That's what they did on the Red Cliff discs...

7.1 24-bit LPCM, DTS-HD MA and TrueHD.... along with reference PQ. A/V wise, there isn't anything to complain about there.

A lot of HK movies do this, in fact.

Which I'm still trying to comprehend putting all three of those audio tracks on the disc. Yet people on these forums swear up & down that PCM is such a great, big space hog that video & extras suffer because of it. No one has really been able to prove that statement because there haven't been many examples of video re-encodes of titles in PCM and then in TrueHD/DTS HD MA.

Now using three lossless/uncompressed audio tracks is completely useless and redundant because it's equivalent to putting 3 Mandarin TrueHD tracks or 3 Mandarin DTS HD MA tracks or 3 Mandarin PCM tracks on the same disc. While it provides a great test for comparing lossless compression flavors, it's far more a waste of space and bit allocation than a single 24-bit uncompressed track.

Blu-ray has plenty of bitrate and space to waste, however. Maybe they could've used it for some PiP track, but as pointless as it may seem to you, people have their preferences when it comes to audio. And they're catering to them all. Good for them, I say.

I think Red Cliff is 16-bit PCM. Not 24-bit.
So there's quite a bit of disc space saved.

Also, there are no commentaries, PiP features or anything else to help eat up the bandwidth and bring the bitrate for the picture down...

I don't think people care as much about space as they do bandwidth. So while you can fit a PCM track on there, it might cut into being able to do other features.

Why would anyone want multi-channel LPCM? It takes up too much space, has no flexibility and only works if you either have either HDMI on your AVR and TV or the full compliment of analog I/O on both you blu-ray player and your AVR.

If Blu-ray is to be a success, it has to work for at least the 5.1 crowd. Sure, if "Joe the Plumber" just jacks his Blu-ray player into his TV, it will work, but he's no more likely to buy Blu-ray than he is to actually pay for satellite! It's the hard working guy in the middle who has 3 kids now, and his home theater kit from before child #1 was born, (meaning no HDMI, limited, if any multi-channel analog audio), and actually buys titles (and yes, actually pays for DirecTV) that you need to win over.

I'm using a PS3 as a blu-ray player (for now). The PS3 does not support multi-channel analog outputs, and the only format that gives me surround sound out of the SPDIF is either legacy Dolby Digital, or DTS/DTS-HD MA. Everything else yields a stereo down mix. I'll tell you, THAT REALLY SUCKS! (Though I actually prefer the high quality stereo mix over the DD 448 used on DVD!)

This means nearly all Warner and Sony titles are very disappointing, (though the quality of most Warner titles can't be fixed with just an audio codec, man what happened over there?!)

If every studio just published in DTS-HD MA, then I could get the benefit of DTS 1.5 Mbps on my legacy system (yes, I have an Onkyo 886 on the way, but it doesn't mean my old B&K goes into the dumpster!), and still enjoy lossless on my new system.

(trips and twists ankle stepping off of soap box) OW

Well, if every studio published in TrueHD they'd get the benefits of 640kbps DD, have access to night mode, and even use it with their TV or PC Media Centers if needed.

This format was designed for this. Special features, and beloved commentaries would not be affected one bit.
NOW, those blasted digital copies-that's a complete waste on blu. Most who are using this format have HT systems that are connected; save those for DVD-another excuse to keep the prices up, another reason to bring BR prices down.

Well I've got hold of two Sony titles which aren't out yet (The Craft & Mary Shelley's Frankenstein), and both have DTS-HD MA in three languages, with all tracks being 24-bit depth.

Well done Sony

I knew using DTS-HD MA would increase the chance of us getting 24-bit tracks. Same goes for Warner - Watchmen is their only 24-bit release they've ever done, and it's DTS-HD MA.

Terminator : Salvation will also be released with DTS-HD Master Audio by Sony internationally.

Warner also releases Harry Potter And The Philosopher's Stone and Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets with DTS-HD Master Audio on blu-ray when they come out in December.
Let's hope Warner continues to use this codec in 24-bits in the future

I wonder if the Sony international release will be the Director's cut though? If not I will import the US Warner version.

The UK version by SONY will have both versions via seamless branching.
