ok so i finally got around to comparing the true hd track on the aussie incredible hulk to the dts hdma of the us release. I can honestly say that other than a difference in volume of about 4db i could hear absoutly no difference between the two tracks. The true hd track is phenomonal just like the dts hd track. I used 2 ps3 to make the comparision and just switched back and forth between the inputs. I compared 2 scenes, the first fight sequence between the hulk and tim roth and the final battle between the hulk and tim roths hulk. They both sounded incredable and other than the volume i heard ZERO difference. Just as a note, i played the dts track at -4 on my receiver and i played the true hd track at 0. If anyone would like to compare the tracks themselves i will be more than happy to send them the aussie copy, you just have to agree to post a short review of your thoughts and agree to send it to someone else when you are done to do the same.

Funny! Ya know, William Thomson said "When you can measure what you are speaking about, and express it in numbers, you know something about it; but when you cannot measure it, when you cannot express it in numbers, your knowledge of it is of a meager and unsatisfactory kind: it may be the beginning of knowledge, but you have scarcely, in your thoughts, advanced to the stage of science."

As long as it's lossless and mixed well, I don't care if it's Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD MA.

Dear Sony

I voted others. And I have this to say.
Drop Dolby TrueHD and go for DTS-HD Master Audio for one simple reason: Money.

This huge thread is proof enough, that many people are 100% ready to believe that DTS-HD is somehow superior over Dolby TrueHD, despite all experts' efforts that have proven time and again that they're both the same damn thing. But who cares? It will always remain like this, DTS > Dolby Digital. So go for it and don't lose out in all that extra cash. Seriously, there are people who buy BD movies just because it's in DTS-HD Master Audio.

Hell, release it in 7.1! It will sell even more!
And if you can help it, uprez it to 96KHz/24-bit even if the original studio master is 5.1, 16-bit, 48Khz. You will be amazed by the sales figures by the end of the fiscal year.

They're both lossless, so I don't see a difference.
People do prefer DTS more, and are more willing to purchase if it contains DTS.
Just spend some money, you'll wind up gaining more sales than if they did.
If they don't want to pay for DTS, they could use LPCM instead, people just seem to hate Dolby. I don't care, but others do.

Great post!
I think much of this belief comes from the DVD/laserdisc years. When either of those format's releases had a DTS soundtrack, you were almost always assured of better quality with higher bitrate. I remember the laserdisc release of Evita as an example, sounding so much better on the special DTS release than its Dolby counterpart. So I think people assume that is now true with Blu-ray disc. Perhaps Dolby should have created a "Dolby Digital Plus" for use with DVD and laserdisc in those years to match the bitrate of DTS, it has obviously created quite a market for DTS product today.

Then why has it all but disappeared from DVD?

Reality is that they won't sell significantly more.

Maybe not, I was just pointing out the reason that there may be a preference when in actuality they (lossless) all sound the same. I stated no facts, just opinions.

I'ts pretty obvious why you don't see DTS on dvd anymore, the people who are interested in high end audio will be buying blu-ray now, why put DTS on DVD when most audio minded people have moved onto blu-ray? DTS just isn't nesessary on dvd anymore. Also why have warner released WATCHMEN blu-ray with DTS and LORD OF THE RINGS will have DTS when it's released, why have warner decided to use DTS on these movies?

Nope, that's not it at all.

Watchmen was a box office disappointment, they are also offering a cut not seen in the theater. The Paramont (UK) original cut version is TrueHD BTW.

LOTR is using Mi Casa, which did the 7.1 remix and uses DTS.

Why The Lord of the Rings is in DTS on BD could be down to the reason that New Line Cinema is handling the encoding of their films. And New Line has had a preference of DTS-HD MA 7.1 ever since day one even if some of their films didn't need any of those.

To be honest, I'm not sure of the answer myself. It could be anything.
I have no idea about Watchmen. Maybe it's something to do with the producers themselves handling the BD production than Warner Bros? Or somehow Paramount is involved?

The Shawshank Redemption is also curiously another WB product in DTS-HD.

My reason for wanting DTSHDMA has now gone because I've just got a receiver that will decode and output both Though for people that can only access the core track DTSHDMA is still better for them.

La Casa does the mix, are you trying to say they now determine the encode? I mean they could have just as easily encoded it to TRUEHD 7.1.

What has box office failure or success got to do with what type of sound the blu-ray will have?

So...what is the audio codec on the highest selling Blu-ray Disc of all time to date?

Not even just the top spot I'd guess. Probably a good proportion of the top 10. Dark Knight, Transformers and Iron Man are all TrueHD aren't they?
