Don't thank me, citizen. Thank the people who found a way to disable the ASBL in the first place, I'm just the messenger.

I think it's overrated as well. When I think of greatest westerns of all time it does not enter my thoughts. That would go to The Searchers, Unforgiven, Tombstone, Open Range, and The Outlaw Josey Wales, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, etc. IMHO.

All great picks. I personally hold Unforgiven high. I just love the pacing and the ending is outstanding IMO

It's not my favorite but for a late-period deconstruction, as well as being very well produced and acted, it's certainly up there and worthy of revisiting. I definitely plan on upgrading to this disc soon.

I like Tombstone, but Unforgiven has aged better for me.

Agree. I like the tone more. It’s dark but has moments of comedy. The cast is superb.

Love Tombstone as well. Also a fantastic cast.

Unforgiven is ok. I prefer Open Range, the original Magnificent Seven, True Grit (Wayne), Tombstone, Wyatt Earp, and about a hundred others. I just honestly hate Clint Eastwood movies

The original True Grit is terrible apart from Wayne. Glen Campbell can't act a lick and Kim Darby is just annoying as hell. Give me the Coen brothers remake anyday.

Heresy! The original is a classic and I love it to pieces. Darby gives one of my favorite performances of all time, and Maddie Ross is one of the great characters in my book (Steinfeld is also excellent in the role). It’s miles beyond the rote and redundant remake, IMO.

The original True Grit is dire IMO. The remake is a ten times better film, a whole different league of talent.

I love Unforgiven, A Perfect World, and much of his pre-2000s work. I can't stand his recent films for both their technical sloppiness and perspectives.

Strangely, I think I prefer and dislike elements of both versions on a scene by scene basis. Case in point: Wayne’s “fill your hands” delivery and the moment itself is superior in the original, whereas Tom Chaney’s comeuppance is handled much better in the remake. Etc., etc.

I think the original True Grit’s misfortune is that it won John Wayne his only Oscar. He gave far more deserving performances in far better films over the years, but when you view it through the lens of it being THE film that finally allowed him to win, it puts more weight on it than it can handle. As it is, it’s just a decent little revenge tale that isn’t really distinctive in across the western genre’s landscape. And of course, that’s taking for granted that one holds any affection for Wayne as a performer or the golden age filmmaking traditions he tried to carry with him his entire career, not to mention the other performances (which are give and take). If I had to choose one, it’d probably be the remake, even as a huge fan of the Duke, but I often find it unfair to compare newer films to classics as there’s an unavoidable difference in aesthetic that generally comes down to the style that one grew up with.

Couldn't disagree more. Jeff "Marbles In my Mouth" Bridges ruins the remake for me.
