Another worthless upgrade.

Agreed. The difference is negligible at best. The only reasons anyone should purchase the titles other than Ghostbusters, Glory, and Spider-man is if they have a display/player that can support the expanded color or if they own a 4K display, but then again they'll still need a player that upconverts to 4K.

Or if you don't own the original discs and don't care about extras.
If I didn't already own Taxi Driver, I would be on this, as the compression looks perceptibly better to me.

Hm, they made the 4K transfer slightly narrower.

In motion? Chances are you'd never notice the difference.

Compression stuff is usually more apparent in motion, from my experience, as the eye can better distinguish compression noise and image detail. There are a number of spots in the original disc where I feel the compression isn't quite up to the task of rendering the grain cleanly.

Of course, if your viewing environment doesn't allow you to see those low-level details, then I'm sure it'll be a wash.

Again I would add Angels & Demons to that list. To my eyes, after previewing several scenes, going back/forth, most, if not all, the night/dark scenes were noticeably improved.
But I would draw the line at those 4 releases. If you're a bonus content enthusiast, and can afford it, I would recommend all 4 of them as upgrades. I kept my old releases for the extras, and combined each one in a dual-disc amaray, kept the original sleeve and used the 4k slipcover. That way I still have all the package info at a glance, AND being Sony there is interior art on almost all their releases(small, but a nice perk IMO).

Bad compression is the enemy of motion....

Taxi Driver is a pointless upgrade, Glory Ghostbusters and Spider-man are not

Seems some may be up for pre-order for July 16, tho Amazon is not specifying anything at the moment:

Godzilla Blu-ray

Men in Black Blu-ray

Moneyball Blu-ray

Pineapple Express Blu-ray

Spider-Man 2 Blu-ray

btw, people's reactions are fantastic. They make slightly improved quality versions and instead of being happy people react strangely. Reminds me of the reaction when VHSers faced with LDs, LDs faced DVDs, CDs faced SACDs and DVD-As, DVDs & HD-DVDs faced BDs. The more things change...

It's a double-edged sword though. You get better picture (sometimes only marginal) but you're also sacrificing the extras found on the previous release for it. That's not always an easy decision to make for people.

I'm positive, if the Mastered in 4K releases had all the extras of the previous releases, there wouldn't be as much complaining.

Yeah, it was wrong that Sony did that with Total Recall.

Watch Spider-Man 2 drop the 2.1 extended cut as well.

Seriously. some transfers like Taxi Driver got criticized for not being a big enough difference, but for the most part, the complaints have been entirely over the lack of special features.

If there's enough space left over after increasing the bitrate for the feature, they should include the commentary tracks on the feature disc and the other features on another disc. I don't know how much space commentary tracks generally take up, but they don't need to be lossless.

Maybe the extended cut edits were not done at the 4K level

(of course any video junkie worth its salt could edit-in those parts) but then the slipcover couldn't say mastered from 4K could it

The lack of extras when there's space may be a creme-de la creme only in the disc marketing decision.
(Seems not very popular)
