2160p without HDR :: (UHD)
what's significantly important to me (2160p - 10-bit/12-bit - WCG - color space - etc) HDR actually bores me, although to the extent that it comes to bear on the 'other' elements of picture quality, i appreciate it note :: i have lost interest in SD/HD, but still watch it :: UHD is essential Last edited by jibucha; 02-28-2018 at 07:10 PM. |

![]() The resulting model can be used as a step towards perceptually correcting image brightness perception based on target display parameters. This can be leveraged for energy management and the preservation of artistic intent. |

But for modern digitally shot stuff I'd take the 2K HDR (preferably upscaled at source so as to bake in the superior chroma resolution of 4K) over the 4K SDR every time. |

Sony are targeting the gaming segment. It'd be cool if those TVs could also display the 1080p HDR output that you can get from certain UHD players if you set them to 1080p (examples for the Sony X800 and OPPO 203 here: https://www.avforums.com/threads/new...#post-25961961) but apparently they lack the necessary copy protection that's needed to get the UHD player to output an HDR signal.

On the general topic of 1080p HDR -
For the historical record with regards to timing and standards, it wasn’t until summer of 2016 that BT.2100 (which is an extension of BT.2020) that ITU-R added 1920 x 1080 HD as a resolution option for producing HDR TV images, as Richard Paul and I discussed back in ’16. This opened the door for broadcasters to choose to use HDR on HD channels. The thinking behind this addition (which was omitted from BT.2020) then was that daytime programming will not be confined to SDR, also it would offer a value proposition for consumer TV manufacturers, if they so chose, to produce HDR HD televisions in the smaller sizes where spatial rez > than 1080 isn’t as much of a benefit as compared to HDR. |
