I'd be interested in Monster Squad, because my Lionsgate copy shit the bed when I watched it last October, and the Olive release has zero extra features (I did buy that, because it was cheap, and I just wanted a watchable copy of the film).

I wouldn't mind new Scream editions of Monster Squad, Night of the Demons 2, and Witchboard 2 when Olive's right expire. Possibly even The Running Man as well.

Please forgive me if this was discussed in a previous section of the thread...

Is there any additional news about the April release of John Carpenter's Escape From L.A. Collector's Edition from Scream/Shout? I'm planning on picking it up to replace my old non-anamorphic Paramount DVD, and from what I read, they were supposed to be working on a new transfer for it...

Has there been any news on this front?

No - other than I imagine it'll be delayed.

Thanks, Spooked; yeah, after I posted I checked in the dedicated thread for the title (didn't see it initially because it was buried a couple of pages in) and it seems it's due out in May now.

Just in time for my birthday...

For months, I've been wondering when in the heck I'm going to find the time to go through the Candyman Blu-ray set, with its four commentary tracks, dual versions, and extras.

I revisited the theatrical movie last night for the first time since its release, and I've been running the extras in the background while I telework at home (because of the coronavirus).

My review is forthcoming, but the commentary track with Tony Todd and the screenwriter is quite fun. Nothing huge in detail about the actual movie, but I just love their casual banter.

More Universal Hammer Films I hope will be coming this year. Remastered and in proper screen ratio. Also waiting for Universal's The Black Castle (1952)

I can't find the source. I think it might have been the Hammer Horror on Blu-ray facebook group, as there's a post about the film and I can see a reply thanking Bruce for the 'great news', but not his actual post. Might be that it's restricted to friends, or that he's since deleted it.
This would be awesome, Shadow of the Cat is one of the few Hammer films I've never seen before. It's been essentially impossible to find since I started collecting physical media in the mid 2000s.

Yeah, it's been an elusive title for sure. I've had the Final Cut UK DVD (region 2) for many years. It appears to be OOP now. Sometimes a used one can be found on eBay. On Amazon.com there currently are two used copies; one for $24.98 and one for $237.99. Unbelievable! Of course there are bootlegs as well. It was never released on DVD in the US. So I'm looking forward to this blu-ray too.

Holy crap! I sure hope so. If true, hopefully they will use the original VHS art. I say VHS art because the poster art for parts 2, 4, and 5 is just a generic black background with the title, while the VHS art remedies that. The original VHS releases of parts 1, 3, 6, 7, 8, and 9 used the poster art.

The Black Castle (1952) is expected to be included in a sixth (and perhaps final) volume of the Universal Horror Collections.

According to the urban legend, the Candyman, the spirit of a wealthy descendent of slaves, will appear behind victims and kill them if they say his name five times while looking into a mirror. For Helen and Bernadette, two graduate students played by Virginia Madsen and Kasi Lemmons, this ghostly menace is simply material for a thesis on contemporary folklore. When our two adventurous heroines visit a crime-stricken Chicago housing project, Cabrini-Green, to investigate the backstory of a murder believed to have been committed by Candyman, Helen discovers that there is more to this villain than mere myth. As the hook-handed figure, played by Tony Todd, draws Helen into his fold, her life is besieged by violence and mayhem.

The 1992 supernatural slasher, Candyman, based on the short story, "The Forbidden", by Clive Barker, and directed by Bernard Rose (Immortal Beloved), was released just months after the Los Angeles riots that erupted after the trial for the beating of motorist Rodney King by policemen. The self-aware narrative, which forces viewers to examine the past and present race-related stereotypes of violent black men, an allegory made even more edgy at the time by the casting of a white woman who is lured into the titular villain's control, was greeted by controversy upon its release for its ability to shatter false myths while also catering those those long-held beliefs simply due to the nature of the monster. Having been a fan of Barker's fiction since my teenage years, I was initially disappointed by the deviations from his prose taken by this adaptation when I saw it at the theater during my college years, but my love and respect for the end result has grown over the decades.

Tony Todd, a strong-spoken actor who lends a Shakespearean stage authority to what could have been an exploitative role in lesser hands, is the force that drives this riveting engine. Nobody who has seen this film will forget his terrifying dialogue to the equally-capable Madsen's protagonist. “The pain, I can assure you, will be exquisite. As for our deaths, there is nothing to fear. Our names will be written on a thousand walls. Our crimes told and retold by our faithful believers. We shall die together in front of their very eyes and give them something to be haunted by. Come with me and be immortal.”

The encounters between Madsen's Helen and Todd's Candyman that ultimately enable the legends of the supernatural being to flourish in nightmarish infamy forever after serve as a grim reminder of how media frenzies in the wake of inner city crimes continue to perpetuate unfair assumptions about race and ethnicity. The thematic shift from Barker's original story, which explored British class divisions, to the dynamics of America's metropolitan neighborhoods remains a stroke of genius on the part of Rose's screenplay.

Those who simply want to enjoy a masterfully unnerving horror tale without feeling inundated by allegories, however, will not be disappointed. Candyman, with its imaginative gore effects, its looming title character, its bees...a lot of bees, and its supporting roles from the likes of Xander Berkeley, Ted Raimi, Vanessa Williams, and Michael Culkin, captures the irresistible head rush of the 1980s golden age of slasher cinema while supplementing it with a big budget aesthetic. The haunting music score by none other than composer Philip Glass is the final “hook” that sinks into the collective psyche of the audience.

The main draws of this Scream Factory Blu-ray are superb audio and video presentations of both the theatrical cut and the unrated cut (which differs from the theatrical in a barely negligible way). This package, however, does not shortchange us in the department of razor-laced sugary extras. In addition to four, yes, four, commentary tracks, all of which have their separate merits, we have several documentaries and excellent present-day interviews.

There was a French DVD also with burned in French subtitles. I had both but I always did a PAL>NTSC conversion with my PAL DVDs because I didn't have a player. Something about the French one was superior to the UK one, but I wanted the UK one also if I wasn't in mood for subtitles. I really can't remember but I think the French was letterbox and the UK fullscreen.
Svenghoulie on MeTV has shown it a few times. Only time I've ever seen it show up on tv. At the time they were showing only movies from a Universal syndication package and the Uni logo was at beginning of film. So this is definitely still with Universal in U.S.
