Just a page or two ago you had people saying they would buy The Garbage Pail Kids Movie if it was put out on Blu-Ray...

People have different tastes, and one can enjoy one flick that others find abysmal.

But you know, if that were the case, I'd probably like it a lot more. The creators seem to want to occupy some magical middle ground -- to have their cake and eat it too, as it were.

It's not a prequel to the movie Psycho, it's a prequel to the book (which isn't a period piece, their reasoning goes, so the era doesn't matter), but they've visually replicated the Psycho movie house/motel, and the casting of young Norman is certainly intended to call to mind Anthony Perkins (who doesn't resemble the character in the book).

And I'm not one to let my OCD geekery get in the way of a good episode of TV, so I don't want to create the false impression that the modern setting is what drove me away; it wasn't. Rather, it was the fact that the shenanigans Norman and his family (ruggedly handsome drifter half brother?! ) and the over-the-top craziness of the town itself actively undermined the reality of the movie. Not to mention the character of Norman himself.

I mean, does anybody believe that Norman, as he exists in the Psycho (1960) universe,
[Show spoiler]managed to bed the most popular and beautiful girl in the school after receiving a booty call (NORMAN GOT A BOOTY CALL) while also being pursued by a similarly beautiful supposed "ugly duckling" and brazenly flirting with his hottie English teacher?

This stuff is so far removed from what we know about Norman Bates that it doesn't just destroy the show's credibility, it also retroactively erodes the reality of the films. In Psycho, we're meant to think that the scandal involving the deaths of Norman's mother and her lover was a big event in the history of the town; if the first season of Bates Motel is anything to go on, it'd barely warrant a couple of column inches in their local paper.

This Twin Peaks style approach to the show is one of the things I really like about it. Vera Farmiga also does a great job as Norma.

DVD Beaver have their review of The Stuff up, and, as expected, it looks fantastic. I'll test out the pop-up menu trick as soon as I receive my copy.

We're agreed on that last point, and I love Twin Peaks, but I don't think the show quite carries it off; it seems more like a desperate attempt to pass the time in between scenes about Norma and Norman (which are interesting) and boilerplate scenes of high school drama (which are not).

Maybe I'm being too hard on it, but of all the shows I've discovered during the Golden Age of Television in which we're fortunate enough to live, it is by far the most disappointing.

I just want to use this opportunity to plug Deadly Premonition for PS3 and 360. If you like Twin Peaks, and have one of those systems, play it.

Anyways, I'm pretty psyched for Evilspeak and Final Exam. I've never seen either one, but nearly bought the Scorpion/Code Red releases on several occasions

It really does look great but what's with all the extra picture on both sides? It almost looks like 2.35:1 AR. Makes me wonder if there are any more Lakeshore/New World titles that will benefit from being upgraded this way (more picture information). This is a fun film.

I'd love that. Even if Bates Motel was just an SD extra on Psycho IV's blu-ray.

And maybe throw in the doc by Rob G from FearNet (in HD) "The Psycho Legacy".

Psycho 4 is so underrated, and for no good reason.
People hear "made-for-tv" and "third sequel to a masterpiece" and think it must be terrible. It's an excellent prequel, with an excellent cast, a great script, and it sticks perfectly with continuity to rest of the franchise, while delivering the goods that a prequel should.

I prefer 4 to any of the other Psycho films, except the original of course. But I understand why the others are popular, 4 however, gets so much shit for no reason at all. It's stylish and really spooky. Where's the problem?

It's not like it's got Vince Vaughn as Norman Bates... I'm not asking for a complete Psycho collection on blu-ray or anything, just the last good one.

Btw... Apparently Bill from Code Red has made it extremely clear that he wants absolutely nothing to do with Scream Factory again (sublicensing) because "people were rude when the deal was announced". Wtf?

I vaguely remember this. Starts as a Psycho homage, turns into an Afternoon Special about teen suicide, right?

*sigh* I appreciate all that Bill has done for fans of obscure vintage horror - I REALLY do. But... He could use some guidance in the fields of public and professional relations, as evidenced by his occasionally erratic business decisions. I hope I won't offend anyone by saying so.

Glad someone else likes Psycho IV! It is my favorite sequel after part II. For a made for tv movie, it is very well done. Plus, random John Landis!

I was at a gathering with Mick Garris last year and I totally spaced on the fact he directed Psycho IV. I would have talked to him about that all night if I had remembered!

Wait, doesn't Code Red have the rights to Madman? What is going to happen with this movie now?

What happened? What did he say that was erratic? How was Shout rude to him?

From what I understand, it wasn't so much that Shout!/Scream was rude to him but more likely that the public reacted badly to the announcement (which if I recall correctly happened).

But that's Mr. Code Red for you; the guy's the equivalent of a kindergartner who bogarts all the best toys and then whines when someone calls him out on it. Then he whines and cries when someone calls him a mean name. And gets even more stingey.
