I can only afford this one at the moment. When the time comes, I'll upgrade.
Fair enough assuming your TV has proper HDR. If it does not then I HIGHLY suggest waiting for the Sony.

Am mostly a Sony, Pioneer and Panasonic guy. Haven't owned very many Sammy products but must say the K8500 has done well for me particularly as a first gen player, it has been very competent. It can get loud at disc bootup and the remote is a bit too small for me (my hands aren't even ginormous) but otherwise have enjoyed watching all of my physical media on it. It loads fast and skips chapters particularly well.

When I inevitably upgrade to one of the DV capable players, I'll probably still hold on to the Sammy as a good backup.

I'm with Filmfreak if I was in the market for a player and was willing to spend $200 on Samsung I would be looking at the Sony instead.
I preach 60fps but never said that it will become the standard

I have the same TV as you. I know this is an entry level player, but so is my whole system. This is all for the bedroom, so I don't need the high end stuff for now. If I feel the need to upgrade in the future, I certainly will. I just need to get my foot in the door.

I think you started with this player, didn't you? Did you have any problems with the Samsung when you had it?

The BD reading unit on this player must not be very good. I recently ''got'' the Original Theatrical version of Star Wars as an ISO file. I burnt two BD's of it (Verbatim double layer dics, no LTH), did an ISO/disc check and both discs were bit accurate next to the ISO. They were burnt at the minimum allowed speed, which is X2, and when playing on the UBD K-8500 there were parts were movie froze or skipped. Both dics played fine on a very well worn Oppo BDP-93, not a single glitch.

Oh man if you have the same TV then I highly recommend waiting to get the Sony or another brand. The Samsung was nearly unwatchable on my TV. I had to boost contrast or lower gamma to make it watchable and the picture quality was hurt a lot by that. The way the Samsung deals with lower nits seems to be different.

The Sony has a much brighter image on my TV. I still had to tweak a few things, boosted color a little and lowered brightness a bit, but it is much more compatible with our television.

Some of this is subjective though so you never know. Some liked the "dynamic" mode on the Samsung and I thought it was hideous, so it might depend on the person.

I think you're right about the nits. The non-HDR Vizio in the living room looks much better without it in dynamic mode. I have it on Movie mode. After more tweaks, it's what I see as a very deep and natural look. I took to heart your recommendations from a discussion a while back.

In our bedroom we have a Samsung 4k with HDR and I bought the same player for it. There was little adjustment needed on the player. It's a bit better than the living room display.

Well, I'll give this player a chance and if it doesn't work out, I'll send it back. I think I read our TV is only good for 300-500 nits. I wouldn't know a nit, from a gnat. I know our TV's are entry level, so I'm not expecting the best picture possible with this set up. What I mean is, I'm not expecting it look as good as someone that has a top of line TV, and the best available player connected to it. It will be here tomorrow, so in about 26 hours or so, I'll find out. If I'm not satisfied, then I'll look into getting the Sony player.

I do appreciate your comments, as they are very helpful. Between you, Geoff, and maybe a couple of others, you guys seem to be the most informed dudes on here with all of this technical shit..

Do you have the same TV as Velvet and I? If so, I might bothering you for some settings if I need them. Is that ok?

Lmao, I thought I misunderstood you. So you do have a Samsung in the bedroom, connected to this Samsung player. Is this correct?

'Kay. Just so you know though, it's not about picture quality or whatever. It's literally about getting a decent image, one that is worth upgrading for. I wish you luck. Let us know how it turns out!

I had an SDR Sony TV (X810C ~250 nits peak | 75-80% p3 color space) connected to the K8500 last February and can still remember not being happy with the results particularly with Kingsman UHD exhibiting overexposed whites. Exchanged the TV to an HDR-lite Sony (X850C ~425 | 90-95%) and the results were immediately better. The Sammy was the only player available at the time if there been other options I probably would have exchanged the player first before the TV. But it is what it is am still happy with what I have now but long story short, do keep your receipt or have your online order number ready for any exchanges/returns you may need to make.

I am very pleased with the player's built-in apps. When I use my Oled TV I rely on the TV apps, but when I use my Sony projector I now exclusively use the player for things like Netflix and YouTube...Very fast, no hiccups, no buffering
