I've had to switch between the Samsung and the PS3 to make sure the colors weren't messing up a few times. |

I've had my machine now since the first shipment of preorders from Best Buy and I've never been able to get a decent picture on it, no matter which 4K Blu-ray I put in it. The picture is hazy, cloudy, and washed out and nothing I did would correct it, and I tried every setting combination possible. I was extremely disappointed. I would put the setting for the HDMI input on the TV to Custom but as soon as I put in a 4K Blu-ray, the setting would immediately switch to HDR Video and the pq was just awful. Then I discovered that when I played a regular Blu-ray in it the picture was beautiful. This was really frustrating to say the least. So yesterday I got a new HDMI 2.0a cable with support for 4:4:4 and 18 Mbmps, switched it with the current cable and immediately got a message on the TV screen saying something like "the machine is attached to a device that is not compatible with HDR" so I clicked on OK and instantly the setting on the TV went back to Custom(it would never allow me to do that before) and the pq from the Samsung was absolutely spectacular! I have the Sony XBR55X850C TV and supposedly it received a firmware update for HDR last September but I guess they lied because it definitely does not support HDR. Has anyone else discovered this?

So why did I get that message and why is the picture so horrible on the HDR setting and so spectacular on Custom? How do you stop it from going into HDR mode? Last edited by movielover1069; 03-13-2016 at 07:26 PM. Reason: Extra letters |

For me it's because I customised it, go to the HDR mode and change some settings |

It is however so subtle that if your eyes are used to BDs more so then UHD movies, it's probably an easy miss to spot the differences. That said, I'm not particularly a fan of this. I watched "Lucy" BD on the Samsung last night & that basically convinced me this 8500K will be better used for BDs than UHDs in long term. It's too late for this format especially when Smurfs 2 is your go to for best PQ yet Netflix "outshines" it. Ouch. Well time to finish watching that movie. If you didn't have Netflix to see it in 4K before you'll probably be satisfied with the UHD. Here is where San Andreas fits in so far in PQ compared to the others I've watched so far. 1) Exodus: Gods & Kings 2) The Peanuts Movie 3) The Martian 4) Ender's Game 5) Sicario 6) Fantasic 4 7) Hitman: Agent 47 8) The Kingsman 9) Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials 10) Chappie 11) Mad Max: Fury Road 12) The Amazing Spider-Man 13) The Last Witch Hunter 14) The Maze Runner 15) X-Men: Days of Futures Past 16) San Andreas 17) Salt 18) Hancock 19) Pineapple Express |

Hey dvdmike, I really need your help with this!! I've tried and tried to tweak the picture when it's in HDR mode and absolutely nothing I do helps to improve the picture. If my TV is indeed 100% HDR compatible as you said, why is the picture so bad? I've tried tweaking it both on the Samsung 4K player and on the Sony TV and it still looks like shit, but like I said, when this new cable forced it to go back to the Custom setting on the TV, the picture "popped" and was beautiful. What do I need to do to get the HDR setting to look like it should? I'm not as tech savvy as most of you guys so any help you can give me will be greatly appreciated. Thanks man!

And I am not a fan of HDR but did you use settings you picked yourself in the custom mode? |

Same here. That was the mode I used before I got this machine and I had customized it to get the best picture for that input. I've already tried everything to tweak the settings on the HDR mode and nothing gets rid of that horrible picture. I'm extremely frustrated.

I've tried it both ways but nothing improves the picture except for when it goes back to Custom mode. The HDR mode just will not give me a good picture, no matter how much I try to tweak the settings.
