Last night, I watched my new Blu-ray of Mad Max: Fury Road on my new 4K television, and my mind was blown. I'm going to enjoy this setup.

Even if I don't go to Ultra HD Blu-rays any time soon, this television makes my Blu-rays look so good that I'm really happy.

The jury is still out on how my DVDs will look on this 4K television, but I'm planning to watch my recently-acquired DVD of Night Moves (1975) this weekend, and I'll let y'all know my thoughts.

4K with passive 3D is what made me finally jump into 3D. The movies look great -- tons of color -- and the 2D films look amazing.

I watched my 2D Blu-ray of Mad Max: Fury Road during last night's viewing. It really looked magnificent.

Even one scene that struck me as too "3D gimmicky" in the theater looked great on the Blu-ray on my television setup.

Yes, you will definitely get increased color resolution (if your TV can reproduce 4:4:4 chroma), you will probably have better compression, and I suspect there will be many small benefits to doing post-processing like scaling, sharpening, etc, on a downsampled image.

For those wondering what a standard definition DVD looks like on a 4K television, I took a photo of a DVD screen pause just now. Pay no mind to the reflections on the screen of my back door...I cannot see any reflections when I'm watching the screen, but they showed up in the iPhone photo for some reason.

[Show spoiler]

My verdict: A DVD looks like a DVD, except a little better. It's not "unwatchable", as many claim will happen when a DVD is played on a 4K television.

Fox's announcement should have included which object based mixing (Atmos or DTS-X) is being implemented on these discs wait and see, wait and see.

Since 4K TVs are exactly 4 times the resolution of 1080p TV everything should scale easily and nothing should look worse than on a 1080p TV.

Well, unless it's a trade secret under an NDA clause, Fox won't be using premium Dolby Vision HDR expanded coding for now (just standard SMPTE HDR as Samsung's SUHD sets are using that protocol and they're in partnership), so they're probably open to either audio format.

If Fox was using Dolby Vision, which is supposed to need 100 GB discs, they'd be trumpeting it at these conferences. I'd be surprised if Dolby Vision discs would have DTS:X audio, rather Dolby Atmos. It makes no difference to me, but from what I hear Atmos for the home is actually more capable (more individual simultaneous objects allowed) than consumer DTS:X.

that would be really weird and counterintuitive in "commercial branding"

Are you 3D capable now? I now you're not a fan of 3D but there are some classics that I know in my heart of hearts that you would enjoy in their native 3D like House Of Wax and Dial M For Murder.

I'm still buying Blu-Ray but will also get into 4K. Not going to replace my collection though except for certain titles.

That's what I've been saying for a while. If people recoil in horror from DVD on their current 1080p set-ups then 4K won't bring any improvements to that mindset, but if one can bear to watch DVD to begin with then they'll be pleasantly surprised by how competent a decent DVD can look on a 4K set.

I actually watch DVD's quite a bit on a 1080P setup. It's mostly TV shows like Danger Man, Mannix, Kojak and so forth. Some look better than others. Every now and then interlacing becomes a small issue but it usually doesn't distract too much from the presentation. And I have some rare flicks that I don't think are going to make the HD leap anytime soon but you never know. Sometimes it's surprising just how good they can look, even projected on a large screen. It all depends really on how the transfer was handled.

The 2084 HDR is the mandatory version for UHD BD whereas Dolby Vision is optional, you can be guaranteed if they were using the latter they'd be shouting it from the rooftops. I don't think we'll see Dolby Vision™ branded discs until we start seeing more displays with that tech, although it's not like there are loads at the moment with 2084 either, admittedly!

It's a pity DV wasn't the mandatory version though as I much prefer the dual-layer system because it's formed of an SDR base and HDR extension, so mugs like me with a pre-UHD 4K TV would get a properly graded SDR output instead of something which has an on-the-fly transform from P3 HDR to Rec.709 SDR.

I'll never be 3D capable, because I have lazy eye in my right eye. Haha.

I can actually notice small difference when I'm wearing the glasses in a theater, as long as they are the even-mix lenses and not the red/blue lenses, but I don't get the full effect. For this reason, I prefer not to have a 3D player.

The above-mentioned movies are excellent even in their 2D incarnations, thankfully!

No, I've bought a 3D full HD beamer in january and it's here to stay for long!
Once it's obsolete I'll consider 4k.
I'm actually happy with the quality I'm seeing now, so I might never upgrade.

Most of the releases are new movies that already look fine on regular Blu ray. I think I'll skip for now

Earlier today, when I had the afternoon off, I replaced my 32" LG 1080P television with this LG 49" 2160p 120 Hz UHD 4K TV.

This was halfway a spur of the moment thing and halfway something that has been on my mind since I bought my new home two months ago. I initially went to Best Buy this afternoon with the intent of shelling out $350-$400 on a good 49" to 60" 1080P television. I looked at the 1080P sets, then looked at the 4K sets just to see how astronomical the prices were. Some of the smaller ones were in my price range, but the 49" and 55" 4K televisions in that particular Best Buy had support setups that I did not care for, since my television sits on a chest in my living room.

I then went to Target, and found the above LG 49" on sale for $699, and, since I've loved my LG 1080P television, it was a quick decision. Unfortunately, that Target store was completely sold out of the set. They did a search for me, and all of the Targets in the area were sold out of the set as well except for one store on the other side of the county. I drove 13 miles to the other Target after reserving the televison, and bought it there. The Target clerk notified me that this television was eligible for a 10% discount, so that helped sweeten the deal. I bought it with the 4-year Target protection plan, took it home, and set it up.

I watched a few minutes of Casino Royale, which is still my "demo disc" of choice. I then watched a few minutes of my all-time favorite film, Out of the Past, to check how black-and-white films look on the set.

I'm loving the television so far. I only sit about six feet away from this 49" television, so the fact that it is small for a 4K set is of no concern. It actually fills up my living room just like I wanted it to.

One strangely spooky thing...
I hooked up my Blu-ray player and HDMI to this new television, and went into the menu to see if there was a similar "Calibration Wizard" that my old LG television had. As it turned out, my custom settings from my old LG were already present on the Expert 1 picture setting of this new LG. Not sure how that happened, but the settings are pretty much identical, from what I can remember.
I decided to beef up my home system even more, so I purchased a LG sound bar w/ subwoofer for my new television earlier today.

I just set it up a few minutes ago with the digital optical cable, and set my television to the external speakers only. Everything seems to have synched with my LG television quite well, so that I can use the television remote for the volume without touching the sound bar remote. I also set the sound effect option to "Cinema."

I haven't delved into any advanced details, but I'm giving this the road test with again with my Mad Max: Fury Road Blu-ray. The first thing that I noticed was that there's a good bit of muscle to the sound and that I can hear dialogue clearly even in the thick of the action scenes. My sound bar volume is only set to 20 (out of 100 max), and it fills up my living room really well.

Any advantages of using an HDMI cable over a digital audio cable? (I'm sort of clueless about this stuff.)

I'll say that going from a 32" 1080P television with internal speakers to a 49" 4K UHD television with a sound bar and subwoofer is really something else. The total cost was a little less than $1,000, and it'll take me two or three months to pay off that VISA bill, but it's quite worth it.

(This is not the right thread for this line of discussion, but I figured that I'd update.)

HDMI will give you true HD sound although the digital optical cable is not a bad second runner up. Just know that the sound won't be true HD. If you do decide (and can) use an HDMI cable, I suggest not getting one from a brick and mortar store. They will charge you an arm and a leg. You can get the same quality HDMI cables from Amazon or Monoprice for much, much cheaper. Are you running this through a tuner that that can decode HD or has an HDMI input? If not, then I'm guessing the way you already have it set up is probably you're best bet.
