not being enough to hold a movie together for some. If the idea of watching Connery talk to interesting people in cool places about the cold war for 2 hours doesn't appeal to you then it probably should be avoided.

Thanks, that's exactly the kind of dispassionate assessment I was looking for. I haven't been the biggest fan of Connery in the past, so this is looking like something I may have to pass on. Oh well.

They do not, but most titles you can get for $15 on sale (which are way more frequent than bi-annually) with sites that offer free shipping at fairly reasonable price points.

There are two outlets for TT. TT and SAE, neither offers free shipping. Basically they both offer $5 shipping.

So you are looking at $35 per title, and the occasional sale at $25. You would have to buy a whole bunch of titles to get it down to the $22 per title price point.

Most of the time you are looking at a pretty close to $20 price difference.

I will say that Kino's website is absurd, $8 shipping per title is a joke. Fortunately they have a bunch of places they sell their titles. Which is not the case for TT.

Just received my latest batch of TT blurays from the most recent autograph offering. This brings my total number of TT titles to 115. Wow. That seems like a lot to me, but then I take a step back and look at the titles I've accumulated and I don't feel so bad anymore.

It takes a lot of patience to watch any adaptation of a John Le Carre book. If you've seen films like "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" or "A Most Wanted Man" and enjoyed them, then you'll probably enjoy "The Russia House". I recently saw "Our Kind of Traitor" in theaters and it was unbelievably shit. It was actually the opposite of most Le Carre adaptations. It wasn't that dry, just really bad and poorly executed.

They ship 3 titles for $5 (source: http://www.twilighttimemovies.com/shipping-returns/), therefore you would have to order 3 titles to get shipping for under $2 per disc. So, 3 Twilight Time titles during a sale = $65. 3 Kino titles during a sale as you describe = $45. so I guess you were right about the $20 price difference, except that it's for three movies instead of one.

So, you're really just trying to tell us you have a lot of blu-rays.

Nothing to be confused about.

TT itself runs a sale what once a year? And the TT site only has a limited offering of movies they have put out, so the idea of someone wanting 3 of those particular titles is also lessened.

I'm not talking about absolute best case scenario where you can get a deal in a short window. Its like saying, Criterion's only cost $14. Because each year on Black Friday you can get the 50% off and stack it with a 30% off coupon.

I'd say once every other month you can get a Kino title at around $15, maybe even once a month if you do some shopping around, and you can get them for less also.

TT on Sale at SAE again a very limited occurrence apparently, shipping starts at ~$5 a title and they add on money for each extra title you purchase.

The idea that they are generally about $20 more per title is actually fairly in line with reality.

Ok, if you honestly believe that an on-line sale lasting several weeks which is widely announced weeks in advance is comprable to having to combine Black Friday in-store shopping with aggressive coupon cutting, then I think we are at conversational impasse. I would simply point out that even in your sarcastic dismissal, you can't help but subconsciously load your numbers against Twilight Time, in this case by ignoring the sales tax that you would get by purchasing in-store. Anyway, good luck with the anti-TT campaign in the only dedicated TT thread.

If you scroll back through this topic you'll find that explained every three or four pages. It's been discussed thoroughly in the last week or so.

Widely announced TT sale? You are delusional.

The amount of people that know about the B&N sale absolutely dwarfs even the number of people that know what the company Twilight Time even is.

It isn't an anti TT campaign. I've supported them with my money and will continue to do so because they release titles I'm interested in and I have the means to purchase them. But they are more expensive then most labels, the reality of that fact is clear. If I point out that fact, why would you assume my stance is anti-TT? That's a big assumption to be making.

If a different label released the movies, I'd buy them there. In their catalog, there are only a few films I think really deserve the price tag. When you look at a release like Christine which is the only release I'm aware of they sold out of by release day...well that same movie can now be purchased for $10 any day of the week (practically) using the same transfer. As a film collector of some sort that wants to enjoy and appreciate them in the best format available, I am also mindful of how much it costs to acquire more films to enjoy.

If they never did re-issues and the rights to the films released in that format were more than 3 years, I think you would have less people pointing out the price difference.
