Alright. I can wait until they begin to rate it as important. So far I'm still waiting for Samsung to get back on this.

Welcome to the forum. Sorry that you were thrown into the deep end of the pool right off the bat. But I see you are a good swimmer.

Thanks. No worries. I haven't been active on web forums for a few years now but I've done my share of debating in such places before. I may even have had an account here years ago; not sure anymore.

Anyway, I run the @UHD4k tweet feed and realized some of the stuff I post there gets discussed here. While I prefer all of you'd coe to Twitter and discuss it there I'm aware that's probably not going to happen, so I decided to drop in here : )

Sure, but the support is there, entirely independent of an official announcement.

But we might be waiting for ever! Consider that they might NEVER announce it, and meanwhile it'll work and we'll all be watching HLG broadcasts - but the diagram...?

Thanks for dropping in. Some of us (like me & others) have no social media presence, so it only happens here for us.

Looks like I was right:

One important detail that we learned is that HDR10+ can be supported over HDMI 2.0b. HDMI 2.1 is not a requirement, said Paul Williams. This opens the door to firmware updates for existing products.

Yep, metadata is just packets of information that take up a fraction of space. The only caveat is whether X HDMI chip is able to be updated via firmware so it can recognise and subsequently pass along the 10+ data.

We already can. Well, just random clips in a short loop:

Yeah, HLG has been working for a few months now.

By the way, are you the same person who said the Technicolor test stream triggers HDR, or was that someone else?

My Samsung Galaxy S8+ has an OLED screen which is has a brightness over 1000 nits. YouTube has released an update so HDR material now plays in HDR in my S8+.

We just got that phone for my wife. I'll have to play with it.

And where's your direct Samsung source for this? There's videos of Samsung saying the ocb feature is done. And Rudy over at avs has also been told by his contacts that there won't be any more upgrade boxes. I also believe that FlatpanelsHD was also told by Samsung that the ocb upgrades are finished.

The phone is stuttering and slowing down when displaying 1440pHDR. It looks like only 720pHDR works properly. Was just messing with it on my phone and an avs member said the same thing.

I was playing HDR content at 1080pHDR without any slow downs, stuttering or frame skipping.

Rudy has stated numerous times over the last few weeks that Samsung is now considering an OCB upgrade for the 2016/2017 sets if necessary, in order to enable HDR10+ over HDMI. But now with the revelation that HDMI 2.0b is all that's required, a firmware update should be enough.

I believe that there isn't a direct source, but we have the very same Rudy over at avs in this post:

They feel more testing is necessary before they can be sure that the 2017 sets will work reliably over HDMI with HDR10 Plus. This late into the model year they may just to wait for HDMI 2.1 (and all its features) for the 2018 TVs, then upgrade 2016/2017 sets with an OCB if all of the connection/interoperability issues can be resolved.

Yes, that was me. But that test channel is gone now and though its title was Technicolor HDR test or something similiar I don't really know what exactly was broadcasted there. Another channel switched between various HDR formats including HDR10 which also worked. But again, who knows what it actually was.

All these test channels change so quickly. Most of them were gone about a month ago. There are probably back because of the IFA in Berlin.

Default HDR TV format war?

Didn't Think There Was An HDR TV Format War? There Is Now – John Archer
https://www.forbes.com/sites/johnarc.../#6ded7c6e14da

"Yes, despite decades of evidence proving that consumers hate being forced to choose between two incompatible rival technologies, Samsung, Panasonic and 20th Century Fox used the recent IFA technology show in Berlin to kick start a new battle royale based around high dynamic range (HDR) technology [HDR10+].

Four key reasons why a new format war really is now underway:
1. Following the IFA announcements, pretty much every hardware and film studio has now professed support for one dynamic metadata HDR format or the other, tacitly recognizing - and, crucially, demonstrating - the dynamic technology’s ability to deliver a better picture performance than standard HDR10. [Dolby Vision vs HDR10+].

2. At the time of writing it appears that content creators will only back either Dolby Vision or HDR10+, not both.

3. When it comes to 4K Blu-ray, even if a studio wanted to take a neutral stance with regard to dynamic metadata HDR and offer both Dolby Vision and HDR10+, it will likely struggle to actually fit both formats onto a single disc.

4. If the films studios aren’t likely to make the same movies available in both HDR10+ and Dolby Vision, then maybe the hardware makers can provide universal playback on their TVs and 4K Blu-ray players?
Sadly, though, I don’t see this happening. It’s possible one or two TV brands might take a universal HDR playback approach, but it seems extremely unlikely that every brand will be so open minded."

IMHO, take a universal HDR TV playback approach is not open minded, it should be the business logic of every playback device maker: a playback device should be able to play any existing content the consumers want.

(i.e. not only Dolby Vision / HDR10+ content, but also (HDR10) / HEVC HLG HDR / YouTube HDR / Technicolor HDR content (if this latter can become operational) for a universal HDR TV)

Different HDR formats are just different software running on modern HDR compuTV (computer + TV)!
http://www.avsforum.com/forum/465-hi...l#post50302361

There is a precedent: Dolby Atmos vs DTS:X.
A format war?
No! Universal Audio/Video Receivers support both.
No need to choose a side: Dolby Atmos and DTS:X can co-exist.

"Given that many receivers support both DTS:X and Dolby Atmos, it's not likely we'll get a "format war" scenario where we have to choose one format or the other. While some enthusiasts seek out discs based on which audio format it supports, most of us will just buy the movie we want to watch and listen to the default format."
https://www.cnet.com/news/dts-x-the-...ive-explained/

Furthermore, software development is much easier and faster on modern operating systems of HDR TV than on rigid and complex DSP platforms of audio/video receiver.

High-end TV makers could and should commit to support all operational and being standardized (i.e. via committed upgrade) HDR formats: a win-win for consumers and HDR TV makers.
