I almost never see slipless copies of WB 4K's unlike Sony and Universal.

I think there something wrong with the way this is mastered. This was my 1st 4k bluray so at first I thought it was my tv, but subsequent 4k discs all look great.

The color is drained and there's something wonky with the gamma or something..and the motion looks like there's a bit of soap opera effect going on in some scenes even though i have all that crap turned off. I don't know but it just looks weird.

I have seen unforgiven numerous times, in the theater when it came out and on pretty much every home video format since so I know what it looks like. I've spent a couple hours on this fiddling with the player settings and trying to get my tv dialed to get this disc to look right but nothing I do seems to help.

Very disappointed in this one

Not sure what you mean about motion, never saw an issue there myself, but it does have less color than the BD in places. Some of us thought it looked more accurate, less overblown, but opinions differ. Try the remastered BD, you might prefer it.

I demod this for a buddy last weekend and he was floored. The DVD and BD has its issues. The 4K looked like it did in theatres.

Just watched it. Man... It looks great in 4K. I had to keep reminding myself that it is a near 30 year old movie. Crazy.

It’s one of those titles where someone hasn’t seen it and picks up the 4K might be disappointed but those who have seen it theatrically or on home video will definitely be in love.

30 years ago they used film, so it shouldn't be any sort of surprise that it looks great. These "it's old, I can't believe it looks good" comments should've phased out when blu-ray started.

Am I the only one that thinks Unforgiven was incredibly overrated for a Best Picture Oscar winner?

Yes, you are.

It's deserving of every award it's won. It's one of the best, if not the best western ever made.

Given how many oscar winners were extremely average in years that produced a glut of good films I don't really think using Oscar winners as an indicator of whether a film is overrated or not works. We'd end up saying pretty much all of them were overrated.

I mean, I don't really agree with that. I think the last four winners: Moonlight, Spotlight, Birdman, and 12 Years a Slave were all top notch films deserving of a Best Picture award.

On the other hand, I was incredibly disappointed when I saw Unforgiven for the first time. It was good, ya. Not great. and I understand that our opinions of movies are entirely subjective. But from a critical standpoint I thought Unforgiven was incredibly lacking, especially considering the amazing Best Picture winners that surround it. Dances with Wolves, Silence of the Lambs, Schindler's List, Braveheart, etc are all incredible films. Unforgiven just...wasn't that good from a film-making standpoint. Nor was the storytelling.

Not to detail the thread with Oscar/overrated talk but Birdman is the worst Best Picture winner in a long, long time. All the other recent winners have been fine though; in fact I'd say Spotlight was one of the increasingly rare times I thought Best Picture actually went to the best film of the year.

Well I really liked it but that might be becausee I hadn't seen a western for a long time and this was a good Western.

As for oscar winners.... At the risk of going off-topic I think "Moonlight" is highly over-rated. But when I made my comment I was thinking more in terms of "Chicago" winning where "Moulin Rouge" didn't. Or "Crash" winning over "Brokeback Mountain". Lots of other examples out there of films that were "robbed" at the oscars. By the way I thought "Birdman" was truly awful. That would have been in my "Worst films of the year" and asking around that opinion is pretty unaminous.

If Unforgiven is not the best western ever made, it should be in the conversation for the top spot. Before I bought the UHD HDR Atmos version last June, I had not seen the film in many years. Revisiting it was a revelation. I was blown away. Have watched it another couple of times since. It is that good.

I guess what you didn't like was actually Clint Eastwood's directorial style, known for leanness and a tendency to lack a sense of pace, which is not to say that he makes slow films (rather the contrary) but that they feel slow to people used to films with narrative momentum. Also another thing that Unforgiven didn't have is a set on stone 'plot', as the film doesn't focus on a key story, rather on the characters, setting and mood. This again is not a bad thing as most of the greatest films lack a plot in the traditional sense as well, think Taxi Driver or Moonlight or No Country for Old Men.

Atmos? Unforgiven 4k blu ray only had DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1, no Dolby Atmos, I've got the 4k blu ray. Agree with you about it being a great western film, definitely in the top five westerns of all time, probably my second favourite western after The Searchers.
