Yeah...Samsung products aren't allowed in my house anymore. I had one of their early, upconverting DVD players. Remember about 10 years back when an upconverting DVD player cost about $400.00? That damn thing literally ATE discs. It had some flaw that caused the disc drive spindle to rise before the disc loading drawer was fully closed...pushing the spindle onto the bottom of the disc (not into the center hole) and jamming the drawer. Most expensive and worst DVD player I ever owned. I had two of their TV sets and even one of their cameras crap out. I'm done.

The player they are showing is not likely a player at all. It seems to be another mock-up box which is getting people VERY excited for some reason. I have seen no report (and I've been asking all day on forums) that this box has been shown to operate. I'm not aware that a real UHD BD disc has ever been demonstrated.

This is sort of a re-run of the fake Panasonic box that was shown last winter but people are more excited now because we are closer to promised date of UHD BD (which, as it turns out, will not really be 2015 afterall).

Yeah. I have one of those upconverting Samsung players. I didn't have any issues with the draw loading but it absolutely refuses to play 4:3 content properly. I guess I just chose the wrong marriage of HD TV and DVD player. It sucks because when it comes to DVD, the stuff I watch most now is old school TV series which is of course in the 4:3 format. I tried every combination and can't get it to work. So, I just use my Blu-ray player instead. I can't stand that fun house mirror zoomed in look.

I know there isn't a 4k standard but 4k 3D sets can still handle 1080p 3D content upscaled so that player should be 3D enabled. 2 steps forward, 1 step back.

Yes it does. It lists 3d support in the specs. Just no uhd 3d as it doesn't exist as a standard.

My mistake then. The article I read on another tech site made no mention of the 3D support so I assumed it didn't have it.

If it doesn't support DVD playback it's a huge mistake.

I could tell you a story about buying my current Samsung HDTV 2 years ago, but it would take about 10 posts to tell the whole story. Defective panels, multiple repair techs, the worst customer support of my entire life...it was truly a nightmare that went on for months before they admitted it was defective, right out of the box. After months, I finally managed to get it replaced with a new, properly functioning set (I lucked out and scored a better, newer model that was just hitting stores). For the most part I love my current set (other than the hideous viewing angles), but it was a nightmare to get to this point. I'm not sure I would ever want to take a chance on that happening again the next time I'm shopping for a set.

It's been a bleak few years in the TV industry. Companies like Samsung and LG over-invested into display tech and, finding themselves in a completely commodified market they can't make any money in, will look for any desperate gimmick to stand out. I'm not sure UHD isn't one of them.

I'll be waiting for a second-gen Sony or Panasonic, personally. Never liked Samsung electronics in the past. Assuming the format makes it to second-gen. If they (amazingly) don't play DVDs then it's not a huge deal since I need to keep a region-free player around anyway, though that would be super cheap and silly of them considering how popular DVD still is.

The real question is when to start getting combo-packs to future-proof myself.

Another one against Samsung here. I had an old DVD player which was buggy as hell, and I think the first standalone (not PS3) BD player I ever bought was a Samsung. The tray got caught and wouldn't eject after a couple of days so that went straight back and I haven't touched anything from Samsung since.

I think the players will have DVD support, it's just not worth listing (on what looks like a hastily printed spec sheet) at an electronics show because it's such a mundane feature. Glad that 3D BD is there for you stereo fans. 'Disc to USB' a.k.a. the Digital Bridge was also listed, looks like that'll be ready to go on the production models. Perhaps that's even the reason behind the delay, they got all the other tech stuff nailed down but all this transferring stuff might've taken longer to hammer out.

Also not a fan of Samsung blu-ray players. Can't turn noise reduction off on the new ones.

The only Samsung A/V product I have owned is my 51" F5300B plasma. No issues so far...just over a year old. Two more years on my SquareTrade warranty just in case.

Model slips me (I think mid range), but my friend's 2014 Samsung LED went dead about a month ago.

However, I know of a couple of people whose Samsung DLPs are still running and those are over 8 years old.

I have the exact same problem with my bluray player. I don't care for Samsung at all.

I have the Samsung 64" F8500 Plasma TV, which works great.

But I've had bad experiences with their DVD and Blu-Ray players in the past, and I too will avoid getting a Samsung 4K player.

So long as upcoming combo packs include both the 4K BD and standard BD, I'll likely start buying those.

I am curious to know if there would be any benefit to hooking up a 4K BD player to my plasma. It is a 1080p set, and obviously it wouldn't be able to take full advantage of the extra resolution the same way as a proper 4K TV, but I do wonder if there would still be a noticeable improvement in quality.

It will be quite a while before I get a 4K TV (I just got that F8500 last year, and it was pretty pricey.... my wife would kill me if I try to upgrade any time soon. ). If there is any advantage to using 4K discs on my existing TV, I could see getting a player (though I too will likely wait for a second gen player so they hopefully get any bugs worked out). But I do plan to get the discs in combo packs once they come out going forward for any applicable titles that I am interested in.

Same here. I am holding off until I get an Panasonic, LG, or Sony UHD player.

That alone would be a deal-breaker for me, even if I didn't already hate Samsung players. What are they thinking?

Samsung's rocky history with standard BD players should be enough for anyone to avoid their future players of any format. The only reason they're first to debut a UHD player is because they were the first CEM to heavily invest in 4K displays.

The two I'd consider buying from those are A Few Good Men and Groundhog Day.

Both are pretty decent Blu-rays, but could perhaps be better.

If a decently-priced 4K re-master comes out on Blu first, I'd probably get that.

The only other film I'd consider to be a favourite is Taxi Driver, but I have that on the 'from 4K' Blu-ray already, and I very much doubt the raw 4K will be appreciably better.

Actually, as I'm in no rush, I suspect I might actually wait if they're re-issued on Blu - see if a UHD appears and how it's received.

All-in-all the list doesn't surprise me,

Steve W

EDIT - Missed LoA. Add that one.
