I know our TV's are entry level, so I'm not expecting the best picture possible with this set up. What I mean is, I'm not expecting it look as good as someone that has a top of line TV, and the best available player connected to it. It will be here tomorrow, so in about 26 hours or so, I'll find out. If I'm not satisfied, then I'll look into getting the Sony player.

I do appreciate your comments, as they are very helpful. Between you, Geoff, and maybe a couple of others, you guys seem to be the most informed dudes on here with all of this technical shit..
On a TV that supports BT2020 and does proper HDR, you won't notice any difference in picture quality if you've got each player set up correctly. I've tried both players. On your TV, maybe you'll notice a difference, if the Sony player does a better job "down converting" from BT2020 to BT709 so that it matches the color space supported by your TV. Having said that, Velvet has the same TV as you and from his posts in this and the Sony threads, even though he won't admit it and pretends he likes the Sony much better, he is having the exact same issues he did with the Samsung player. He had to adjust several settings to make it look the way he wanted - settings that he swore he would never touch on the Samsung player, because it would affect the accuracy of the picture.

So at the end of the day, your display is what matters most. The players won't make much of a difference in terms of picture quality.

Don't put words in my mouth to support your agendas. The Samsung player had issues on my TV with screen brightness, dullness and color. The Sony only had the issue with color, and I figured that out last night (deep color needs to be on auto for the player to send the 10bit signal, which my TV does accept). Now the Sony looks about perfect, and the only setting I changed from "movie mode" default is lowering brightness just a tad. HDR effects look great. With the Samsung I had to try boosting contrast or lowering gamma to make the image bright enough to enjoy. The Sony has no such issues.

I know many want to flog lesser TVs for a multitude of reasons, but honesty about our experiences is the best guide for navigating these murky UHD waters. The Sony, on my television, handles lower HDR brightness much better. It's just the truth. HDR looks great on my piddly Christmas gift TV, it's just the truth. The truth shall set you free.

That's some good information that you posted, I think. I have read some of your posts, and you seem like you know what your talking about. When I get home tonight, I'm going to set the player up, watch a movie, and see what happens. I know I'm going to have to make some adjustments, so it's probably going to take a few days to get the player and the TV properly calibrated. I do know that my TV is very limited to what it can do, so I'm not expecting miracles.

I know how good Blu-rays looked upscaled to 2160, and they look pretty damn good. Like you said, at the end of the day, it only matters on how good the picture looks to your own eyes. Thanks for the info.

Not putting words in your mouth. Before you literally said you were against changing any settings because it would alter the source and it would affect the accuracy.

I think most of this is just you trying to justify your purchase. Which is kind of understandable.

I was against changing contrast and gamma because they had an obvious impact on picture accuracy, yes. The color alterations weren't the same, since I could match them to the SDR output and get them roughly accurate. Also it's irrelevant now since I found the problem and fixed it. I am literally no longer changing any settings on the player.

Why don't you just trust someone who actually experienced these device combinations and is not an idiot? The Sony is much better in a ton of ways for my television, it just is. Why do you feel the need to be rude and arrogant about such things in the first place?

Humans...

The Samsung was still much darker than the Sony on default settings for me, but this fixed the Sony's color issue and might fix issues on the Samsung with our TV too. Who knows?

I watched Jason Bourne last night as my first movie in this new format. Not exactly reference material here, but it did look a tad better than the Blu-ray. So far, no problems with the player. I need to watch a more colorful movie to see how much of a difference it really makes between 4K, and regular Blu-ray. I only have 16 4K UHD movies to choose from, so I am limited as to what I can watch at the moment.

A big thanks to everyone that has helped me out as I continue my quest for the best possible viewing experience.

In spite of some of my grievances with the Peregrine UHD that one is nonetheless an obvious upgrade over the regular Blu-ray, try giving that a spin next time you get a chance. Shallows and Pacific Rim are stellar upgrades as well.

The outdoor scenes shot around the mansion are mind-blowing. To me, Miss Peregrine UHD is one step above Pacific Rim and Lucy even

I'm sure there's a lot to choose from, but vibrant color-wise, Gatsby is pretty great.

Relatively speaking, sure. Miss Peregrine is just perfection in color vibrance (outdoor scenes particularly)

Shallows really blew me away. I would rank it as good as Revenant in regards to PQ.

Just to point out, you can turn Deep Color on for this player, but the player correctly displays 10 bit at 4:4:4 with Deep Color Off (and for 60p content, it downconverts to 4:2:0 and displays the video at 10 bit.)

Deep Color should be off in the player and on in your TV

It depends. On the Sony Deep Color needs to be on auto for higher than 8bit color. I am sure HeatEquation knows what he is talking about with the Samsung though. But make sure you have it on 4:4:4!

For the K8500 ONLY

Deep Color on
UHD: 12 bit 4:4:4
BD: 12 bit 4:4:4

Deep color off:
UHD: 10 bit 4:4:4
BD: 8 bit 4:4:4

You can't set 4:2:2 on the Samsung K8500 and RGB is broken.. it's always Full (PC levels) regardless of the Limited or Full setting, so be careful with that setting.

This is true, and if you're watching anything in 60p with Deep Color off, the player will properly downconvert to 4:2:0 and display the image in 10 bit pixel depth.

Trying to find an answer to this. Does 12 bit do anything on a 10 bit panel? This is all I found "...sending a 12-bit signal helps to allow processing (like white balance adjustments) to be enabled without adding banding...". True?
