I could be mistaken, but I believe both Bourne Ultimatum tracks are 48kHz/24-bit master audio, so unless there were separate masters created for Dolby and for DTS then they should be the same.

However Dawn of the Dead is 48kHz/16-bit for TrueHD on hd-dvd and 48khz/24-bit for DTS-HDMA on blu-ray, so there is a difference there, so I guess it can't be used.

Default An open letter to DTS-HDMA supporters...

For those that claim DTS-HDMA sounds better than its Dolby True HD counterpart when using the exact same source, I implore you consider a possibility: your brain is actually interpreting the signal as being better. If this is the case, and the two codecs theoretically produce an identical result, how is this possible?

There is a discipline in psychology called psychoacoustics. It deals with the relationship between the objective and scientific mechanics of sound, and the subjective nature of how our brain processes that information. Think of what causes a visual illusion. Now consider that this may be happening to the audio signals entering your brain (call it an auditory illusion).

Hearing is not a perfect science, there are errors introduced during all this human processing. Preconceived notions that one source sounds better than the other may cause your brain to actually perceive that signal to be superior. Call it the Legacy DTS effect.

Now, for those that are trying to compare different sources and have come to the conclusion that DTS-HDMA > Dolby True HD, I can only request that you explore the possibility that, for the most part, the current offerings available on DTS-HDMA are simply better soundtracks to begin with. This of course would explain why there are excellent examples of soundtracks using both codecs, but because you perceive more of the DTS-HDMA ones to be superior you attribute this to the codec rather than the source material.

Disclaimer: I voted to switch to DTS-HDMA, but only for the sake of those who cannot get lossless and must play the legacy tracks. Lossless is lossess.

Further I would say that doing a blind study of The Bourne Ultimatum would be educational as well, in addition to recording possible differences in the audio tracks. Figure out what it would take to sound level the TrueHD track with the DTS-HDMA one, and then have someone blindfold you. Have them play audio tracks of the same scenes from both versions but not telling you which one is which. You would then state which one you thought sounded "better" and see what the results were.

Bourne is a great comparison as I had the HD DVD and now have the BD. Both are lossless 24/48 and both sound great. This was my one chance to hear the same track over 2 different codecs and both through bitstreaming.

I know the HD DVD had the issue with the TRUEHD DRC being set to ON and with the default setting to AUTO on my Onkyo it always enabled DRC and i'd have to go in and disable it even listen. It also had 3 repeatable dropouts bitstreaming. Got to be a major pain in the butt, whereas the DTSMA on the BD just played no problem.

Comparing codecs (after disabling DRC) they both sound remarkably the same (which they should). I've always been of the opinion that DTSMA has a more PCM like smoothness which I found consistent with this film on BD. However I can't say I heard any more detail generally. If I did it was very minor. Believe me TRUEHD is no slouch.

It occurs to me that Sony has likely learned one of the key pieces of information it was after in this poll. Here's an excerpt from the post requesting the poll:

In the 500+ posts in this thread, I don't recall seeing one from an owner of an early player worried about losing lossless due to the lack of on-board dts-MA decoding. A few people have spoken up on their behalf. But, no actual owners have weighed in to complain.

lol!,so it comes down to ''i'm right and the whole world is wrong.''
thats the kind of crap you hear from someone 13 years old.
the more things change, the more they stay the same.

i guess they can't help themselves, some people think there really special, even if they say something dumb.

i'll take the science any day because i want to know how something works and if i have a mis conception about something i want it corrected.

i hope to sony goes dts to so to prove there wrong, its sound the same.
lets remember dts has always wanted us to think there special too....not!

Anybody care to comment why DTS MA is the default cordec when both Dolby True HD and DTS MA are offered?

Perhaps Sony wants people to double dip by putting out already released titles that have DTS-HDMA instead of TrueHD? How many people would double dip just to get lossless DTS instead of lossless Dolby? I know I wouldn't.

Looking forward and wishing it very badly that Terminator salvation,Angel and Demons will get DTSHD master audio like Wolverine and (Fast and furious) during their release on BD this year .Just i wish my dream come true one day
i hope your right

Um . . . the soundtracks are mastered before DTS/Dolby gets ahold of them.

And I thought the next war would be in regards to a storage medium... not something on the Blu-ray medium itself.

Here we go!!! LET THE WAR OFFICIALLY BEGIN!

DTS HD MA ftw!

See if someone like Sir Terrance can arrange for a double blind listening test for you with something like the 2L recording that has both dts-ma and TrueHD of the same track. I would wager $1,000 you wouldn't pick one over the other when level matched with anything resembling consistency.
Sir Terrrence voted for "Yes, Drop TrueHD for DTS-HD MA"

Weird, I thought posted this yesterday but the post is gone now.

He did, in a post. But, if you look at the poll results detail, he voted for "drop TrueHD for dts-MA".
