Someone said that turning off the ABL transformed the final shoot-out on their OLED, so there's that.

I remeber watching the DVD on my old Samsung flatscreen CRT and couldn’t see anything. Plan on watching this soon to see if I run into this issue.

With dimming on, it's very difficult to see the American flag and the people at the end of movie, or even that one of the deputies is wearing a striped shirt. If you watch with subtitles, you can easily tell when the dimming kicks in as the intensity of the white letters will drop noticeably. Hitting the settings button on the remote generally disables the dimming on an LG OLED immediately at the expense of the settings sidebar interrupting the movie.

I watched this the other night on my ISF calibrated JVC projector. Beginning and end were VERY dark. This seems to be the filmmakers intent. The daytime scenes looked pretty nice but were soft in spots.

I'm not familiar enough with the film to know how much this improves on previous formats. However the darkness did take away from the overall experience for me. I spent 20 mins of the movie scanning this thread and other reviews to see what was said about the PQ. Still, a great movie.

Interesting as I didn't find it anywhere near as dark on my JVC or where anything seemed unusual. Just curious, what are you using for tone mapping?

I'm using custom curves that were setup in my calibration. I did a little research and it appears the Oppo can produce some different results when handling the tone mapping.

Must admit I am not an expert in these areas. Am trusting the advice and expertise of my calibrator (Chad B from AVS forum). I got three custom HDR curves as part of my calibration ranging from lighter to darker. Most of my viewing is done with the curve that produces the brightest results. I am very pleased with the results of my calibration. However, Unforgiven is one instance where the image felt overly dark in spots.

Small world as Chad calibrated my JVC as well. He's absolutely top notch and very meticulous, but that's the thing with tone mapping and depending on the projection set-up (room, screen, size, ftL, etc) we know some things can vary. I've run into it as well although this one on my set-up looks really nice and I find better than the remastered BD in every possible PQ aspect. But it's interesting as some flat panel owners have complained this title looks too dark as well.

The Oppo tone mapping can look very nice on some scenes, but given its current issues, it can look worse on the very next scene. It's also not reproducing full wide color gamut, clipping black, and causing some color and artifact issues. Hoping the upcoming Panasonic 820 takes tone mapping up another level.

To give the sort-of-cheapo LCD view on things, on my KS8000 the ending scenes definitely looked dark as hell but not TOO dark in my opinion. I put the BD in after to compare and it looked roughly just as dark, and I remember feeling satisfied that was just how the movie was supposed to look. The 8000 reaches 1400 nits though, so it might depend on your LCD.

The one negative I DID notice with Unforgiven's UHD, which I still have not on any other I believe, is that it would often switch from a bright fire-lit scene to a totally dark scene and my TV was a little slow to drop overall brightness level, so you saw an overall dimming occur a second or so after the cut.

I see that sort of thing now and then on my ZD9, little 'pools' of light around bright spots in a darker scene. They don't look 'off' by themselves but those coronas of light take just a hair too long to decay when it cuts to another dark shot. Definitely a lot of that in Unforgiven's darker scenes on my telly.

Same here on my Sony UHD TV, I watched this last night on Vudu UHD and I could see everything in the Dark Scenes. Unforgiven is a Fantastic Movie, and I had it in my Collection on DVD, Blu-ray, and now UHD Digital. I watched it all the way through, and love it each time I upgrade.

I doubt it's coming any time soon either. I finally just decided to grab the UHD/BD Combo off Amazon for $19 the other day. That price was finally reasonable at least. Surprisingly, it did show up with the Slipcover included... I would have thought those were long gone.

This is the only time I've seen this phenomena (granted, so far I only have three 4k discs). Very odd.
Just a footnote. Seems that setting Dynamic Contrast to low for HDR10 triggers LG's 'Active HDR' and this improved Unforgiven's dark scenes immensely; i.e. I can actually see them.

Mt first copy I had to exchange on Amazon because it wouldn't load properly and now this one had a 'hiccup' in the middle for about 4 seconds that looked like a VHS issue. Anyone else have any problems like this?

Tired of waiting for a standalone of the newest standard BD, I decided to look at the prices at various online retailers, and was nicely surprised to see Amazon at only $19.99, while everyone else is $30 and up ! Ordered !
